  1. Which one should I choose for my rising 3rd grader? We've done very little formal grammar up to this point. She says she wants to do FLL because she'll get her own workbook. :) I just didn't know if there was anything that might help me make my decision. Also, if you've used FLL3, are there any activities in it like there are in FLL 1 and 2 (Picture studies, copying and drawing a poem)? Thanks so much
  2. Dictionary markings!!! I loved the program otherwise.
  3. How did you buy just the recitations? Did you have to call them?? Thanks!
  4. Thanks so much. My kids do not need manipulatives. They think they waste time. They'd rather just do the problems! :) I'll go look at R&S again. I like the price too!
  5. We are doing Singapore this year and it's just not a good fit. I don't like all of the books (HIG, Textbook, and Workbook). I want more practice for my children and I KNOW I could drill or supplement with something else but I want it ALL pulled together for me. I'm not concerned w/Mastery vs. Spiral. I am more interested in having something that is EASY to teach and will eventually have work my children can do by themselves. I also want a rigorous math education for my kids. Next year I'll have 3rd, 2nd and K. Thanks so much for the help.
  6. I'm doing it this year with a 7,6, and 5 year old. They all love it!! It's their favorite part of school. We just read a little, talk about it, do the jr notebook journals and some of the experiments.
  7. I'm having a very hard time deciding which math program to use without being able to actually use them. Many look so great but I have no idea how that would work in OUR home. How do you end up making the decision? I feel like I'm going to end up spending a ton of money just to see and scope and sequence is so different from program to program, I'm afraid of switching without putting the kids behind. Any suggestions on how to decide? I'm looking at singapore, mm, cle, and mus.
  8. Can anyone help me decide between these 2 programs? I have 6 children, only 2 are school aged, so i need something that gets the job done but also that isn't very teacher intensive. this will be for second and third grades. also, we have tried fll and it's not a big hit here so i don't want to use that. Thanks for the help!
  9. I've used both too. HA is a great intro for very young students (1st grade, 2nd grade). Elementary Greek is too fast moving for very young students in my opinion. If your child is going into 3rd grade, you could either move quickly through HA 1,2,3 or try Elementary Greek one and be prepared to move at a slower pace if necessary
  10. Ok thanks. So it looks like I need to save MOH for a few years and either do American or look into Biblioplan or VP. Great, more decisions. :)
  11. I'm about to drive myself crazy. I bought MOH but now I'm questioning if it's going to be too much for my 1st and 2nd grader. I don't want to do STOW because of the lack of a biblical worldview. So my options are just to flesh out and tone down MOH or to do American History for a few years until my girls are older. I'd be looking to do Beautiful Feet, TruthQuest or A Living History of our World. Any suggestions???
  12. I chose Ray's just because I wanted something different from Singapore for a supplement. However, I might change once I get my hands on ray's. I may end up buying CWP.
  13. Thanks so much for the help. I decided to stop driving myself crazy and go ahead and order. :) Bible: OT Math: Singapore 2A/2B and Ray's Primary for additional word problems Grammar: FLL 2 Writing: WWE 2 Spelling: Spelling Plus History: Mystery of History 1 (on a 2nd grade level) along with the Ancient Egypt kit from Hearts and Hands Science: Apologia Astronomy Cursive: Pentime Greek: Elementary Greek (we did Hey Andrew last year and I know I'm to have to take this slowly) Read Alouds and Literature: TBD based on History and other classic books. Is there anything glaring that I am missing?? Thanks so much!!
  14. Grade level doesn't always match ability level. Always do placement tests. And always reevaluate placement if a child is either failing all tests or getting 100's on all tests. Ok Thanks! She's my first so I'm still trying to get everything figured out. I appreciate that advice and will certainly do that from from no on
  15. Thanks for the responses. She is only in 1st grade so she is in CLE 100. I'll try to see if I can figure out why she doesn't like her. I've asked her before but she just says, "I don't know, I just don't like it." You all have given me a lot to consider so thanks!
  16. Thanks for the help. I'm seeing a lot of recs for either Singapore, MM, or Horizons so I'm going to check both of those out. I guess I'm going to have to just decide and stop obsessing about it. :tongue_smilie:
  17. My first grade daughter hates CLE math. She "gets" it all and makes 100 on every quiz/test, but she really just hates. (I do NOT make her do every problem.) I, on the other hand, like it because it's very easy to teach. My DH says she might just need a different approach? I know math just needs to be done but I'd like to keep her from hating it if possible. I just get overwhelmed when I look at all of the other choices out there! Does anyone have any advice/suggestions??
  18. Thanks for the help! You have made us very happy. :)
  19. I'll be watching this thread. We have 5 now (only 2 in school) but hope to have at least 1 more child. I can imagine it's going to be hard! I'll be listening for what others have to say!
  20. My first grader just read the first Harry Potter book. Should I continue on with phonics?? It seems like a waste of time to me but I don't want to stop if I need to keep going? We are using Christian Liberty Press Phonics right now and they even have a second grade book for next year.
  21. Ok, you all have made me feel better. :) Thanks so much. I really do love it and think it works!
  22. I use CLE math and love it and I know a lot of people on this board do as well. It makes me a little nervous however that no one I know in real life has ever even heard of it and that well know home schoolers like Cathy Duffy or SWB have never even given an opinion on it at all. They have given reviews on Rod and Staff English so I know it's not that they just don't review obscure companies. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm starting to wonder if I should look elsewhere for math even though I like teaching it, etc.
