  1. My cousin is thinking about homeschooling and asked me if she could do this. I said yes but my household would be totally different than hers. I have 2yo twins running around while I school my 8 and 9yo and she would be doing school with a 9yo and 7yo. I was thinking of having her come while the twins nap and I do school. The hard thing for me would be to not talk. We like to talk a lot and my kids really need my attention during school time.

  2. I've never been to a potluck wedding but I wouldn't mind going to one especially if it was family. I'd rather them be able to have their family and friends there to celebrate and get their moment than have to miss it because they can't afford to feed everyone. My cousin got married at a courthouse and we all met at a restaurant to eat and celebrate after. We all paid for our own food and none of us minded. He had been through a lot to get to where he was and we were so proud of him and just happy to be there.

  3. My kids can both fill in a worksheet filled with clocks perfectly and then ask me what time it is because they can't read the clock on the wall.... The questions like "Billy started swimming at 8:43 and swam for 39 min what time did he finish" throw them through a loop also. I'm having a hard time finding a supplement that goes over those kind of questions. Most books are filled with clocks on 8:45, 7:30 etc. Great for 1st and 2nd grade, not so great for older kids.

  4. I have our main bookshelf where I keep all the kids fun reading books, a bookshelf for homeschool stuff we aren't using and I have a homeschool cabinet. I keep a basket in our homeschool cabinet of books we are reading for the year. I have them in the order I want to read them and we just pull them and read. After the year ends I put them in either the not being used school bookshelf or fun reading bookshelf depending on what books they are.

  5. I don't mean a lesson like lesson 1 in the book mon, lesson 2 in the book tues. I was doing the pages the teachers manual had laid out. One day it would be pretest and a page of guided practice, another day more guided practice and some workbook pages. We are on our third week and I think we just started lesson 3. Yesterday in 1 hour she only finished 9 problems.

  6. New to this thread (this site really) but it's really comforting to hear other people have ups and downs like we do. Some days I feel like I'm failing at this (3 weeks into our second year) and other days I feel like we are doing amazing and on the right path.

    Our good:

Switched my 3rd grader to Math Mammoth this week since saxon was taking her about 5 min a day and she is doing so good. She loves it and is asking if she can accelerate through it to get to the 4th grade level. I feel like we are finally getting back into the school groove.

    The not so good....

While my 3rd grader is doing amazing at math my 4th grader is doing horrible with MIF. We are thinking of switching her to saxon. She's dragging her feet and not getting anything. By the end of the lesson she's pretty much crying and I feel like crying with her. Praying saxon will be a fit because I do not want to be switching math since it builds. I'm also not doing spelling daily like I should be. I'm really not into AAS but I'm sticking with it. I did not do my busy boxes for my 2yo twins this week either so they watch more cartoons than I would like. I am filling them up friday night so I don't get busy and forget again.

  7. Ok, I think I will let her go back. The 2 hours a day was partially my fault for pushing her to complete what the teachers manual said she needed to complete but part of it was her going super slow because she didn't like it. Math has always been hard for her so I keep trying to find something that helps it click better. I'm starting to think no matter what math is just not going to be her strong suit. It's hard for her also because her sister in 3rd grade excels at math and is starting to pass her up.

  8. We are with a charter and I just buy a ton of fun stuff to go with our history and science. We are doing anatomy so I got the squishy science kit, my body book to make a life size human body. History I am doing american history while going through the american girl books. We are buying craft kits that go with each time period like a flower press, hoop to make a sampler, scrapbook box (decoupage), gardening (victory ww11 garden), composting, tie dye, sand art and I'm thinking of ordering time capsules and having my girls fill them with current event things. We buy most of the curriculum ourself so I use our money on fun stuff that will add to what we already have. My younger daughter also has asked for some rock kits so I'm ordering that for her. I also bought some games and time tales (dvd to help memorize multiplication). Oh and ink and paper. You can never have to much of that.

  9. I'm on my second year of homeschooling and am having a really hard time finding the right math program for my 4th grade daughter. She went to public school before homeschooling and they did Saxon. She's never been really good at math so I thought maybe it would help to switch her curriculum. She's a visual learner so I tried MUS. She hated the video's and still struggled.I also didn't realize MUS doesn't follow state standards and we have to take the state test every year since we are in a charter. This year after a lot of research I decided to trying MIF. She is struggling even more this year. She seems to understand it but it is taking 2 hours a day to do the lesson. She keeps asking if she can to go back to saxon and says that program was easier for her. I was looking at saxon 5/4 and the work looks way easier and behind MIF. I don't know if I want to push her back but I feel like she is shutting down with so much math work. I'm using MM for my 3rd grade daughter and I bought the 1-6 download so I could also use that but it seems like an accelerated program also.
