I'm driving my 13 yr old 14 hours to see extended family. I'd like some suggestions on audiobooks for this age. I don't really do apps so would check them out of the library. She likes mysteries but also fast-paced & action-packed books too. Thanks!

Yes, my kids like to finger knit in the car.
I'll need to look into that & see how it's done!

This puzzle cube is popular too: https://a.co/d/90ZvEjN

Bop It (if the sound wouldn't drive you batty.)
We have that & I tolerate the noise for just a bit. 😄

I posted before about a road trip to Boston this summer, which is 9+ hours from my house. I'll be taking my 13 year old & her friend. I'm looking for 'toys' (for lack of a better word) they can easily use during the round trip. What sorts of age-appropriate & engaging doo-dads can I stock the car with (so they're not bored nor in front of their phone screens)? Thanks!

We plan to go to Salem as well.

Does anyone think Beast Academy would be a good fit?

My 13 yr old & I are heading to Boston for a week in mid-July. I'm looking for any insider tips on places to go & stay, etc. I'd also like to know if you've any recc's on easy pre-reading material for her that'll give a succinct overview of the city, its sites, & history. Thanks!

Howdy. I've a rising 9th grader attending public school. In the fall she'll take algebra, condensed into 1 semester. Math's her least favorite subject so I suggested she pre-learn material this summer. Therefore, I'm looking for an online program she can use that's interactive, engaging, & preferably heavily visual. Any recc's? Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know of a site where you can type in your own words & phrases & it'll make cursive worksheets? I did it a long time ago with my daughter but I just cannot remember the website address now.

I'm at a loss for the title of the book that teaches the 50 states through drawing. Anyone recall its name?

Hi. This summer I’d like to boost my 7th grader’s knowledge of physical science (chemistry, physics, etc.) since she had an instructor this year whose explanations weren’t too clear or engaging (she goes to public school). I’ve got a couple books I’ll use but science is my weakness. I’m looking for some hands-on and potent activities I can use with her in order to bring to life the material we’ll read from the textbooks. Any & all ideas are helpful!

My 12 year old girl could use some ‘bibliotherapy’, if you will. She’s an avid reader but I feel the manga she’s into lately is dragging her down a bit. Can anyone recommend a book or 2 that’s uplifting, but not in a cheesy or ‘in your face’ kind of way? She loves action-packed books.

Thanks! I’ll look into what you mentioned. I should have also said I wanted documentaries. Thanks again.

I'm looking for videos on forensics & unsolved cases for a 12 year old girl. She likes the mystery & puzzle aspect of it. She's seen NOVA's 'Who Killed Lindbergh's Baby?' & enjoys it. I don't want anything too heavy or laced with too much shown violence, etc. (so no sexual crimes either). We've both Amazon Prime & Netflix and regular ol' DVDs are possible too. Thanks in advance!

I agree with Lori. Too much is cut from schools & hands-on parents are left to fill gaps. I am a PS teacher of over 20 years (in many states) & I’ve seen the same thing throughout. Learning for learning’s sake seems a relic for most students today. I believe there’s an imbalance of skills and knowledge with the former heavily stressed over the latter. Too narrow a focus in education leads to narrow-minded students.

I have taught public school for many many years. Performing better for someone other than a parent is not what she is describing.
Depends. I have a kid who drags her feet like OP said but does well with a tutor. No parent = better success.

The president and our state senator both responded to DD-the president with a form letter and packet of pictures/ other stuff, the senator with a letter that actually showed that someone had read DD's letter and responded to it over Lamar Alexander's signature.
That’s awesome the President wrote back. When my daughter wrote to Trump she got NO response. That deflated her and any hopes of remotely respecting him.

Old Greek , Modern Greek or Biblical Greek?
Good question! I’d say ancient Greek.

My 11 year old would like to learn Greek. I assume she’d study it leisurely and is interested especially in pronunciation. I cannot afford a tutor at this point. Therefore I’m looking for some decent self-study resources for a young beginner. Non-screen items are preferred. Thanks!

Thanks, folks!
