  1. I have been reading on The Pioneer Woman about homeschooling and online classes. I have an 8th grader and a 9th grader. We are taking Algebra 1 with Ms. Jann and we took Physics with Greg Landry this past fall. At the current time, we are not sure what our plans are for school this coming fall as my husband would like for the boys to take a class or two at a local private school so they can participate in school sports/activities. I am planning on them taking Geometry with Ms. Jann(she has done wonders for us since we are all horrible at math!). I feel like I can't teach the upper grades as well as I would like but yet I have read so much about the virtual school schedules, and work that I am hesitant to consider one unless it really met our lifestyle. We enjoy being able to travel with my husband's job, take the books and go and arrange our school year with our life not a school's schedule etc. We may not take off at Christmas but 4-5 days but we take off in fall for deer hunting and in spring for turkey season. We may also take off a day or so with my husband when we want to do a fun activity. That's why I love homeschooling...the flexibility. What do those of you who have kids in High school do that still allows your family life to be maintained? Also, for those of you who use online/virtual schools, is there one that you really love? I realize from signing up for class last year that most people jump on the good ones and I may already be too late for signing up for a class so I want to check on them now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  2. My husband(yeah, I know that is strange but he is the way who likes shopping more and he loves me to find clothes that make me feel beautiful and confident!)gave me a good way of justifying the cost of my jeans...the first time I bought a pair of jeans at Buckle, he said break the cost down over the number of years I usually get out of a good pair of jeans...that really helped! Plus, I am like you...love being able to buy clothing in a matter of minutes vs. days of shopping to find some that make me feel good in them! Before Buckle, I would buy jeans after jeans and push them to the side as I hated how I looked in them!
  3. First, I'm glad to know that there are others that deal with lack of patience and loose tongue! I always feel like such a disappointment to my kids when I let them see my frustration. I see it more with subjects that we struggle with and I also see my patience tested with my oldest son who is the opposite in personality than me. He is a more passive, less talkative individual and we seem say the same thing BUT in a different way that causes problems. My youngest son is the peace keeper that always finds a positive approach to most situations. I appreciate those of you who have advice in this situation. I consider it a weakness for me and it would definitely be the trait that I would like to change.
  4. Buckle is where I go for my jeans...I'm 47 and I know what you mean about the age thing BUT I love all my jeans from there! So does my husband! If you are uncomfortable about being in there with all the teens...I go on a week day(NEVER a weekend!) and in the morning. They are very helpful and can get a jean that fits your style and shape. They are expensive but not compared to some I see online that I would love to try! Also, Dillards carries Miss me jeans and I have a pair which I love as well. Good luck...I hate shopping for jeans.
  5. I was worried about the added expense of doing the extra things at Atlantis...my husband and I want to spend about $3000 or so for trip. I know that will go very quickly from what I have read so far about Atlantis and I really don't want to go somewhere and feel like we have to feel unable to do! The thing I like about Florida is that you can control your $$ and splurge when you want but still have fun and not spend much on some days. I would like for the kids to do some extra things but I guess I am clueless as to the cost of each of those activities. My youngest son is really into fish tanks and we have fresh water and salt water tanks so I think he would enjoy the aquariums even though we have been to Shedd, Atlanta, etc. As far as Florida...we are used to the white sands of Pensacola, Perdido Key...but we love shelling. We went to Newport Beach a year ago and we loved seeing the different tide pools and the kids loving searching for sea glass. I guess my concern on picking somewhere new to go in Florida is that we don't know anything about southern area and best place for $ $.
  6. thanks for the suggestions!! I will write the restaurants down...we like to cook at the condo as well as eat out. I personally think that I would prefer Sanibel...less the resort feel. I like the ability to do our own thing. I think my husband is thinking that Atlantis would be a more memorable vacation for the kids.
  7. We just returned from Atlanta yesterday...and we made it from Atlanta mid-town to Mount Vernon, IL where we live in about 7-7.5 hours. My husband drove it a couple of weekends ago in 6.5 but he drives faster than I do. But, I agree it is way too much driving to add to a vacation for me!
  8. My husband has been away for his job for a month. He mentioned today that when returns that he wants to plan a short trip this spring with our 2 boys...ages 14 and 15. He has always wanted to check into Atlantis and he found out from a co-worker that they are offering a buy 3 nights, get 4th night free. Has anyone gone and is it really worth the price? Also if you could take a 3-5 day trip this April or May...where would you go? We have always gone to Florida(Perdido Key) and stayed in a condo. We love being able to hit the beach, go sight-seeing in Pensacola, eat at local restaurants that the locals recommend. We are not people that just sit by the pool, water all day long. We love to shell in mornings, go to a museum or activity during day and back on beach later. I guess I'm afraid that it will be so touristy(?) and full of hidden expenses. Also, we live in southern IL and airfare out of St. Louis was high he said so the friend told him to check into flying out of Atlanta(where he is currently working)...I'm not crazy about driving 7 hours then dealing with airport check-in and plus having to do it all again in order to get home!! Another idea is heading farther south in Florida. A friend of mine once mentioned Sanibel Island to me...would it be a fun place and could we find a great place on the beach? Any ideas or input would be great...
  9. My husband has always used a Weber grill for years...a couple of years ago, he caught a deal where a store was discounting at the end of season on their Green Eggs. Oh, how our lives have changed...we love it! Cooked pizza, chicken, fish, brats, boudin, pork tenderloins, and of course ribeye steak. We have grilled veggies and pineapple as well. Our only regret is that we wish that we had bought the next size up! At the time, we were hesitant as we didn't know if we were really going to love it over our Weber... GO FOR IT!
  10. okay...so I'll be the first to ask...what does it mean?!?!:001_huh:
  11. I am 47 and I have dressed for a "particular age." I try to look my best for my age...not dress where my husband or kids will be embarrassed but I think jeans are a universal clothing item and can be worn by all ages...wasn't aware that I would ever be too old to wear jeans! My father once asked me when I was going to act my age and dress my age and I quickly replied, "hopefully never!" Both my husband and I have to remind ourselves that we are middle-aged because we don't feel it! I color my hair and have since I was in my early 20s...I plan on pre-booking my hair appointment for my funeral...just like always...every 6 weeks.! Wear what makes you feel good!

  13. Love the meaning behind it all!! It's beautiful...I would love to get one but I always think the picture would change as I age. If I had a tree like that...it might become a "weeping willow" over the years...
  14. Monopoly...and he always wanted to be the banker!! I preferred the much simpler games when they were that age like Go Fish, Old Maid! :001_smile:
  15. I generally test with the Iowa every year. This year my boys are in 8th and 9th and we are considering enrolling them in a local Christian school next year part-time. Have any of you tested with the CogAT and do you feel it would be beneficial for me to do considering the change in our school plans? I am curious about the benefits as it is additional $90 to order the CogAt as well as the Iowa. thanks for comments.
  16. See, this is why I tell my husband that TWTM is like having your own personal shopper, advisor, dietician, md, BFF etc...thanks AGAIN ladies. I will send these titles on to her.
  17. I am looking for murder/mystery books for my mom to read. She loves the show The Mentalist and I think that is really the type of murder/mystery books she is thinking of...not heavy on violence or gore and with colorful but realistic characters. Any suggestions? I know all of you are good to recommend books so thought I would ask here. thanks
  18. I grew up in Springdale, went to college in Fayetteville. My parents still live there and have for the last 40 years. It has really grown over the last few years. Beautiful area, lots to do with it being a college town(GO HOGS!). They have had a lot of snow this year but they have four seasons. My husband and I lived in Shreveport and then Lafayette for about 5 years. LOVED the food in Lafayette and miss it but now we live in IL. We want to move a little further south as we love it in the south but enjoy the four seasons. Arkansas will offer that. Great camping, hiking and biking areas. Good bookstores, and restaurants as well. My mom has mentioned that homeschooling is growing in that area as well. I would love to live there!!!
  19. GREAT QUESTIONS... and yes, if answers to these type of questions met your approval....tell him to have fun for me!!! And send postcards!!!:001_smile:
