  1. Let's try another one. Let's pick something the Bible is a little more clear about. Something that the Bible says God really, really hates.....divorce.

Where are those small business owners who are refusing to provide services for ....divorced people?

Hmmm wonder why that is not a big group?

Are they divorced? Their parents? Their siblings? Their children?

Perhaps it hits a little too close to home to have to deal with divorce the way the Bible would suggest?

And what about all those adulterous second marraiges? Surely they should NOT be allowed to have a wedding cake made by a very religious baker. SURELY that baker would rather shut his doors than make a cake for an adulterous second marriage! What? No? Not happening? Hmmm. Is it possible...just possible...that the anti-SSM crowd is really just anti-gay? And that it has nothing at all to do with the Bible? Or religion?

Once you start picking and choosing which parts of the Bible to follow as THE WORD OF GOD and which parts of the Bible to ignore because they are inconvenient. I think you have lost the fight.

I think this is a great point!!!

  3. Did anyone catch in the Olivia Incident part 2 video where Joe is talking to Nicole and says "we aren't doing anything wrong. Just camping on the property for a couple of months..."

No mention of homesteading, setting up anything, just this. It almost seems as if they have discussed what to say to anybody regarding conditions and he is making sure she remembers what to say. In fact, many of their conversations read like that, with Nicole 'yupping' an affirmation.

Also, does anyone know if the word 'reverent' has specific meaning (thinking more connotation here)? Joe uses it at several different times and it almost seems like a code? He uses it at the kids when he informs them they are about to be kidnapped and taken into custody, and when he tells them to get into the 'cabin' and sit at the table so they don't get Into the Olivia thing. Oh, except for Jacob, who is told to put his foot against the door in the officer's way. That poor boy! I felt like Joe purposely put him there thinking the cop would hesitate to involve the boy. Zero regard for Jacob's safety, just a pawn:(

"Reverent" is LDS-speak for being quiet and respectful (usually at church). When I am asking my children to "be reverent" at church, I am usually asking them to fold their arms and not talk during a service. Or walking down the halls, I would remind them to "be reverent" and they would take that to mean walk (not run) and use a regular voice instead of shouting. Not sure how it applies to what Joe was asking the kids to do, but reverent is used so frequently by LDS and since they at one point identified as LDS, it can't be a coincidence.

  4. Mosiah is an ancient LDS prophet from the Book of Mormon. It's weird how many people I know/have heard of who have left the Church who gave their kids LDS names. (Granted, many do not leave - my own daughter has the middle name of Sariah.)

/totally random comment that does not contribute anything of substance to the conversation

    I found that interesting too!!

  5. I'll be the voice of dissent. I had a male Shih Tzu that I got when I was young and stupid that I eventually had to rehome after he bit a couple of kids, including my toddler son, on the nose. But I will say that I was a major cause of the problem because I didn't properly socialize him as a puppy and I didn't get him neutered until he was 4. Even so, I will never get another Shih Tzu. The grooming costs alone were a major expense for me, although it was nice that he didn't shed!

ETA: he did have to have surgery to open up his nasal passages, caused by the flat face.

  6. I think the contract sounds sketchy, but she is probably correct about the market, depending on where you are looking in CO. We used to live in Aurora and still have friends there. Houses are selling in 24 hours for over asking price there.

  7. As I'm watching this story unfold, I'm seeing a lot of Christian bashing. A "let's all lump all Christians together and say they're all wrong" mindset. Here's what I've noticed. There are really two sets of Christians. Now, this isn't to say one is going to heaven and one is not. I've just noticed two different mindsets (actually a lot more, but let's stick with two for now). There are Christians who love Jesus. They love Him and their morality is an offshoot of that love. Just like I wouldn't cheat on my husband because of love and commitment, I wouldn't purposely "cheat" on Jesus - basically doing something I know would hurt our relationship. There is grace for people where they are at because we have been saved by grace while we were still sinners.

The second group is law based Christians. The mindset is this, "If I do xyz, I will be acceptable to God". You see it in Christian denominations where there are blanket rules -- you don't watch movies, women always wear dresses, you don't dance, you don't drink...basically a lot of don'ts. The Duggers / Gothard followers etc. would fall under this. For some reason, you will find sexual sin more often in these groups. So, when you notice a religious group that has a lot of rules that people must follow in order to find favor with God, you can almost expect there to be some sexual issues in those groups.

I feel sorry for his wife to be honest. Here she is - a stay at home mom- moved to DC, uprooted her life, is away from her support system, and now has no future there with a husband who will be bashed by all who see him, and a husband who is currently unemployed by both TLC and his previous job. Personally, I would want to crawl in a hole. She's a public figure who stands out with her conservative dress. It would be very hard. I also can't figure out that the Duggers didn't protect their family from becoming TV personalities. I can't fathom that they believed this scandal would remain a secret.

I'm sorry, but having grown up in a family with the first "mindset" you described, it is absolutely untrue that there is more sexual sin in the second group. Maybe it is handled differently in the firdt group, but it is there nonetheless. There is sexual sin and there is also sexual abuse by those in power in both groups. Not bashing Christians at all. I just can't let your statement go by because it is NOT TRUE.

  8. I probably would have just sent a quick email to the teacher letting her know that particular book was a non-fiction book targeted directly to teens (IMO that's different than a fiction book targeted to teens like Harry Potter). And I would talk to my child about choosing books more geared to him.

  9. Ok - let's say the kids are super happy all the time. I argue that isn't really the point. There is a reason for parents. We have to make choices that keep our kids safe, look to their future, teach them to be good adults someday. That isn't going to always make our kids happy. So if sitting in sewage, getting no education, eating rotten food, sleeping on the ground (or a pallet), having no responsibilities etc makes the kids happy, it just doesn't matter. That doesn't make their parenting decisions good. It's their job to provide education, safe food and water, and a safe home for their children even if their children don't want one.

    Good point.

  10.

    Joe:

"To know the truth about something, look at the fruit of it.... You can see how happy and healthy and well rounded and adjusted our children are. Look at the banner picture on our facebook page, there isn't a face on there that doesn't have a smile. So that's what I would say to the naysayers out there. I can go into any school system and there is a large percentage of children on ADHD and antidepressant medication and it's a pandemic of those kind of medication."

This is a bit edited, not exact quotes, I'm not that fast a typer. :) But yeah, basically, you can tell his family is fine because they have happy pictures and aren't being medicated.[/quote

Yesterday my younger sister and I were looking at family pictures taken years ago, all of us smiling and looking happy. She said, "Dad was so grouchy that day, see how in this picture he is holding my arm to keep me from squirming." I never would have noticed if she hadn't pointed it out. Now, she was three and it wasn't an abusive thing at all, but my point is we all look pretty happy in the picture because we were posing, but in reality there was tension and grumpiness. Pictures don't tell the full story, just like in the story of the college runner who appeared perfectly happy on Twitter but committed suicide that we discussed last week.

  11. This is the most disturbing comment so far. There is a movement?? That means there are more of these crazies. I was hoping their supporters were just buying the spin that they are being harassed because they are different or because they homeschool. But it sounds like there are supporters who know what kind of crazy stuff the Nauglers believe and are right there with them.

Oh yes, if you go on their facebook pages you will see all the anti-government comments from their supporters.

  12. They.... they think their home is going to be a B&B? Except that they can't figure out how to build beds? Or make a non-moldy breakfast?

I wonder if it's less of a B&B idea, and more of an "aspiring homesteaders can come out here and learn from us" concept. Which isn't really any better, I guess!

  13. Joe: "We didn't just have children because they were a product of the lovemaking we were having. We wanted to have a family. There are so many chemicals and so on that lead people to procreate..." Then he says there are problems with our society, stock markets, bail outs... Then he says they wanted to address this and so they homeschool.

He didn't have a grandfather who told him stories like other kids which gave other kids confidence.

Nicole starts answering questions and she's much more coherent. Any time Joe opens his mouth, crazy comes out.

Yes, she's much more well-spoken than he is.

  14. Now Nicole is talking about what they have on the property in terms of livestock: goats, chickens, and dogs. They plan to raise rabbits for meat and will be starting that endeavor this summer as well as planting an orchard this summer. Eventually they want to have an aviary and additional cabins where guests can stay.

  15. I know all of us are busy and squeezing in half an hour to listen to the whole thing probably isn't going to happen.... but if someone IS able to set aside the time (and make it through the interview without punching their computer), I'd love to hear a synopsis. Not that we can trust anything they say anyway, but would be interesting to hear what spin they're trying to put on this.

I've only had time to listen to the first five minutes but so far it's just Joe ranting rather incoherently about what's wrong with society.
