  1. Time for brutal honesty here. Is anyone else absolutely dreading the end of break? I love having my kids home, but I’m tired of the schoolwork battles. My two youngest hate reading, they hate math, they hate writing. Basically if it doesn’t involve playing outside or Legos or screens, they hate it. We’ve done private school before and I may be forced into it again just so they’ll get an education, but it would make me really sad to give up the homeschool lifestyle. And no, they don’t have any learning disabilities. They are extremely bright 8- and 10-year-olds who can do the work when they set their mind to it. The only thing they will submit to willingly is being read to. Put a book in front of them or a pencil in their hands and they balk.
  2. https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/harvey-weinstein-scandal/amp/nbc-news-fires-today-anchor-matt-lauer-after-sexual-misconduct-n824831 I’m to the point where I pretty much assume that everyone I see on tv is either a perpetrator or a victim of harassment.
  3. Could we make a list of academic award opportunities that are available to high school homeschoolers? I know this is important for college applications. I think all I ever did was take the National Latin Exam.
  4. Vivian (or Vivienne) is getting trendy again. Margo, Edith, and Agnes are the 3 little girls from the Despicable Me movies, so look for those names to make a comeback. I know a 10yo Mabel, a 9yo Olive, a 7yo Nancy, a 2yo Evelyn. One of my FB friends has a Petra. I say go ahead with any “old-fashioned†name you want. To me the gross names are the trendeigh ones (spelling for snark).

  6. Thank you all, don't know where I'd be without this board! I am keeping her in 7th grade. Next year in 8th she'll do World Literature, Advanced Algebra, Spanish 2, but I'll keep going with Ambleside history and let her do astronomy for science, holding off on Biology till 9th.
  7. Clarification: the actual advice I received was that I don't have to graduate her early, but do the grade skip now, call next year 9th grade, then add an extra year of high school to avoid graduating early. That seemed even more confusing than graduating early with a gap year.
  8. The advisor at our umbrella school said I should change dd's grade designation to 8th instead of 7th so the high school classes she's doing can count (apparently in our state, you can get credit in 8th grade but not in 7th).
  9. Use a metronome and force yourself to keep with the beat no matter what.
  10. I think it should be left alone except for reminding the girls to wear their uniform for events. I really hesitate to assign motive to a 12yo. Maybe the dress was her favorite and it fit her fine before her major growth spurt two weeks ago, and her mom gave in and let her wear it just so they could get out the door. Calling her out on it and making it a modesty issue in that case will be really awkward for the poor kid. Not that I would know anything about stubborn emotional 12-year-olds that outgrow clothes faster than I can buy them.
  11. So, any input from the parents who have graduated kids on whether a B here and there kept the kids from opportunities they might have had otherwise with a 4.0?
  12. Is it worth taking a harder class and jeopardizing GPA when colleges primarily look at GPA for admissions and scholarships?
  13. Could we have a master list of high school foreign language courses offered online? I'll start: Well-Trained Mind Academy: French 1 & 2, Latin 1, German 1 & 2 Lukeion Project: Latin 1-6 (including AP), Greek 1-7 PA Homeschoolers: AP Spanish Wittenberg Academy: Greek 1, Latin 1-4, German 1-4 Please give reviews of any of these you've used, and add more that you know of, especially classes in other languages! My oldest is in 7th grade, so I am just getting started. She is taking Latin and Spanish now because it's convenient, but she isn't really excited about going further with either language. She wants to become fluent in a language that interests her. I want her to pick something that she can continue all the way through AP level. Whatever language it ends up being, I think an online class is the best option for her to learn. Local classes are limited to Latin or Spanish, and she's just not the kind of kid who's going to buckle down and teach herself.
