  1. As an adult, I take it for granted that if I find that I need to get a drink or use the restroom, that I can just excuse myself from any situation and go. Why would I deny that same right to a child? Sure, they should be coached to "go" before a class, concert, play, etc. and to try to wait until the least disruptive time to make their exit but I'd never tell them that they couldn't go. A friend's daughter (age 12!) recently wet her pants at school because they are issued a certain number of tickets to use the bathroom during class and she lost her tickets. She said she didn't have time between classes to use the bathroom and was refused a break when she asked because she didn't have any tickets. Pegasus
  2. I started graying in my early 20's. I'm now 40 with lots of gray in my dark brown hair. If I could color it once and be done, I probably would. However, it's just not worth the maintenance to me and I prefer my gray hair to the look of colored hair with the graying roots showing! I've gotten questions from strangers about my age since the gray hair conflicts with a younger face. Even they weren't rude about it though, just curious. Pegasus
  3. Thanks. I'm just back from the doc and he says my pain is consistent with a rotator cuff injury. He suggested that sometime in my fever induced delirium that I stressed/strained that shoulder (even slept on it funny and cut off circulation). He did say that it is typical for flu aches/pains to concentrate in areas that have been injured in the past.
  4. Feel free to tell me to go to the doctor. I have an appt already made for this afternoon. I had typical flu symptoms on Saturday (high fever, body aches, chills, fatigue) but no respiratory symptoms or congestion. Still ran a lower fever yesterday and today but feel much better except for moderate to severe pain in my left arm (shoulder, elbow, and upper arm muscles). I'm not familiar with flu aches becoming localized like this. Any ideas? Pegasus
  5. Ya'll are awesome. I'm going to check for all these titles at our library. It would even be cool if they had more than one so we can compare the similarities/differences. We did that once with Stone Soup. We checked out several variations and read them all. Pegasus
  6. DD8 wants to check out a picture book that she remembers from the library. However, she can not remember the title or author. We described it to the children's librarian and after a valiant effort, she also failed to identify it. Here is her description: It is about a painter, set in either China or Japan, and if he finishes a painting completely, the object of the painting comes to life. The king hires him to paint a large mural so he paints it but leaves the eyes un-done. The people complain and pressure him to paint the eyes. When he paints the eyes, the dragons come to life, destroy the wall, and fly away. Any ideas? Some of the details may be wrong, she says it has been a long time since she read the book. Many thanks! Pegasus
  7. I've never priced Hawaii but I assumed that $4k wouldn't be enough. Maybe I'm wrong. I'll look into your other suggestions as well. DH and I have valid passports but I think the children's have expired. Shouldn't be a problem as long as I plan far enough in advance! I don't really have a timeframe in mind yet. We're still in the dreaming stage. :001_smile: Pegasus
  8. I wonder how far we could go and how many sights we could see before we ran out of money and had to come home. Probably depends on the price fluctuations in gas. It would be fun to find out! Pegasus
  9. We mostly visited family while in Sacramento but did take the time to do a city visit to San Francisco and spent a couple days in Yosemite. Oh my, I nearly keeled over carrying a toddler up one of those trails! I took a business trip to New Orleans once, years ago. I very much enjoyed myself. Thanks for the suggestions. Grand Canyon would be great and I've been thinking about DC. Decision, decisions!
  10. Oh! I do want to do an Alaskan cruise. Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to check prices. I'd love to do some of the unique Alaskan experiences. Peggy
  11. We received an inheritance earlier this year and have budgeted $4k for a family vacation. I need ideas for where to go and what to do. We are a family of 4 including DD12 and DD9. We live in East Tennessee and past vacations have included: Walt Disney World beach on Florida panhandle Chicago Sacramento/San Francisco northeast area north of Boston driving tour of midwest (St. Louis arch, badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Devil's Tower, and Yellowstone N.P.) local trips to Nashville, Chattanooga, Smokey Mtns I'm looking forward to seeing your suggestions! Pegasus
  12. Both DDs are listed in an online obit for my father and DD12 is also found on a list of Tennessee Fair entry winners. Pegasus
  13. I am embarrassed to have to ask but here it goes. DD12 received a U.S. Presidential one-dollar coin collection kit from an aunt. It already contains the coins that have been released and has space to add new ones as they come out. However, I can not figure out how to add new coins. There is a tiny slit on the side of the page that a coin could be slipped into but I can't figure out how to make sure the coin goes into the right spot and is oriented correctly. Let me see if I can find an online picture of what the book/pages look like. Oh, I found the exact one, if this link will take: http://www.jpscorner.com/images/Dansco_Presidential_Inside.jpg Thanks! Pegasus
  14. Thank you, everyone. I do think the interest inventories that Lori listed were what I was looking for. We'll give it a try. Pegasus
  15. I'd love some resources/advice on finding areas of interest for those students who just shrug when asked what they are interested in. Have you found any books or tests/interest inventories helpful? I seem to remember taking some kind of test in junior high and ending up with a list of potential careers that fit my interests/abilities. Has anyone found these helpful and where would I find something like that? My younger DD is "easy" in that she has definite interests, requests specific classes/opportunities, and pesters me until she gets what she needs. :glare: My older DD just doesn't seem to know what she wants. When we learn about a class or opportunity that we think she might like, she just responds with "I don't know." Thanks! Pegasus
  16. The german shepard had multiple allergies, including fleas and ingredients in regular dog food. We used a lamb and rice packaged dog food that the vet recommended. It was years ago so I don't remember the brand name now. She had to eat that always. We couldn't even give her a regular dog biscuit or table scraps because we could never be sure what would set off another allergy attack. This dog wandered up to our house when she was estimated to be about 5 or 6 years old. She didn't have any hair on the back half of her body due to neglect and her allergies. It took months of care for her to look healthy! Despite her rough start in life, she was the sweetest dog I've ever had. Pegasus
  17. It does sound like allergies. A single flea bite is enough to cause an allergic dog to keep scratching and scratching. Benadryl is good. Pet stores sell "hot spot" spray to help numb particular patches if the dog keeps worrying one spot. It's not really something you can use whole-body though. It can also caused by food allergies. We had a shepard that had to be fed a lamb and rice diet. Regular dog food would set her scratching and she'd make little bloody patches on her skin. Still, I don't imagine you want to change the dogs diet while the owners are away. If it were me, I'd call their vet tomorrow and see what they recommend. Good luck! Pegasus
  18. Beautiful! A couple of questions, if you don't mind. Would you consider this for a main floor? Our main living floor is on a concrete slab. Second, can you give me any idea of cost? Thanks! Again, it looks great. Pegasus
  19. I understand your reaction. It's not cheap and to be honest, it was a bit of a splurge for me. We'll take more than 6 weeks since we'll be working in library books on the subject, a textbook for my older DD, and perhaps some other activities as well. The one kit we have so far obviously had a lot of thought and planning go into it. I'm paying for this in addition to just the "stuff" that comes in the kit. Pegasus
  20. I've been thinking about this off and on over the years since I became a parent. I do not think that I am a perfect parent (or anywhere close!) but I do think I am a good parent and in some ways, I do think DH and I are a better parents than our parents were and I'm hoping that my daughters become even better parents than we are. So, do you think your parenting is better/worse/or the same than what you received and in what areas? I think we are better in the areas of safety, discipline, and openness (lots of subjects were off limits when I grew up). Pegasus
  21. He needs time, protection from being made to feel dumb, and continued speech therapy. DD11 didn't talk at all until she was 3 and then it was impossible to understand even for those of us closest to her. She went to a preschool and the teachers commented that it affected how she played with the other students. She wouldn't even try to talk and if a group of kids was playing house, DD was always the cat or dog, so she wouldn't have to talk. You wouldn't recognize the above description in DD11 now! She is a real chatter box and will strike up conversations with strangers (almost always adults, she's shyer around kids she doesn't know). Pegasus
  22. The only way I know to keep okra from turning slimey is to coat it in cornmeal and fry it. Add salt and yum! :D I can't eat it any other way. Sorry. Pegasus
  23. Yes! A couple thousand dollars would be a worthwhile investment to give the kitchen a face lift. Just don't get pulled into doing a major remodel! Pegasus
  24. I would be THRILLED to have only lost $2000 over the past several months. We've lost much much more. We are not only sitting tight, but continuing to invest. Look at it this way, when the market is down, everything is "on sale." If you tried to get your money out of your investments, you are selling low, the opposite of what you want to do. Depending on your tax bracket and how much you take out of a 401K account, you can lose almost half of the amount to taxes and penalties. Even worse, now that money won't be there for you in the future (along with all it's potential earnings) when you retire. Pegasus
  25. Gee, I'm not sure. When I try to thaw banana bread (or pumpkin bread) I get a layer of moisture on the outside of the loaf that makes a layer of sticky/soggy crumbs. I've started leaving it frozen and just slicing off frozen slices as we need them. The frozen slices are then defrosted and slightly toasted in the toaster. No sticky/soggy layer! Sorry. That won't help you here. Pegasus
