  1. I meant to say the last two of of your questions not the first two. SWB said that she was not putting that lecture's outline up, couldn't hear why. I do remember her saying that when supporting your thesis to always quote from the book. And keep asking why, this helps construct the paper. She also recommended two books- Essential Literary Terms and the New Oxford Guide to Writing.
  2. :iagree: This is why those that have the means come from other countries to the US to get treated. We had federal dental coverage with dh's last job, there were only a couple of dentist to choose from and the wait time for a checkup was almost a year in advance. The office was dingy, wall paper was peeling off the wall, the dentist started talking to me about a filling I supposedly had, when I looked at him and stated that I've never had a filling ever, he just grumbled and walked out. Fast forward a couple years, to my now private insurance dentist and it almost feels like royal treatment comparatively! Friendly, courteous, clean, accurate! Now I will say though that the gov't employee health insurance for docs and such we had was great! However, I'm fairly certain this bill is not going to be giving out the equivalent of Gov't Employee healthcare to the masses.
  3. Ugh, I loathe dishes. Vacuuming-no problem Toilets- no problem mopping on my hands and knees- no problem but dishes- BLECH! And I even have a dishwasher... :D
  4. I didn't notice that that recipe said whole wheat. It's whole wheat, however it's different from the whole wheat flour here in the US. The look and color of the flour is lighter than regular whole wheat, but not as white as white flour. At Indian grocers it's called Atta flour. The best way to make that flour would be to do a mix of half whole wheat and half white flour.
  5. I remember spending hours reading through the few books we had from an encyclopedia set. My parents only purchased the first few from the door-to-door seller. I'm another one of the more booky types, rather than online types. I picked up a set of Childcraft encyclopedias from our last library sale for really cheap- I think around $5!
  6. only refer to God, and not Jesus, Moses, etc. I'm religious but not Christian, and I'm okay with books or texts that refer to God kind of generally but not any specific God or prophets. I would just love some resources, and am not trying to be offensive in any way. Any subject, ds is only 5 right now, but I'd still be interested in knowing which curriculums are like this in later grades.
  7. Was it Puri? Here's a recipe if it was: http://www.ivcooking.com/p269_83.php These are generally eaten with something else, so I'd pair with either an Indian vegetable dish (fried potatos or chickpeas are good) or for something a little sweeter the pulp of a mango is great, its called Rus and you can find it in big cans at an Indian grocery store.
  8. Yes, this is very true, I always taste a pinch of the mixture first before frying.
  9. Hi Colleen, I didn't attend the last two on your list for the upper grades, but I did attend the Constructing an Argument one. To be honest, this was the least helpful to me, I'm sure it was great for the older kids and possibly parents of older kids though. It was hard for me to stay engaged with the lecture b/c SWB would ask the kids a question and we couldn't hear their answer so there were these period of silences that would occur and I'm kinda ADD and would lose focus. It basically outlined how to right a thesis statement and then support your statement throughout the rest of the paper. I didn't take any notes during this lecture since I feel I'm pretty decent at writing a thesis. (Okay, nevermind I'm not anymore, but I was at one time in my long ago life!:tongue_smilie:) The handouts and overhead pages that were used for most of the workshops can be found online at welltrainedmind.com. Go to speaking engagements and hit Nova conference. The first two from your question have the pages online and from the lectures I did attend they pretty much stuck to everything written. smiles, Tina
  10. YUM! Everyone's posts have been making my mouth water! I even prefer fried and salty snacks over cookies! Most of my fav's have already been mentioned, but I also love Bhajias/ Pakoras. These are an Indian fried vegetable fritter. You can use onions or potatos (or any veg. on hand, like green peppers, gourd, etc) Here's my quick recipe-I never use exact measurements. Onions cut in 1 inch pieces and/or sliced potatoes about 1/8 inch thick. In a bowl, put about a cup of Chick Pea Flour and add spices. I like Chile powder, Coriander and Cumin powder, a little garam masala, chopped coriander, turmeric and salt. Heat the oil in the fryer. Place the onions in the spiced flour, mix, add a couple tsp of water and mix. Add more water if the mixture is to stiff. Grab spoon and scoop out some of the mixture and deep fry until golden brown. Dip in ketchup or chutney. These are especially yummy on a damp or rainy day:D
  11. I'm sorry not correctly wording my thoughts in my previous post. Dobela- thank you for posting the member agreement form. That is the area in which *I* feel HSLDA encroaches a bit on how one should be homeschooling. It also bothered me that it states the the HSLDA has the right to revoke membership if information has been misrepresented. To me that is a gray area, b/c if you are an unschooler (which I'm not) and you agree to the term that you have a clearly organized program of instruction, they could revoke your membership. I clearly misworded (I know not a word) when I said curriculum. But again, the less we have to report what we do at home and how much of our day is spent teaching, etc. the better. Also, I don't like politics getting mixed in with homeschooling. Whether or not the gay couple up the street is married or not has no effect on our curriculum at home. There are other political groups that can be joined to lobby for or against those matters. I love the idea of having a legal entity to defend the rights of homeschoolers, but it would have to be solely about and for all homeschoolers.
  12. When I first read about my interest was peaked, but then I noticed that there were just so many threads on it and it's use that it just seem like to much work to try and figure out. I just thought how can putting a kids work in little drawers be so complicated:confused: I avoid complications! So now I just go right past any workbox talk:D:D
  13. :iagree: Tiger balm and arnica should help with the swelling and pain, along with some ibuprofen.
  14. I've been using the UK Mooncup for 2 years now. I love the freedom of it, but I need to explore other cups b/c its just not that comfortable for me. I alternate with cloth pads from time to time. Overall, I love menstrual cups, they are far superior to tampons as far as comfort goes and after the initial ackwardness of getting used to putting it in and taking it out its great and really simple to use.
  15. I would not join for many of the same reasons others who posted wouldn't. They lobby about more than just homeschooling and most of their stances do not sit well with me. They represent a certain type of homeschooler and not all the wide varieties of homeschoolers in America. They require a curriculum of sort to be listed with them on file- this is clearly not a pro-homeschooling thing to do. The less that we as homeschoolers have to provide to organizations about what we do at home then the less likely the gov't will ever mandate that we as homeschoolers must do xyz b/c this % of homeschoolers do xyz.
  16. Ours has an online form you fill out. When I requested a book they did get multiple copies for the other nearby libraries that are within the same system.
  17. We really like the Namaste mixes. Enjoy life brand cookies and such are tasty too. Ds can't do multiple diff. foods and Enjoy life has been great for that. Erewhon has a rice krispy type cereal that is really good too.
  18. George Mason University (Va) 2 years and Long Island University (NY) last 2 years. With a brief stint at University of Virginia in between!
  19. I've not read all the replies, but I definitely think you are overreacting. Ds has not yet been to anyone else's home on a playdate without me yet, but my SIL advised me since he was a baby that when the time comes to always ask the hosting family if they have guns in the house. And if so, are they unloaded and locked away out of reach from the kids. I can see why you wouldn't really think about it though since the mother is so anti-gun. I probably wouldn't either. Thank you for posting your experience! I'm so glad no one got hurt.
  20. Ds1 can't have soy, gluten, dairy or egg. He uses hemp milk and loves it. We sometime alternate with Coconut milk, there's a new brand out by So Delicious, that is great. It's found in the refrigerated section of Whole Foods and is in a milk carton container. Beware of all the foods out there that have soy in them, there are a lot. Mostly in the form of soy lecithin. Some are not bothered by it, but ds is. Also soybean oil, it's often part of the mix of oils that vegetable oil is made from. Again, some are less sensitive to it.
  21. With the new proposed changes in healthcare, we are more likely to see much more of this kind of private practice. It simply isn't practical for doctors to work more hours, see more patients and get less reimbursed for their services. After 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school and 6 years of postgrad training (residency and fellowship), most doctors are starting out in their 30s with up to $300,000 of student loans. Add to this the decline in wages and the increase of malpractice and liability. It's not that they don't care about their patients, they go into the field b/c they want to help. (This is not the 80s when being a doctor automatically meant rolling in dough, business sectors and IT sectors have much more money making potential and the amount of schooling and training docs have to go through is not easy) It's that they do care about their patients, hence the reason they want to give more individualized attention. All doctors obviously won't be using this model, but I suspect that as in other countries where there is "free healthcare" for all, there will also be much longer waiting times for appointments, sometimes months will be booked in advance. These countries also have the option of out of pocket payments to private docs who are more easily accessible. Just my 2 cents :)
  22. I have not yet had any direct experience with either, but this is what Jessie Wise told me at the NOVA conference when I asked her about them. She said that I could start FLL with ds1 (5 yrs) and later, add in WWE whenever he is ready to start writing ,as late as 3rd grade if need be, while starting FLL with ds in K. So I'm guessing it would be fine if the lessons don't match up.
  23. :seeya: I'm in Charlottesville. Laura, I'm not from NOVA but my dh's family is and I recall his sister talking about wanting to buy a house where her dd could go to Silverbrook Elementary.
  24. I've not seen it yet, but it's on my wishlist at Amazon- a DVD called Story of India by Michael Wood. ( oh, woops didn't see it already mentioned) We have Indian Children's Favourite Stories by Rosemarie Somiah and Finders Keepers-also from Amazon. I have a few others somewhere downstairs, I'll try to find them and post them here. (BTW- A big hello to my fellow Indian mamas on this board!:seeya:)
  25. I learned to try to get my reading in earlier, right now it's at night before I go to sleep. So this week, I going to make a big effort to get out of bed earlier.. we'll see how it goes.
