  1. My eyebrows were thick and they didn't have a great shape, but I didn't begin any eyebrow grooming until I was 15 or 16. At that point, I started having them threaded. That said, I'm not sure what age I would allow eyebrow grooming if I had a daughter. I want to say I'd wait until she's at least 14, but I guess it would really depend on how self-conscious she was feeling about it.
  2.:lol::lol: I would have gone one step further and offered them some of my delicious Klondike!
  3. Your response to him was great! And way more tactful then I probably would have been:lol:
  4. I've been in your boat all my life too. The 'skinny' comments are just plain rude and it's amazing the wide range of folks who make these comments.
  5. I pre-bake the crust, freeze it on a cookie sheet and then wrap it in aluminum foil. It never stays in the freezer long enough to develop freezer burn!
  6. :grouphug: I'm sorry for your pain. It does help to get it out.
  7. So far I think we will be doing the following: Reading- 100 EZ lessons, Right Brain Phonics, Bob books, AAS (not sure if that falls into this category) Math- Righstart Level B and some Singapore Level 1A Science- Outside play time and reading science-y type books Religion- Basics of Hinduism Foreign Language- Recognition of Hindi Alphabet Art- possibly a homeschool art class here locally or a woodworking class Read-alouds daily. ( Which I've really been slacking on lately) Wow, now that I write it out my thoughts have gotten a little clearer- I need to go write this in my notebook!
  8. I'm new to this, but I believe here in Va you have to just send in a notice of intent and an evaluation each year after the child is 6yrs. ETA- and I believe there is testing, but can't say exactly when, I'm sure someone with more experience than me will jump in.
  9. Thanks for the 'hugs'. It just bothers me that there are sites that one can go to to find out if there is a sex offender in the neighborhood and where they work, but not one (that I know of) to find out if there's anyone with a history of murder. These are some of the same thoughts I have. Even about aborting after there is an established heartbeat to some extent. See I don't know where I would draw the line. I don't think any doctor that is against abortion should be forced to have to perform it, though he should be able to refer the patient to someone else. But I also don't think that a prescription for birth control should be withheld if the doctor is anti-birth control. Or that a pharmacist should refuse to fill a morning after pill prescription b/c he/she doesn't believe in it's use. These are some of the things that would worry me with anti-abortion legislation. (BTW,I don't think a doc should be forced to lethally inject a death row inmate if he does not believe in the death penalty, but should be able to refer someone else.)
  10. I second the Razor Scooters, both of mine love it too. I've been wanting to get a trampoline, a big one, once we live someplace with yard. A race car track has been a hit around here too.
  11. My reasons for this are biased and personal. Both of my parents were murdered, and the person/persons that violently murdered them are out and about living free and well in society. They could be your neighbors, the roofer that spent a week working at your house, the Best Buy worker that helped you carry the computer to your car, your kids co-worker at a local restaurant...
  12. Another vote for NYC here! I'd check out the museums, eat a bunch of yummy food, go shopping and checkout a broadway show. Or A spa, not sure where though. I'd like something in the mountains, where I could get a massage and a pedicure and then sit outside with the mountain views and a good book.:001_smile:
  13. I can see that it may be difficult to see my POV, and no I don't think legalizing murder would change any pro-choicers stance. It's just confusing to me that it's usually those that would rather the gov't stay out of the personal lives of people then say they want the gov't to "make the choice that is best for the people". That's a generalization, not you personally.
  14. Wow, thank you all for your responses. My head is just kind of spinning right now trying to process all of the various insights. I guess just as it is difficult for some to understand how I see a big difference between a fetus and a 5 year old, it is also difficult for me to understand how the death of either is the same. I don't know of any magic number for when I think it would be too late for an abortion. I know I certainly think late term abortions should be illegal.
  15. Fair enough, but why are we humans allowed to make that judgement call over whether someone has negated their right to life? I completely agree, there are huge differences b/w a child and a criminal. What if it's a child criminal? Murder is murder isn't it, no matter what the situation, someone dies and someone else deliberately caused it. Again, just curious. These are things I've wondered for a long time, but I don't know anyone IRL I can discuss these things with. I am pro-choice and pro-death penalty. When I say I'm pro-choice, I'm not pro-abortion. I just think that it's not my right, nor the gov'ts, to decide on what another feels is the best choice for them. Even it's it's immoral, I feel in the end it's between that person and their God and God's Judgement. However, I don't judge pro-lifer's, again it's their choice to have their own stance. I, personally, could not have an abortion if I were to get pregnant again, even though I really don't plan on having anymore kids.
  16. Why are pro-life and pro-death penalty stances often on the same political side? I'm just asking because I'm curious, not trying to stir the pot. It's something I've wondered about for a long time.
  17. At what age do get get kids to clean the bathroom? Mine are 2 and 5:D. They do pick up their clothes and towels and ds1 wipes down the sink, but when should get them to start doing the tub, toilet and floors?
  18. Don't need to get to much here. Some Sharpies (for me), some 3 ring binders and dividers, and some page protecters. I stocked up on tons of crayons last year from Target, I think they were 20 cents a pack, still have a least 10 left!
  19. I know many families who believe their children should stay at home until marriage, but still believe education and a good career are very important to have. Especially daughters. In these cases, they attend colleges and universities that are commuting distances. They either get married after or during college. The majority of the daughters of the families I know go on to graduate school. To these families, even if their daughters choose to be SAHM's they must still have a solid educational background.
  20. Thank you for the replies! Tap- A ball would roll down without a nudge I think. It looks like about a 35-40 degree slope. Wildflower- Thanks for offering to take a look! I will try to figure out a way to cut and paste a pic and pm it to you. It's looks about 30-40 yards by 25 yards. :001_smile:
  21. We're looking at purchasing a home soon and we're having a hard time finding one that we both like, (house, location, price). We came across one the other day that we actually like on 2 points (house, location). However, the back yard is very sloped. We really want something more flat so the kids can run around. (We've been apt renters since marriage and have never had a yard, and I've been dreaming about a yard since ds1 could walk!) Have any of you been through the process of leveling a yard? How costly would it be? Was it worth it?
  22. :iagree: Teach them early, it's much harder to try and remediate a bad grip than to teach from the get go.
  23. What helped ds was to just break all of his crayons in half. We still use only broken crayons around here. When the writing object is small it forces the child to use the tips of his fingers to grip it instead of using his whole hand. I also told him this story. The mama and the papa (index and thumb) sit in the front of the car and the kids (middle, ring and pinky) sit in the back.
  24. Thank you both! I've mostly been looking at secular materials, but I actually do like the idea of bringing God into the various subjects, just not any one person's particular God, if that makes any sense. References to God are okay, but I'd like to be more a general term. I don't want to block out a whole section of curricula that could be really great, YKWM. I will look at TRISMS, thank you, I'd never even heard of it before:001_smile:
