  1. I use SM US edition. From what I understand, it is missing a couple topics included in the Standards edition. Those topics are covered in Dimensions 6 which is part of the reason my older DD is doing DM 6 even though she completed SM 6. If you’ve used the Standards Edition and don’t think your child needs a review year you might be fine to skip to DM 7.

We do use all the books too- workbook, test book, extra practice, challenging word problems- and not just the standards edition text.

I’m excited to move to DM7.

    Thank you!

  3. We've used Singapore Math SE and are not having problems with it. We are now on 5B, and I am ready to buy the next level which should be 6A/B. But I did read old posts here of whether to continue with the level 6 or not. I didn't follow to what each person ended using because I wasn't in that situation at that time. Now I am. I also went to the Singapore Math forum and found this.

If your child did either Standards edition 5A and 5B, or Common Core edition 5A and 5B, s/he would not miss any topics by then doing Dimensions Math 7. That is the only case where this is true. It is not true for US edition, it is not true for New Elementary Math. Whether your child should do 6, depends on the child, some need more consolidation or easier/slower introduction to new topics."

I do understand about not finishing a good book, but we will finish 5B strong and that is the end of that book. My understanding is that SM 6A/B, SE were written so that the students who have been having difficulties with the advance Singapore Math SE in the lower level books could catch up.

I'm glad 2ndgenhomeschooler shared her experience on both SM 6 and DM 6. I'm thinking I'll just follow her advice.

  4. I knew they had redone LCI. I didn't know they had taken out the FMOR on the tests. I still use an older edition. :) I would still read it alongside. It's a good book for any age group.

    I agree.

But since we follow Memoria Press core subjects (mostly), the Famous Men of Rome is done in 4th grade (accelerated track) and Greek Myths is done in 3rd grade. So, I made sure we cover just the Latin during Latin.

ETA: The Roman History test of the new LC is separate and not mixed in with the Latin tests, but it's there. The test is two pages long and on its own.

  5. Memoria Press updated the Latina Christiana l and it's now Latina Christiana, 4th edition. Here.

The Rome history of the old LC1 tests are not in the new LC tests anymore. The Rome history notes and maps are still in the student and teacher books but not part of the weekly lessons.

What my 3rd grade is using for LC, 4th edition: DVD and CD, student book, LC Review Worksheets, flash cards, and Ludere Latine. For the Lingua Angelica when scheduled (not every week), we just listen to it from the Lingua Angelica cd and then recite it (some prayers were memorized when we did Prima Latina) because we do the translation in 4th grade with FFL (for us, anyway). Here.

Everyday we drill, recite, memorize...Latin is as important as Math if you follow Memoria Press. Day 1 is the longest if you let the DVD teacher teach, it will then be followed by writing the vocabulary. You can also check MP sample lesson plans- 3rd grade accelerated track.

My 4th grader is using FFL right now and Lingua Angelica is also scheduled per week under Enrichment section, and it's a separate book. 4th grade accelerated track.

Maybe you can do the drilling with CAP Latin everyday (I don't know how CAP does it) and stay with it if you like it. In the beginning of our homeschool (only doing it for 3 years so far), I thought of switching to CAP but didn't. Now I am used to MP guides' layout and loving it.

  9. The MP Christian Studies is very thorough and organized. I am Catholic and so I use Faith & Life with the Christian Studies. By 6th grade we will shift to a Catholic Bible study.

I think Prima Latina and Latina Christiana 1 are both beginner programs. There are less activities to be done in Prima Latina (perfect for a 2nd grader) and more exercises and words to memorize in Latina Christiana 1(appropriate for a 3rd grader). Maybe on this one you can call MP for guidance.

How do you all like the Christian studies? I'm considering apologia's Who Am I for comparison (although that's not set in stone either).

Where would you put a 3rd grader in for Latin that's never done it before?

I like that a lot of it can be done orally, that's helpful!

  10. Lol! Sorry.

Next school year, MP materials for 4th grade: First Form Latin, literature guides, Famous Men of Rome, Christian Studies 2, Geo I, Insects.

3rd grade: Latina Christiana 1, ATFF(IEW but MP uses it), literature guides, Greek Myhts, Christian Studies 1, Astronomy, States & Capitals, Read Aloud list.

1st grade: all in the MP 1st grade core except Math and Handwriting, 1st grade Enrichment

  11. We used Prima Latina and the 1st and 2nd grade MP literature guides last year. We were using it with Kolbe 1st and 2nd grade plans. My sons wrote down all the answers to the comprehension questions and we still had fun.

With 3rd grade this year (MP 3A core except Math & Cursive), my son is writing down the answers to all comprehension questions in Literature, Classical, and Christian Studies. He is focused, fast, and doesn't complain but we don't have time to do anything fun anymore. So next year with my upcoming 3rd and 4th graders, we will do what most of the MP homeschoolers in the MP forum are doing, answering the questions orally except for the ones that will come out in the tests. And my sons love to do the enrichment and activities portion of each MP lessons so we will still do that.

The English Grammar Recitation is meant to be used with the MP Latin. The first day of each lesson is the longest because the student copies (writes down) the grammar rule being discussed. Then the rest of the week is just recitation of the rule and answering a few exercises. Next school year though, I will use Rod and Staff (or FLL) instead of MP EGR because I want more exercises.

We are also using different Math, Handwriting, and Spelling. It's not a problem at all.

  12. We will be using Classical Writing (Homer A) next school year, but I plan on using WWS by middle school.

I actually just saw that there is a written comprehension response booklet for SOTW. We only do oral answers right now. How many essays are expected for middle schoolers? My DC is only in 4th grade but I want to slowly adjust him to the amount of essays he should be answering in middle school.

I see you are using CLE Reading. Do you answer all the comprehension questions?

I did writing within content areas, though not formal essays, in 6th grade when I wasn't using an additional composition program. So history, science, etc. was our writing source material.

I didn't use SOTW in 6th, but we did write responses to history--say compare/contrast two movements or explain the causes or effects of a particular event.

I've moved to an actual composition program in the last couple of months, and haven't assigned much writing outside of that so far. We still answer those types of questions about history or science--we just do them orally for now.

What are you using for composition? How much writing does it require?
