  1. Hi there. I've an 11 year old who's keenly interested in all things spies. I'll take her soon to the Spy Museum in DC. I'm also looking for a decent non-fiction book about (in)famous spies & spy gear. Fiction books are welcome as well. I'm certain she'd also love a book on codes, ciphers, etc. Do you recommend any age-appropriate movies too? Lastly, what about those spy gear kits I see on Amazon? Any of them good & worth the money? Thanks in advance!
  2. It took a bit of digging but I think I found one. Based on the other books in this series, it’ll be a bit terse but it’s a starting point. Yippee!!
  3. Howdy. I’m looking for a book of famous/notable Native Americans. I’d like a compilation of people that gives a concise (but not overwhelming) summary. It’s for an 11 year old & I don’t want to buy individual books on each person. Any ideas?
  4. Thanks for the insight re: Twilight. I’m glad I asked & we’ll pass on it then. We just got done with a road trip back from the beach & I popped in the audio book Mysterious Benedict Society. We didn’t get through all of it but it was engaging! I have the hard copy as well so it may just be the beginning of something here (I didn’t realize it was a series). I’m also looking into the other recommendations today & over the weekend. Loads of good titles here! Thanks!
  5. Thanks, folks! I appreciate all the suggestions! Another question: Does anyone have a rec for the above but a la vampires? She’s kind of interested in vamps (but not too gory) & I vaguely recall a book or series that was quite popular years past (Twilight?). That &/or any other titles w/ this theme (along w/ the other interests listed above) are much appreciated.
  6. Hi. My daughter’s 11th birthday is fast approaching and I’d like to get her a new book series. She’s an avid reader and has re-read Harry Potter, the Penderwicks, and a Series of Unfortunate Events tons of times. She loves adventures and action but also has started to show an interest in ‘romance’ (but not too graphic). She loves witty, funny, and creative characters who also have adventures. Any ideas? Many thanks!
  7. Lori, I actually just purchased the first one you recommended through their site directly & saved myself some moola. Hopefully it'll hit the mark this fall!
  8. Hi there. I’m looking for a weights & measurements poster. What I see on Amazon is too lean on content yet too heavy on kiddie graphics. I’d like something for a visual 6th grader that’s comprehensive but that also does include some graphics. I also don’t want to pay too much (I’ve seen 1 poster for $30!). Thanks in advance for suggestions!
  9. I'm also wondering about decent documentaries or movies--prehistory, sumerians, mesopotamia, egyptians, etc.
  10. Any suggestions on quick read alouds? I'm thinking Gilgamesh but wonder if there's anything else out there.
  11. Hi there. I've a rising 6th grader who will be studying ancient history. I'd like some easy yet hands-on supplemental activities I can use with her. Any ideas?
  12. Thanks for these ideas! Adolescence is certainly a hot topic around here right now!
  13. Sounds like a weird discussion thread title, I know. However, my 10.5 yr old daughter is beginning (just beginning) the stage of puberty. She has sooo many questions. We go through them of course. I have educational books on such a topic too. We recently read ‘Are You There, God’ & she loved it. Is there any other appropriate book I can hand her over. Along that same vein, what about a movie? I’m not looking for too graphic or divulging material, since she’s still only 10. I just want to satisfy her insatiable curiosity. Thanks!
  14. Howdy. I’m asking this again but slightly differently. What Netflix shows does your tween like? My kiddo has finished ‘Series of Unfortunate Events’ & likes ‘Stranger Things’. She’s looking for a new series but IDK what’s out there. I’m looking for something witty with a strong storyline that’s not too graphic. She likes adventures & mysteries with a tiny bit of romance (not over-the-top though). Any suggestions for her next binge watch? Thanks!
  15. Howdy. I’m looking for ideas on incorporating some easy math during movement or exercise breaks. I’ve got a 5th grader who’s not too hot on math. During this shutdown, we’re playing in the yard a lot & have a nice driveway (w/ a hoop & chalk) at our disposal. We also go on hikes regularly. What are some simple yet fun & educational math ideas I can use during these moments?
  16. I got NetFlix yesterday & so will do a search on it to see what’s offered. Thanks!
  17. I knew there had to be a whole subculture out there on this, LOL. Thanks & I’ll look into all that you mentioned!
  18. I just got NetFlix today and so am totally new to it. Before now, I’ve heard good things about various shows and I’ll need to peruse its offerings. However, we’re cooped up inside for at least 1 mth. and I’d like to know of any recc’s that are somewhat educational. I’d be watching it with a 10 yr old. Thanks in advance!
  19. I am not sure about Curiosity Stream—is it usually offered through the library? Anyhoo, I’ll try to figure it out. Thanks!
  20. Thanks! We’ll make use of the suggestions while the world’s hunkered down from Coronavirus!
  21. Hi. I’m looking for ideas on a movie about Ancient Rome. My 10 yr old takes Latin classes & I’d like to supplement the cultural aspect of her lessons with a movie that’s age-appropriate and informative yet entertaining. Any ideas?
