  1. A toilet sprayer: https://www.amazon.com/Bumworks-Cloth-Diaper-Toilet-Sprayer/dp/B00PRPO4HI It sprays clean water on stuff while your hold it over the toilet. Then you can throw the rinsed items in a nearby pail and take them to the washer. We cloth diaper and use it primarily for that, but it has a lot of other practical applications too.
  2. This essay by the author is relevant: http://time.com/5099463/kate-dicamillo-kids-books-sad/ She believes that children need sad stories so they can experience grief in a safe way and prove to themselves that they can bear feelings and real life experiences that would otherwise seem overwhelming. I agree with her.
  3. Starfall, Teach Your Monster to Read, the Endless series of apps (Endless Alphabet, Endless Words, etc.), Reading Raven, Learn With Homer. I think they all reinforce different skills with varying success. I'd start with the Endless apps first, then move on from there. I think Learn with Homer might be the most comprehensive, but it's also the most expensive.
  4. https://www.moviepass.com/ I would totally do it if our kids were older or we had regular babysitting available.
  5. Is primer pronounced pry-mer (rhymes with timer) or prim-er (rhymes with simmer)? I've heard people say both.
  6. Are you getting many false alarms? That's the only thing that makes me hesitant.
  7. I love A Slob Comes Clean. I already own the paperback but I'm considering getting the ebook for $1.99 today because I need reinforcement. We spent a week away on vacation, and then two weeks with a sick relative, so the house is a disaster. It was somewhat chaotic when I left (bad idea) but now we've brought back Christmas presents, laundry, toys, you name it. My goal for today is to get all the dishes and laundry done, and put everything in its place.
  8. If you decide not to do color, Mercury glass lamps can add some pop while still being neutral. https://www.target.com/p/small-mercury-glass-trophy-lamp-base-threshold-153/-/A-17083582#lnk=sametab
  9. This is not lighthearted at all, but have they seen John Rabe? It used to be on Netflix but I can't find it now. One of the best films I've ever seen, it's worth renting or buying. Here's the trailer.
  10. If you like or comment on a public post, your friends can see it. If it's friends only or group members only, three can't see it.
  11. A few years ago, I bought a California redwood sapling for my FIL. It's doing great. I buy a pack of our favorite Russel Stover chocolates (dark chocolate Roman nougat) every year for Christmas. It's great to just get the kind we like instead of the variety pack. I just bought a Nexx garage smart remote so the garage opens automatically when we get home.
  12. Habit. I want to cultivate good habits not just in terms of my daily routines, but also in regards to my relationships, our spending, and my general outlook on life (I want to train myself to be more positive). If I had to name my biggest flaw, it's probably that I'm not disciplined enough. I've read The Power of Habit and Gretchen Rubin's work. If you have any other suggestions, let me know.
  13. I ordered myself a subscription box, Play! by Sephora. For $10, they send you a box of samples for skin care, hair care, makeup, etc. I love mail and I love samples, so it's just my kind of thing.
  14. My parents never did. DH's dad did. Both of us do. The current version of the game my DD likes best right now is for us to pretend to be vampires who are trying to drink her blood. She has to pretend to stake us through the heart to "win."
  15. Wait. This is a church that is obviously copying the work of Bored Shorts TV. Not sure how I feel about that. Seems like they should maybe at least give a nod to their inspiration.
  16. They do a whole bunch of skits like this. They're great.
  17. We're very early on the homeschooling journey--I'm not sure I'd call us homeschoolers yet, although we do short dedicated math and reading lessons--but my plan goes like this. We have to school for 36 weeks by state law (when we eventually file). Six terms that are six weeks each seems like a good amount of time to focus on certain themes or units. Each six week term will be followed by one week off. That leaves us with an additional ten weeks of break. So we will take off one entire month every six months: the months of June and December. We'd still have 1 or 2 weeks left over after that. Those will probably be used as sick days.
  18. I listen to the Gregorian holiday station on pandora a lot. I also listen to one called Celtic Harp Medley. I'm a big fan of Corelli when I want stimulating classical music. Sometimes I put on the French Cooking station when I want something joyful in the background.
  19. Have you tried these? http://allrecipes.com/recipe/17165/big-soft-ginger-cookies/?internalSource=amp&referringContentType=amp%20recipe&clickId=amp_directions
  20. We only do stockings at Christmas. No other presents. We try to fill the stockings with meaningful gifts (not junk and toothbrushes) but it's really not the focus of the holiday. We forego presents so that we can take a winter vacation every year. I think experiences matter more. I considered having Publix stuff instead of actually making a dinner this year, but then after watching The Great British Baking Show, I decided it would be fun to cook a British themed meal, with beef Wellington, Yorkshire pudding, etc. It could be a disaster, but it will be fun to try.
  21. Hm. Not working. I'll have to come back and try later.
  22. Hot showers while hand expressing. Skip the compresses and go straight for an electric heating pad on the highest setting you can stand. The heat will kill the bacteria (a fever is your body's way of doing just that). But if I were you, I'd also get antibiotics just in case.
  23. I thought ikea ran 15% off their sofas on bf. I guess not this year. :(
  24. Slightly off topic, but have you guys looked at ThredUp? It's an online secondhand store. I just scored a $550 Armani wool skirt for $18 and another $70 skirt for $11. Most items have a 14 day return policy, which is pretty great.
