yay! My last kid is just 10, so I'm very much looking forward to a 7 year break after doing this 3 times in 5 years. Having three BABIES in 5 years is also pretty taxing, so I probably should have seen this coming back then 😂

all my kids are 2 years apart... and there are (9) of them! ACK!!!!!!! i'm only on kid #3!

DS got into his ED school.

We homeschooled K-12, and you people are among the few who can truly understand how unbelievably relieved I feel right now.

We homeschooled K-12 also and when my oldest DS got into his ED school... I agree, it was such a relief and such a validation of everything we as homeschool parents have done. Congrats!!!

  3. We did Rightstart A-E without too much of a hitch... then we switch to Singapore 4B, 5A, 5B (1 year) which helps cover some topics not overly present in RS. Singapore went pretty fast so you can cruise through these quickly if you're backtracking. One of my kids did 6A as well in this time and completed that in under a month.... Then my kids were ready for a Pre-Algebra program. We switched to Dolciani Pre-Algebra.

  4. Very old thread. Hoping to revive as there was some great information regarding RS1 & 2 editions.

We are longtime users of RS1 (oldest 2 are in college). We have youngers in RS-B & RS-C

One student is struggling and we're having to take a 2nd pass. Thinking since her younger sibling is about to pass her to buy her RS-B2 so she'll feel like she's doing her 'own' book.

Will it be possible to do RS-B2 and then move onto RS-C1 or will I need to buy RS-C, RS-D & RS-E 2nd edition to continue on the pathway? I hate to invest in the all new 2nd edition but if it's better, I'll consider it.

Also to note, this child is a twin whose sister is doing RS-C1 - so would likely continue with RS-C1 for her as RS-A1 - RS-E1 has worked for all the kids....

Congratulations! My 11th grader is gearing up for the application process.  Just curious if the southern schools are the big money NMF schools?

We applied to the Southern schools b/c we're originally from the South so have an affinity for it... UofAlabama is known for full-rides for NMF and even high ACT/SAT. LSU also says they have good scholarships... we found, in practice, UofAlabama/LSU/UofSouthCarolina not so great with the award money. UNC Chapel Hill was nearly a full ride. Haven't got all the award pkgs yet... but she wants to stay in state anyway.

  7. My dd#2 applied REA to Stanford and just found out Wednesday she was accepted!!! Can't even believe it. We're all still in absolute shock. So incredibly excited!!! She still has a bunch of RD applications in - so waiting on word on those in the spring too. 😄 Will keep y'all posted.

  8. This has been asked a million times, I know. And I've read most all the responses... But what sayeth the Hive now? What is your advice?

Most schools my dd is applying to ask for 2 TEACHER LORs. Most offer an OTHER recommender as optional. She has her 1st Teacher Recommendation -but we are struggling to figure out a 2nd one - as all her classes are at home or outsourced, so no one knows her in person. I know she can have 2 from distance-learner teachers, but they can't really speak to her character. We've already got one of those. CAN we use a non-academic recommender for the 2nd spot??

Otherwise she'll be sending 3 - as the TEACHER LOR don't know her personally. So we feel she has to have at least 1 recommender who knows her well. So instead of having 3 (2 meh, 1 good) when they only require 2, can we just send 1 teacher + 1 other - and slot them both into the teacher recommenders in the common app?

    What are your thoughts?

  9. Figuring out what to do for my 7th grader. (I'll cross-post this in High School too)

She'll finish Dolciani Pre-A by Christmas break. She won't start Algebra I until Fall (outsourced with Myhomeschoolmathclass - Jan in TX). So I have a semester to do what... ? She definitely needs reinforcement as math does not come naturally and we tirelessly work through Pre-A together - it doesn't come super easily. We are looking forward to this 'bonus' time to reinforce.

Should I find another Pre-A to go through for the remainder of the year? If yes, ideas?

Or should I start an Algebra program (could be Dolciani's Algebra) so she'll have a solid 1-1/2 years of Algebra under her belt?

Ideas? All my other older kids finished Pre-A at end of year, transitioning to Alg following year - so this 1/2 year finish is new territory for us.

    Thanks!

  11. I've seen this bandied about a number of times but as it didn't apply to me, I really didn't read much into it... now my oldest will be coming home from college for holiday break.

After living independently for many months.... staying out late, setting their own schedule, being independent..... How is coming home again where "community living" with parents and siblings is very different than campus living, where we abide by different rules that independent adult ds has not had to partake in since summer?

Love to hear how it went for you and yours over the years...

TI-83 Plus just as good as TI-84 Plus? We don't use calculators regularly anyway, it will all be Greek to us, or maybe Reverse Polish. Not paying full price sounds good to me, especially for something that we will teach and practice for the test (and calculus background)

Thanks, all! Searching on "PSAT calculator" was giving me score ranges and manipulations.@Lanny
thanks for the link to College Board.

i was told by derek owens (regarding his math/physics classes) that all versions of the TI-83 and TI-84 have basically the same functionality and that either will get a typical student through all of high school and college math. So I'm going with that.
