  1. My son really wants to learn Polish as his high school foreign language credits. How would you go about doing this? Has anyone successfully used only Duolingo or Rosetta Stone as their program? I know they both have a Polish program. I know a native speaker and might be able to get him together occasionally but not enough for it to be a tutor situation. Any ideas?
  2. My son likes AOPS and their online classes. However, we need to stick to more of a traditional high school math progression with him and not all their extra classes. What is the recommended basics from them along with their traditional equivalents?
  3. Any suggestions for a freshman who has not taken a formal writing course previously? We had started with IEW a few years ago but that left him frustrated. I thought about using WWS but trying to skip level one left us confused on what to do. He is beyond that. He needs to be well prepared for college writing by the time he graduates. Thoughts?
  4. Not sure if I do know completely what to do. We had our evaluations done through a program at a local university. They do 2 different evaluations there, one done by an educational psychologist that included IQ and then a second visual perceptual evaluation. We had our 10th and 3rd grader do the ed pysch exam. Both showed slow processing issues and both did well on the IQ part, neither is performing up to their potential. I had completely glanced over his statement that they will do poorly on standardized tests until after the PSAT scores came in and I reread the report. Did not do the visual perceptual exam with my eldest as at that time I did not think it was warranted. Now, I am wondering if it might be after the results of the other 2. It seems like she is not performing as well as she could be but I know there are struggles with working too and know there is some add there too. It is hard to know what is reasonable for her. We lost years of reading with her because of eye issues and completed vision therapy to get her eyes working so she can read. But that love of reading she had has not returned. At least she is not getting so many headaches from reading. She was a voracious reader before her eyes started causing problems when she was around 8 yo. I am really confused at how to help her. My 4th grader we knew he had adhd and did not feel like he needed the ed pysch exam but were unsure of dyslexia issues. He came up borderline dyslexic. I knew the 3rd grader had a lot more issues so we did both tests on her and are glad we did. There are 2 programs they want to use to help these 2 kids. One is PST2 or something like that, then they want to use a program called Reading Plus. They seem to also be pushing sight words which I disagree with. I had not pushed hard with phonics and I think they need that. My older kids picked up reading without phonics. These 2 really struggled and the 3rd grader still really cannot read. Recently started LOE with the 3rd grader and that seems to be going well but time will tell. Math is a struggle too. Again, what worked well with the older kids is not working with them. In the spring she was 2nd grade and could do very simple addition and simple subtraction. But you put both on the same page and she was confused. So I ditched the Singapore Math book and gave her pages of simple addition and read LOF. She can now do both addition and subtraction on the same page. Not sure if I should just keep up with LOF and some math practice pages or what. My 4th grader can read but it fluency issues that he has. I have been told to have them not write for school except as penmanship. So I had 4th grader do spelling by typing the words on Friday and he finished in 5 minutes vs 30! Also, reading has to be done carefully. And everything seems to need lots of involvement from me which is difficult with 6 kids. Is there a way to do math without writing? I am wondering if that is part of the math struggle. Somethings I have an idea of what to do others, I'm just confused. And just overwhelmed. Thank you if you made it this far.
  5. Hi y'all. I have 6 kids, 16 down to 2 yo. We know that 3 of them have slow processing issues and we think a fourth as well. My 4th grader was just diagnosed adhd and mild dyslexic as well. The 3rd grader is strongly dyslexic and has dysgraphia too. Beginning to wonder if I should have the older 2 kids who have processing issues tested for dyslexia as well since they both have processing issues. We know something was going on with our kids. Still trying to figure out practically what this means day to day. It is a little overwhelming. They all show traits to one degree or another of add, some much more so than others. But both parents have it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Tara
  6. Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I will look at each one today. He is turning 16 and is in 10th grade. He should graduate next year. I agree his day to day English will be better, but he will be tested on formal English and grammar. Sadly those skills are not used as much in school. Listening to the audio while reading the book is a fantastic idea! Being able to read a book and discuss it in a different language shows a good mastery of the language to me. But it is not what he needs to pass tests back home.
  7. We have an exchange student this year who is enrolled in the local public school. He is concerned with being behind on his English studies when he returns home. He will have to take some exams. English class at the high school is just literature pretty much. He needs grammar and vocabulary from an English as a second language point of view. Any ideas of good resources or programs to help him learn?
  8. Can anyone recommend any of The Great Courses to use with Medieval History? Thanks to the recommendations here for Ancient History we found a fantastic course that for the first time got my high schooler to engage with history.
  9. Do the guidebooks come with the course if you buy from them or is it extra? It is asking if I want to add a physical transcript to my cart. Is a digital one included? Thank you for your help, this is my first time purchasing from them.
  10. What is included in their guidebooks? How important are they? It is available much cheaper streaming on Amazon but I am assuming no guidebook that way.
  11. What are your favorite courses from The Great Courses to use with ancient history? Are there any that you would not recommend?
  12. If we register for a course but do not attend live will we receive a recording? Our summer plans are still up in the air and I do not want to miss some of these.
  13. After completing The Bridge to the Latin Road we have some grammar basics. Any suggestions on a Latin program?
  14. We have been using The Latin Road to for Latin because I had heard good things. But I am not sure it is a good fit for us. We started with The Bridge to the Latin Road to learn some grammar. Grammar is my weakest area. This was a great program for us. My daughter and I watched the dvds together. She often caught on before I did, lol. So we moved on to TLR. So far TLR just doesn't seem as clear to us and we having a difficult time getting through. I wanted this because they say you learn both Latin and English grammar. I would like for her to learn Latin, but we are just now beginning in 9th grade, I would also like a strong grammar background. Any suggestions? Should we just keep plodding through? Will it click at some point? Do we need a separate grammar program?
