  1. I keep wondering the same thing. I get so confused when I look at BW - I have two kids (K and 2nd) that have done little to no writing and would love to build on that a little more. But where to start?

I'm right there with you. I've looked over the site countless times and can never seem to figure it out!!

  2. My goals this year are extremely humbling for me. For the first time ever, I am actually being realistic and not kidding myself as to what I can do. I am breastfeeding on demand a very large and equally hungry baby for the majority of this coming school year so I'm scaling back to the basics and strewing the rest.

I'm also including daily walks or swimming and family quiet time so we can all recharge.

That's it!!! Not putting pressure on myself for anything else!!

  3. Huge improvement in quality of life for dh!! Last spring he was on zyrtec, benadryl, an acid reducer, an eye drop, and two different nasal sprays. And he'd wear a respirator every time he had to work outdoors. This year one nasal spray daily, that's it!!!

His allergist is in the big city an hour away but they courier his vials to his pcp's office here in our small town so its a five min drive. Otherwise it just wouldn't be feasible.

  4. That is obnoxious. I am so sorry.

My neighbor currently has her home on the market. Yesterday some potential buyers came with their dogs to the showing to see if the dogs would like the house. (without prior notice or approval)

That would have major consequences here. Our house is currently listed and if my son was unknowingly exposed to dog hair after a showing like that his face and hands would get huge welts and his eyes would swell and close up! I'd be so mad if that happened to us!!!

  5. Improvements to ILL. I need to be able to predict when my ILL requests will be available for pick up. There have been so many books that go with our lessons that were available through ILL but it took forever and we were way beyond that topic by the time they came in.

So say ILLs are delivered on Mondays, expect your reservation to process in 7 business days. So if am picking up on Monday then I place that weeks requests 2 Fridays prior. Something like that so I know when to request to have the right material for the current lessons.

I agree with pp about stocking non consumable homeschooling materials. STOW, Life of Fred, IEWs TWSS and more books on home education. My library has TWTM, A Charlotte Mason Companion, and The Everything Homeschooling Book and that's it! The rest is test prep resources.

  6. Kansas City! Lots to do for free. Kaleidoscope for the 5-12 crowd, Harley Davidson tour for the 12+ crowd. Federal Reserve Money Museum tour. Last I checked, there were activities to download from the website. All those are free plus lots more. You could probably find Royal tickets inexpensively and KC has awesome BBQ!!

  7. My arsty girl likes doing History Pockets and piles up on the couch with blankets, popcorn and drawing supplies to watch Planet Earth, Wild Kratts or Magic School Bus.

She also does a cooking class but if you are pressed for time, you might just have her help in the kitchen when you're cooking/ baking anyway and incorporate practical application of math and science.

Your short and sweet then art plan sounds good too!

  8. Ds will be 4 is summer, beating our district's cutoff by 22 days. So he would be very young if he went to PS prek this year. But, he seems scary smart like his dad so we are rolling with it. Here is my plan for him for now. I'm sure something will change.

    -Ambleside year 0 booklist

    -Wee Folk Art seasons curriculum

    -Saxon K math

He's welcome to follow along with big sis whenever he likes. Plus waaaay more reading than just the booklist. He brings me books to read him every 20 minutes some days!

  9. My first grader really enjoyed G is for Googol. I picked it up from the library but just now when I went to the Amazon page to link this I saw it says you can download an instructor's guide.I read it to her and went over some of the concepts. It gave her a broad overview of some of the fun things about math. DS really liked it as well, but he read it himself. I think kids like to see possibilities. Highly recommended.

Added to my rapidly growing amazon wish list! Thanks!

  10. You can ply her with math "story books" by borrowing from the library. You might have to use ILL/Link+ for some books.

There is a long list of living math books at http://www.livingmath.net/ReaderLists/tabid/268/Default.aspx

My kids had like the Young Math books series, The Number Devil book, Sir Circumference books series

For puzzles, you could print out free samples from Penny Dell puzzles for Sudoku, Ken Ken, Logic and Math https://www.pennydellpuzzles.com/free_puzzles/default.aspx

Thanks for the links! I will check these out. We get the Stuart J Murphy math storybooks at the library but that's all they have. Since I already own her main math curriculum for the upcoming year, maybe I can use some funds to collect some books. The Sir Cumference books look fun.

  11. Well reading this thread has been incredibly depressing.

So, for a homeschooling parent like me, that slipped through the cracks and is terrible at math, what is there to do? Read the books recommended here and maybe work a math curriculum myself a year ahead of dd? She has a lot of potential. She is great at patterns and logic. She is teaching herself multiplication from who knows where? She just blurts them out randomly and is always right. I think she "sees" math in a way I never have.

After reading here, I am worried I'm going to fail her!

  12. Very much so. I haven't sought treatment. It started in adulthood. My mom used to get panicky in small spaces and make a big scene, which was so embarrassing. Now I understand how real it is. That said, I have managed to not be dramatic about it so far. I talk myself through it in my head.

I actually prefer being in an elevator with at least 1 other person. Alone, trapped in an elevator? No thanks, I'll take the stairs. I don't do well in tents, tunnels or caves. Don't like my face covered or having warm air blowing on my face in the car. Never had an MRI, but just reading the above comments on them, I am hoping I never need one.

I don't like the car for long periods of time and really don't like roller coasters but due to motion sickness. I wonder if the two are connected...
