  1. ONe recent thread was about who buys used/ new? Many were listing which curriculum/ books they would buy used = high demand. These items might easily go for 75% or Rainbow REsource price seller pay shipping. Many other items, although new, might not be in high demand, and the shipping and multiple transactions for a buyer trying to collect multiple pieces are often not worth the headache. These items are hard to sell and have to be priced accordingly. 50% of Rainbow Resource resource buyer pay shipping. If I needed a better return, I'd try ebay.
  2. Paperbackswap has been great for about 1/3 of TOG chapter books/ Literature especially. In general used ppd has to be 50% less than Rainbow Resource, or it's just not worth the hassle/ quality. Exceptions would be items more than $50.
  3. op:since she has been on here since and ignored messages, well then, that tells you something. I've given her the benefit of the doubt for nearly three weeks. How can you tell if she's been on here? I checked the messages for ones later than your purchase and didn't see any. I hope you hear something soon or better receive the items. Was it shipped media mail? This takes 4-5 weeks for us.
  4. Like to cover 1 year of highschool spanish in junior high over 2 years about 5 hours work/ week total. Latin for children workbook, DVD lecture format is good. But we need online pronunciation drills and spelling and writing drills with audio, set up like spelling city. Maybe you could use them for the audio/ computer scored spelling, vocab, sentence writing. They're 30$/year to layout everything in order and track each individual student. An extra 15$ a year for extra practice with specific spanish that matched a workbook total 45$. Then a workbook 25$? I haven't looked for our spanish yet. :grouphug:
  5. http://www.amblesideonline.org/01sch.shtml Sonlight catalog has gentle chapter titles for early readers.
  6. We're pairing up these labs and doing some hands on some with the video. I bought the tachers manual/ worksheets/ tests for 30$ by tuying one set of video and emailing my receipts to GPB educator.
  7. OCW, MIT, Many libraries have old math texts, science texts. Look at some and then order used. We're using the free physics from Georgia Public Broadcasting.:grouphug:
  8. RDI starts at age 0 and works up with all of the nonverbals and thoughtful thinking that is the foundation to learning social skills. I could have paintakingly eeked out individual social skills for mine to use by rote, but it wasn't till we got the nonverbal foundation in place that the skills in Model Me could be applied in varying situations. :glare:And same thing for us. We were getting plenty of play, but ds wasn't "picking up" the social cues/ rules. Now that I've learned more; how could he ? Those communication channels were nonfunctioning. Nonverbal is 80% of all communication.:grouphug:
  9. http://www.montereyinstitute.org/nroc/nrocdemos.html Here's one we might use. I don't know about independent. I guess it depends on the student and the goal. There are a few virtual coops that are less than online instruction.
  10. "Hmmm? Your hair is dry." long pause 20-30 seconds giving child time to think Slowing life way down. The gist is that they just don't notice. It can be slowly taught. If we tell them what to do, we're being their EF for them instead of working that weak area of the brain. Sometimes we do to this to get them through. We become their crutch, but ultimately we want to work their EF muscles. By changing our communication to point out one or two things that they're not observing, we can give the brain a workout in that vital EF area. These are the skills RDI breaks down into tiny steps. :grouphug:
  11. I've used Interlibrary loan to get copies of Shurley English. ILL works well for items that are seen in schools. The teacher colleges like to keep copies for their students to plan with. I've also gone to some college libraries that train teachers and sat and looked at Science and Math textbooks. Homeschool groups in larger cities 100,000+? sometimes have donated curriculum that can be checked out for a short time. Sometimes I'll buy a cheap well-used older copy on a used book site. Abe's books, addall.com, paperbackswap.com There are many. This works for textbooks. Many of the most expensive items I've bought have extra websites that have given me the extra info I needed above and beyond the few pages on amazon or rainbowresource. ex. Finders keepers has extensive info on Shurley,Tapestry of Grace has 3 weeks of samples, IEW has several yahoo threads with enought files to get a better picture, singapore has a math site and an extra teacher site with whole extra practice workbooks for free. :grouphug:
  12. I've used 3 different methods and may adjust more as each child changes. Bold is the main work load 30 minutes+/day. Tb and Wb 4/5 times a week. After 4a is complete added in CWP4 one page a day or 2 of challenge problems a day 4 times a week. Needed more work in fractions and decimals and alternated days between IP and Wb. This child I would have easily overwhelmed and had to build up the amount and difficulty slowly. Wb 5 times a week. IP 3/4 times a week running about 3 sections or 2/3 of a book behind 4 review. Tb only reviews and occasionally a practice page if needed. After 4a is complete added in CWP4 one page a day or 2 of challenge problems a day 4 times a week. This child needs lost of practice, learns by physically working the problems, needs hard problems to see why a better method/ teacher instruction is needed. Tb practice and review pages only, IP 4-5 times a week, Wb reviews only and occasionaly practice pages if needed. After 4A CWP 4 about 3 times a week. This child gets bored easily and needs plenty of challenge. After 4A supplement with Khan Academy.
  13. Brighty of the Grand Canyon Little House in Prairie Secret Garden The Adventures of Paddy the Beaver There's another old classic, I can't remember the title; it's a boy coming of age in the Florida Everglades who raises a deer and has many adventures in nature.

Jan Brett also has some picture books that focus on specific biomes and activity pages on her website. These might help bring in your little ones. 15. I'm not sure if you're asking about subjects other than the 3 'rs or highschool level. Materials that have bridged large age ranges for us: IEW 2nd-8th TOG K-12th Sonlight Science DVD's PreK-3 Memorizing poems/ Bible verses/ songs together ALL Classical Kids CD's PreK-8th :grouphug:on this time in life. It was a hugely successful day if I got 10-15 minutes with preK and 1st grader each in AM and then another 20-30 min each during naptime of little one. Anything else we did together or through the noise and mayhem and interrruptions of life.
  16. I've used this with a 2nd grader with FLL 2nd grade; I've used this with a 4th grader who was using Daily grams and needed a bit more work on labeling the words in a sentence before starting Latin for Children. The best was adding each "family member's"picture and definition to the child's memory box for retention. I also ask 2nd grader to label words by colored underlining. We don't label every word but will do 2 verbs, 1 adjective, a preposition, and 1 conjunction etc. We do this on his dictation sentences several times a week. This is a nice introduction to the parts of speech and sentence types that can be adapted to other writing or grammar programs. This program made it easy to discuss adding stronger verbs, interesting adjectives, and exciting adverbs in 3rd grade to our sentences (IEW). It gave us just enough of foundation to use the parts of speech to improve and own their writing and to not flounder in Latin grammar. I'm not familiar with grammarland. Sentence family does not cover punctuation, capitalization, and many other grammar concepts that would be in a comprehensive grammar program like Shurley or Easy Grammar. Hope this helps.:grouphug:
  17. Hmm? I hear you saying you need a way to move forward just not too fast. I'm not familiar with the writing programs you mentioned. I've used IEW from 2nd grade into 7th. It will still be the main base for a few more years. Maybe there are other similar programs that allow for more flexiblity between grammar, logic, dialectic?
  18. RDI works at home and especially well with homeschooling. We did ours via skype and only made one trip to a 2 day eval.
  19. dd 12 and ds 10 both work on singapore math on their own and have for a few years while. I grade/ check each day. They correct, then we discuss problem areas if they have them. dd12 is trying out AOPS prealgebra. She works on her own each day, then we discuss what she's learned each day. I'm not teaching per se but checking each day to see if she's grabbing what she needs from each work session. ds8 works most of his math alone ( independent work). Other parts I sit beside him with blank paper and demonstrate or teach. This topic is interesting. For me it will also depend on how well I know the subject. When I'm learning it for the first time (Latin for Children), I do more teaching because I don't know what I'm looking for in evaluating their learning.
  20. We've just started in Elegant Essay (IEW). It is set up for a class. It has thesis development and using different types of support in paragraphs. Wish I could eval more. We're just starting.
  21. Breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Breakfast: Oatmeal + Omelet LUnch: salad + left over beef Dinner:Kids: deli pizza, parents stir fry/ frozen What are your plans today? School, grocery, errands, try paper mache with kids for the first time. Roman helmets are in order. Any one want to dig in? Are there any signs of spring where you are? It's 80 F and the air is full of dust. I shut the windows and ran the air conditioner to filter out the pollen. I'm ready for Fall.
  22. Hmm? I think I hear you saying you need a safe place for ds to quiet himself? An entryway, hallway, + large comforter or 2 large pillows. I'm typing and can't see his age right now. It sounds like right now your building a new habit: beds are only for sleeping on. Habits probably take 6 weeks +; hang in there if you want the bedroom to be sleeping only. ONe large family near us uses bedrooms only for sleeping. They have a large family. Bedrooms are full of bunk beds. All of the toys and clothing are in the garage in shelfs, bins, and racks. The kids bring in a box or bin at a time then return it. One thing that's helped mine was jumping on the mattresses on the floor during an exercise time. A neighbor gave us a minitrampoline. This works great for ds when needing to calm down. :grouphug:
