heart'sjoy replied to heart'sjoy's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
This is what dd wanted to know. She wanted to know what to work towards. -
which tests (SAT, SAT 2, ACT, CLEP, AP) will have hand written portions on them? Are College entrance essays and scholarship essays handwritten? Let's see why we're at it what about essays on college exams, are they still hand written? Many thanks.

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/323685/Office-Depot-Brand-Dual-Ruled-Marble/ or http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/320155/Office-Depot-Brand-Marble-Quad-Composition/ We've used the one directly above. I have the child draw a horizontal line across a two page spread and work on the left side. We use the left side to rework if needed and add insights gained.

I felt I had to regroup multiple times a day. In order to regroup I had to narrow my top priorities. Things that helped. -Pick one or two things to work on everyday or even twice a day in little 5-10 minute blocks. Usually reading, writing,or math. -School year round taking only 2-3 week breaks where needed. Usually holidays or family visits. This made the missed school due to unavoidables negligible and lowered my stress level tremendously. -Make working side by side on chores, dishes, sorting laundry, a daily skill. I did some of this. I pushed too hard to make them independent in chores rather than enjoying doing it together. -When starting school back after more than 3 days off, we would start at 1/2 to 1/3 pace and build back up. I kept reminding myself, I'm training habits of self discipline that will last longer and have longer lasting results than any knowledge I can pour into them. :grouphug: and :grouphug: By working on the basics for several years, having a goal like TWTM method in sight, and adding in baby steps as God allows, we've come a lot further than I would have ever imagined.

How easy to use Tapestry of Grace as secular curriculum?
heart'sjoy replied to umsami's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Most of the Bible teaching and church history is directed toward the teacher in the early years. TOG yr 1 might be harder. It sets Old testament of the Bible against the history backdrop of ancient Egypt and Babylonia. There is extra time set aside for discussing things like God's plan to save his people in the ark, and again with Moses and how all of this is preparing for Jesus to save physically like the ark and legally like the law. You could shorten YR 1 by leaving out these weeks or substitute and have time to study more in depth the history behind your beliefs. In Dialectic and Rhetoric TOG is geared to forming a Biblical worldview of history and our modern world. Consequently history , philosophy, government, and literature are frequently discussed from how would someone relate this to the Bible and how would I personally relate to my world believing God has a plan to save his people. It is literally intertwined like a tapestry. Using the historical sequence could be done easily. Removing a worldview and inserting another at the Rhetoric level would be time consuming. Hope this helps. -
http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=346710&highlight=timeline There's many timeline threads and many options. Here's what worked for us: With TOG and under age 10, the unit celebrations were photographed along with hands on projects and placed in page protectors. These pictures along with 2-3 best narations or writings go in a permanent History portfolio. The kids have remembered periods of time by the crafts and celebrations. They would hear a story and say that fits before kings and queens. Mom what comes after the Colonial period? Then about age 10 we started a more detailed timeline with HSITW Book of Time. The figures could easily be used to decorate narations or written assignments.

Choosing a curriculum for a Kindergatener with Autism
heart'sjoy replied to a topic in The Learning Challenges Board
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for. The yahoo group for RDI might have some more ideas. Another thought, a more important question might be how to guide a nonverbal child to make them hungry to interact with you. If your child is tuning you out or in their own world so much that it's hampering their relational growth, you would get bigger dividends for your time and effort by reestablishing a guiding relationship with the child through something like RDI. When this relationship is functioning, you can teach your child. Without it our kids are left to learn from scratch. We grow exponentially by observing and learning from those around us. When our ASD kids are not tuned in to us and their world, not only can they not keep up but the gap widens. I can't express the victory when my child started turning to me to see what I thought about how a spelling word was written (age 9), questioning me with a nonverbal look. I know this quick questioning glance is nothing to most people. I didn't know it was missing. It was one of many developmental steps my child was missing. I now have a child hungry to be guided. For us it looked like The Horse Whisperer.- 3 replies

I'm not sure if this is what you were thinking of. RDI is tiny developmental steps of everything human/ relational/ communication. It's even used for attachment disorders. Or even highly gifted children who are so focused on other things they're missing out on relational growth. Where I could see RDI helping, is by creating a pathway for small daily success starting at home with you. RDI is not emotional therapy and would not replace help with depression. Depending on the level of depression, it might be absolutely necessary to treat from two directions or even three. Amazon has The RDI Book and 2 other books with RDI activities. My experience is limited to one child who has benefited from RDI. :grouphug:I was at loss when I heard similar comments from my child.

It's really a wake up call when you see how much help our children need in the more fluid environments. It started "jelling" for my husband when he read some of the more scientific research as to the foundational skills ASD and NVLD kids were missing. It was literally the iceberg under the water we couldn't quite put our finger on. WE finally "got" why normal parenting and instructing wasn't working when it worked with the rest of our kids. We're still learning a lot here, but I'm glad RDI opened the door to see what specific skills my child was missing and a way to start plugging mu child back in. :grouphug:

Is there any way to get a discount with IEW?
heart'sjoy replied to Dianne-TX's topic in General Education Discussion Board
IEW yahoo group join this first. Then you can ask to join the buy and sell IEW group. -
I totally remember the feeling. I would set everything up and something would come up. It was exasperating. It might take me three tries to get in 30 minutes. I also had two other younger kids. It was worth every minute. I'm a "Give me the overall picture first, then the fine points" person. Watching the teacher actually teach the kids with my 9 year old worked best. The best was seeing what the teacher was actually expecting from the kids. I also got an idea of how long each step would take. I think it took me a month to get through the younger kid's being taught videos and the teacher lessons for the first few units. It had been so worth it.

I am looking for the most efficient programs....
heart'sjoy replied to Mommyfaithe's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Using a flexible writing curriculum that requires the student to use grammar skills in spicing up their sentences by varying the sentence structure and including power words by class, can cover just about everything other than math. If I could only keep one curriculum besides a math, it would be IEW. I can make it work for us in so many subject areas. This is a good reminder to me to make writing across the curriculum a top priority before I go trying to squeeze in more frills. I've drooled over some of the more interesting grammar and writing curriculums. Oh yes, and those beautiful lap books from homeschool in the woods. They would be so much FUN. Efficient and Effective wins out here most of the time. This doesn't mean boring textbood dry though. Hands on activities that require my kids to cooperate, negotiate, and plan together are fun and meet some social skills goals to boot. LOve hearing these ideas. -
We're entering JH and will look at some molecules using Friendly Chemistry. Then we're planning for a harder chemistry in highschool. I would say I have both visual and kinesthetic learners. Do we even need a set for modeling? If we get a set now, is there a particular set that would be easy to add on to for organic molecules? What type of set would get us all the way through AP chemistry? Any other advice?

Timeline starts at 5000 B.C. There is a quotation in light grey italic about size 10 font per two page spread. Some of the quotes are Bible verses and many are famous people. The quotes match up with the time period page they are on. Most of the Bible quotes are in B.C. Hope this helps.

Writing Curric. Options for Upper Elementary?
heart'sjoy replied to shukriyya's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
The IEW yahoo group has a quite a few files to use. This helped me decide how much "help" I needed. There are quite a few threads about IEW and just using the theme based choices. The TWSS gave me the whole picture I needed. I needed a lot of guidance and think whole to part. -
My kids really like knowing that they're done (Mom can't go on and on about this and that) reworking a paper when we've completed the checklist for style and their own editing list. Just using the TWSS + teacher DVD's here. But IEW works for us because I can adapt it to our history or science without buying more.

snap circuits for older kids?
heart'sjoy replied to Changed's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Student Guide for Electronic Snap Circuits 8,10,12 all use snap circuits. But the 10 and 12 use the guide for their science this semester with free videos from Georgia Public Broadcasting in their physics classes. The guide as all of the "why" and compares different circuits to learn what the different components do in a circuit. I'm eyeballing the "green" set next that adds to snap circuits. Happy Hunting. -
DH have discussed this. Moving to a higher COL = a pay cut for us and a significant one as our COL is less than 76. I there a way to calculate how much you need to make to maintain your standard of living when moving to an area with a different COL?

We switched form FIAR to TOG at first grade. I needed more structure and something all three kids could do for history together. K-2 is mostly read to my kids, some mapwork, and lots of hands on projects. There are other programs that are cheaper and just as good as TOG. The deciding factor for me was I could learn at the rhetoric level by reading the teacher notes and a few history titles at the dialectic or rhetoric level all while I was teaching at the lower grammar. Besides all three kids being together for history and being able to reuse it 10-12 times. Layout: The threads page is key. It clues you in as to what your child should gain each week. Next is the reading list far left column for K. Then there are a few Lower grammar pages for vocabulary, mapwork, hands-on ideas, and a literature worksheet.
