  1. I'm sorry but I posted on your thread by accident. I was reading different messages and without realizing it, I posted my question on yours.! Sorry, my bad!!
  2. We are getting ready to make a hugh across country move. Currently, my boys attend a small Christian school here in Illinois but we are moving to a large public school in North Carolina. I homeschooled the boys thru 8th for my youngest and 9th for the oldest. When we entered this school, I simply took my list of textbooks and subjects to them, no problem. I didn't have anything formal that I submitted other than our yearly test scores. So, I contacted the school the other day and they told me if I give them the list of classes, etc that my oldest had for 9th grade that they would type a letter for us. My husband is concerned about this and is wondering if I should make my own transcript as well. I don't have a clue how to do a transcript. Any suggestions on a very simple form. I have read where some of you mention a transcript by subject...is that an easier more simplistic transcript? thanks for anyone....if I could hire this out, I would...I'm that bad at this kind of stuff!!!
  3. We have always homeschooled up until this last year...now that the boys have been in private Christian school, they do not want to go back to homeschooling for the rest of the high school years. Can you tell me high schools that you know of that are out in a rural area...they currently go to a school of approximately 125 students. We realize that this is probably not possible in a public school but we would love to move far enough outside of Raleigh that they could go to a smaller high school that would allow them to connect with kids their last years of high school. This move is killing my husband--he feels extremely guilty for moving the kids at this time. He and I have only been over about 4 times looking at houses( in fact, we have had two houses under contract which have fallen thru due to home inspections) but we are very discouraged due to house prices and lack of space compared to our home/acreage here in southern Illinois. I would appreciate any comments and advice. We are flying over again this week to meet with new realtors and start a search for schools and homes once again. His report date is June 4th and we don't know where to start our home search again.
  4. please give me your brother-in-law's name....our main concern is that we would like for the boys to go to a small school. We are now having second thoughts about Wake Christian. Our thoughts are that we might be able to find a house with more property and like we want in a smaller town out from Raleigh. My husband's new office is going to be located on Wesvill Court which I think is on the west side of Raleigh. He and I are considering him having a longer commute if we could find a small town with a good school out a ways...any thoughts? Please send me his realtor's site if he has one so I might be able to look at properties. thanks...
  5. Do you have any comments to offer on the Fuquay or Harnett Central...possibly schools around Jordan Lake....saw some homes on Realtor.com that we might be interested in that were located there. We have always homeschooled up until this year and the boys are currently at a small(approx. 125 total students)Christian school. We drive about 35-40 minutes to school now so we thought if we did find a home in a town further out that the boys might consider going to a public school...my problem is finding someone that might be able to offer any comments about those schools...good quality schools, positive atmosphere and teachers...etc.
  6. Cheryl, I see that you live in Cary so you should know the area and schools for sure...if we are considering looking PAST Wake County public schools and maybe even considering the boys not going to Wake Christian Academy, is there a particular town or county that you would recommend for public schools? We realize the size of the schools will be much larger than Wake Christian but if we could find a small town out about 30-40 minute commute for my husband, then we might consider a public school. My husband's new office I think will be on the west/southwest side of Raleigh...Wesvill Court is the street I believe.
  7. Jenn, What high school would the kids go to if we found a place in Willow Spring or even Angier? I am having second thoughts about Wake Christian and wondering if we should consider a public school if we should have to look further out. We currently have a 30-40 minute drive to school and my youngest son wants to have a shorter drive so he can be more involved. We have been told that the public schools in Wake County are sort of a nightmare but are do these towns have their own public schools? Would you recommend them? We are STILL waiting to hear if they will approve our request to stay here or if we have to move. The waiting is the hardest part right now.
  8. does anyone know about the high school that someone in Angier would attend? I think that it said the high school was Johnston county? Is it a good school? It is an area mentioned to us and there are couple of houses on realtor.com that I found that might be worth taking a look at if we should have to take the position. My husband did turn in his request to step back from the promotion but we haven't heard if it will be accepted. We have mixed feelings about the situation as there are trade offs to staying here in southern Illinois vs. moving east. We all love being that close to the beach, having nice shopping, fun activites(hockey games, mall, restaurants) butI cost of housing/property and school situation and being far from family are big issues.
  9. Jenn, my husband met a guy yesterday that mentioned Willow Springs. Unfortunately, this entire upcoming move/promotion has been such a strain on our family for right at a year in May. The branch of gov't he works in takes a long time to get things rolling with promotions and relocations. The process of it all has taken its toll on us all. If only we had been able to move last August before the kids started this school they are attending this year. He spoke to his supervisor yesterday morning and asked to stay here rather than put us through any more stress. The two districts are now in discussion as to whether it will happen. And to add stress upon stress, now after the boys told us they didn't want to move...they said maybe it is the right thing to move. They couldn't believe Dad called yesterday and asked to stay here. Honestly, we are all so confused but it is out of our hands now. We should know something this week and go from there. Thanks for the location suggestions. I'm making a list of them in case my husband has to go ahead with the job. We dropped our realtor we were working with and will find another that works more in that area. We have moved 6 times with my husband's work but never has it been so difficult. Teenagers, moving across country from aging parents, higher cost of living/housing/schooling/traffic...I just guess even though we like being close to a city that we are not a city people really.
  10. Several months ago, I posted that my husband accepted a position in Raleigh. The move is supposed to take place at the end of this school year for my children(9th and 10th graders) and myself. My husband will go over in early May. He and I have been over to Raleigh since January looking for houses and unfortunately, we haven't found anything like we are looking for in our price range. Our kids are not happy about moving at this point in their lives and leaving our house we have. We live on a 7 acre lake and have room to hit golf balls in front yard, play with our dogs and fish, ride our four wheelers around a bit etc. We have about 3 acres and live outside our small town of approx. 16,000. in southern Illinois We currently are considering Wake Christian Academy. They currently go to a small Christian school of about 125 total so we thought that school would be a good transition size. However, the realtor we are working with has said that we are not going to find a house like we are looking for with an acre or more lot close to school in the area. In fact, we found one house in Holly Springs(on a small lot but it backed up to woods) near a golf course(which is a plus for our boys) but the home inspection revealed too numerous of problems for us to pursue that home. We just visited over the weekend and showed the boys another home in West Oaks subdivision in Fuquay Varina but they- like my husband and I- don't really want to live in a subdivision. So, now we are considering looking outside of Wake Country and trying public schools...is there a good area on southwest/west or possibly northwest direction that offers a good public school that would be in a smaller town? We don't want to live in the city at all and my husband would be willing to drive 30 minutes or so in order to find a house/school that boys like? We are very discouraged at the thought of moving now as it is going to cost more to buy a home like ours there as well as the cost of school. My husband is seriously thinking of asking to back out of the job...but it may be too late. Can someone please offer some positive input on areas to look at for a rural home and good school options outside the Wake County?
  11. I'm sorry that I don't know her level/grade. When my kids were in elementary, we used "How to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", Wordly Wise and in Easy Grammar in upper elementary. I am thinking that she wants to go with more of a literature approach and not textbook/workbooks like they have in school.
  12. My husband's co-worker and his wife have recently began homeschooling their daughter. She is early elementary age. His wife is wanting me to recommend curriculum for learning English, reading comprehension through literature. She has her teaching degree and she substituted at the elementary school before she starting homeschooling. Her husband told me that she did not want to use "basal" readers...a term I don't know! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  13. Well, my husband and I are extremely disappointed in the school. The principal never called us today regarding the matter...but he did leave us a message returning a phone call my husband had given his office secretary regarding tuition balance! My son said his day was uneventful as far as the "bullies"...he said he tried to fly under the radar. We discussed going back to homeschooling and he said that he wants to try being more outspoken and standing up for himself but he is not sure how. A friend told him that the boys would stop calling him "gay" IF he showed more interest in the girls but he said since he has never had a girlfriend he just gets really nervous when he is around the girls. Two of the really popular girls "seem" to be friendly with him but they told him this past week that he is "socially awkward." I want to encourage to stay IF he wants to give it a try. thanks so much for encouragement.
  14. We have a call in to the principal...my husband talked with the director of advancement at the school and he said the principal would be calling us so we are waiting. He was appalled at what my husband told him.
  15. My kids do not want us to go to the school grounds to speak with the principal as they are afraid it will cause even more focus on my son so we are going to deal with by phonecalls. Would any of you be able to recommend a good book that my family can read regarding bullying? We are considering seeking a counselor of some sort but we live in a small town and we will probably have to go to Belleville, IL which is the closest town of any size(about an hour away). Also my husband did hear from one of the adminstrators at the school this morning regarding one of the boys...he is a transfer student that they have had previous issues with and just last night he made derogatory and inappropriate comments to an opposing basketball team's cheerleaders and the principal is having a meeting with the student about that event.
  16. thank you all for the advice....I have to say that pulling him out was both my husband's and my first thoughts. My concern for his mental and physical well-being is first and foremost. We have a call in to the principal and unforunately there is no guidance counselor at this small school. We stayed up late and talked with both of our boys about the situation. My husband was furious at the thought of anyone telling someone else to go home and kill themselves. He and I have decided to speak with the principal and tell him the comments and actions that have been directed towards my son. We are only going to mention the name of the one boy who directly bullied him. I am also going to also speak with a counselor this afternoon that my MIL has been speaking with who works with kids. Please keep us in your prayers.
  17. I have two boys that we have always homeschooled. This year we made the decision to enroll in a small Christian school(approx. 115 students). My oldest is a more of an introvert where as the youngest is a bit more of an extrovert. In fact, he has adjusted to school quite easily where as my oldest has virtually no friends. From day one, the oldest says he has nothing in common with the kids(he hunts, loves country music and has a southern accent...true country boy!) He has been made fun of...teased and basically, the boys in his class tell him it is just easy to pick on him because he's him! Today, he told me that he had $20 stolen out of his wallet in P.E. A little over a month ago, he had a pair of Nike Shox stolen out of his locker in P.E. He wants to quit school where as my youngest likes school, attends the activities, has a girlfriend. We are moving after this year to Raleigh, North Carolina and I thought going to a small private school would give them the experience so when we go there that they could try private, Christian or publice. At this point, I don't want to go Christian...these boys call him stupid, hit him, tell him to go kill himself and call him gay(which he is not but that should not matter period!) He says he just tries to be nice, and friendly but seems to be an target for their humor. He is extremely bashful around the girls despite the fact that he is extremely funny(has my husband's wittiness) and very cute. He says that all these kids have had 9 years of school to learn how to deal with the crap kids throw at each other...he hasn't had that experience and his self-confidence is blown. He loves to hunt but all these boys love team sports(which he has absolutely no experience at so they make fun of him for that...) any advice?
  18. We have heard that Cary has homes with small lots. We currently live on a lake outside of our town of 16,000 on about 3 acres. We don't have to have lake property or even 3 acres but we would prefer to have at least an acre lot and possibly wooded area. We love being outdoors with our 2 Labs, and have a fire pit we enjoy. We are really looking for a small-town feel and realize that may not be possible in an area like Raleigh. Our boys told us last night that they don't want to live IN the city and go to a huge school. That is why we are trying to find a small town with good school or especially a Christian school. I have not heard of this particular school you mentioned. A friend mentioned NRCA but she also lives north of Raleigh. We don't have a clue where we are going to look for a home and my husband's office will be on west side of Raleigh. Can you comment on the atmosphere of this school?
  19. For those of you who know someone who attends or has any personal insight about Wake Christian Academy, Grace Christian and North Raleigh Christian Academy, would you please care to share with me? We are leaning more towards private Christian school as that is what they attend now. The school is quite small-just over 100 students(9th-12th). I realize that the size of classes will undoubtedly be larger but I would love for it to have a close-knit and family atmosphere such as the school they are attending now. Also, do you have any input regarding financial assistance with these schools? I have seen on NRCA website that you can apply for it- we will have 2 students and at approx. $7000 plus additional school expenses per student....ouch! Now, I'm really stressed. Thought I had it all figured out for spring going the homeschool route but now questioning whether I should get my butt in gear and try to see if we can apply for seat in spring semester if at all feasible.
  20. What you mentioned has been a concern to both my husband and myself. We are only considering homeschooling as we don't know exactly when we are going to be able to move. Husband will arrive in December but we want kids to finish this semester here and we have even tossed around the idea of the boys and I staying here next spring(but that is only the last resort!) This is such lousy timing as I don't see how we can pull it together to get them enrolled in spring at beginning of semester. We will stay in temporary quarters and then possibly rent until we find a house and so we are not even sure what area of Raleigh we would be interested in residing in. It is incredibly difficult to try to make decisions when so much is in the air. thanks for the points to think about. I hadn't thought about the correspondence. I was just going to see if I could purchase the textbooks and use them for next spring.
  21. We are going to be moving to Raleigh sometime after Christmas...very up in the air at the moment of the time but my husband has to report to job at first of December. Does anyone have any input and info on homeschooling in Raleigh? We are going to homeschool in the spring(2012) and then find a Christian school if we can afford them to enroll the boys in. We have a sophmore and a freshman. I have been in contact with a friend who mentioned North Raleigh Christian Academy which seems really high to me but we currently live in a town population 16,000 and pay tuition of only approximately $4000 for both boys to attend a very good Christian school here. I will arrive in Raleigh after Christmas and I have spoken to a friend who teaches homeschool students at New Life Camp and I'm going to check into availability of seats in second semester for the boys. I'm interested in speaking with anyone who can provide info on local public schools around the Raleigh area...as well as input about private schools. We want to live in an area where we have a house with at least an acre or more...not a subdivision with postage-size stamp lots. please contact me if you have any info or advice regarding schools/areas to look for homes.
  22. THANKS to all who recommended the book...Crumpled Paper arrived today and I am already into it enough to know we are not alone!! I feel so much more encouraged and can't wait to read some more! thanks ladies for once again being my go-to resource for advice!:001_smile:
  23. Just got on Amazon and ordered this book to be shipped overnight. Hope that it could shed some light on our problem here. My husband and I just talked on the phone and he is really concerned about son...he is afraid it is something more than being shy. I don't really know. I told him that we should try to help him organize his assignments, set a good environment for study and back off a little. Just a thought...he was diagnosed with apraxia when he was very young had speech therapy. He has no issues now with speech. Does apraxia cause other learning problems?
  24. well, he has always to me had organizational skills...desk has always been cluttered and even his fishing tackle box is a mess. This to me isn't something new but it seems like it is more emphasized out in this setting at school. I wonder about the ADD...could it be something like that? Is medication somthing to consider?
  25. My family is going thru a great deal of stress at the moment. We recently found out that with my husband's job that we are going to be moving across the country sometime around mid-to-end of December. We will be at least 14 hours from the closest family(grandparents who by the way are our kids' favorites!). We have 2 boys...one in 9th and one in 10th. They are like many other siblings..night and day in personality, music interests, hobbies, etc. We have always homeschooled but planned on them going to a private Christian school when the youngest was in 9th so they could both go at the same time. Despite the fact that we are moving after this first semester, we all agreed for them to enroll in this school and give it a try to see how well they like it. We wanted this opportunity for them as they both play golf and we wanted them to get to play on the golf team as well as have the extracurricular activities. Then, if they didn't like this type of school, we would consider other options after we move. Well, youngest son has done great from the day of freshman orientation. He has made friends, has a girl that he likes, wants to attend the volleyball games. He is getting his homework done on time(even though it is a great deal of homework and he is still working late hours to complete it after golf practice, attending volleyball game). He is very upbeat, friendly and just seems to be doing great. He is still a typical teenager with some occasional teenager attitude but really no problem. Oldest son...he is one that I think suffers from low self-confidence. I'm not really sure why as we feel like we have always encouraged both boys. He is not much of a talker. It takes a while for him to warm up to people. In fact, he told my husband that it is hard for him to talk to people he doesn't know. I don't know if it is being shy or what but he says it just really makes him nervous. He has a really great sense of humor but often doesn't let people other than family see it...even though when people joket with him, he doesn't take to it easily. Some of the kids at school have told him that he is too serious and doesn't smile but he says he can't just walk down hallway with a goofy smile on his face. Just trouble connecting in general is my opinion. The main concern I have is that this past week I have seen signs that worry me... he lost his Bible at school in less than a week he is disorganized with his schoolwork...lost a worksheet that was supposed to be turned in...found it crammed in backpack after the due date. Didn't realize he had another worksheet for another class that he didn't complete/turn in and I found it in his backpack last night. he struggles with deadlines on homework even though he really tries...he just seems like he moves slow(I hesitate to use that word...he just never gets in a hurry with anything!) people have always called him "very laid-back" he is always the last one out the door, carrying his shoes, supplies... he does do well on grades....just like many of us...he has to work at it though. He is such a great kid and I am just concerned because I tend to be more organized and upbeat. He feels like he doesn't have friends like brother and everything just seems like it falls into place for brother and not for him suggestions, comments, I need some encouragement as I hurt for him. I told him that this is a HUGE adjustment for us all...having so much homework when with homeschool, we never did. The adjustment to leaving our house at 7:15 in morning and on most days right now, they are not back at house until 5:30 or later and then homework. Both boys have risen to the task and are trying but it just seems hard for him.
