We never bothered to visit either after the curt email response. Now, I am wondering about other colleges that require SAT IIs. Maybe we should have applied to a few others we had on our radar. In the long run, it probably doesn't matter because we cannot come close to meeting our EFC. She's strong enough to get into most schools but not strong enough for full tuition at most, which is what we need. Sigh.

Just FYI...in a last minute panic to get a few more applications out, my daughter applied to Rhodes College before we remembered that they require several SAT Subject Tests which she had not taken. We contacted admissions to inquire if they were absolutely necessary given she was dual enrolled. There reply was yes, no exceptions. Therefore, we never even submitted her ACT scores. She just received notification that she was admitted with a merit scholarship!????

Honestly, I think Sewanee is falling down to the bottom of her list for fit reasons and would probably be unaffordable for us anyway. It's a lovely school though. Furman is her top choice, but also likely will be unaffordable even with the generous merit aid she received. She was not invited to the full tuition/full ride scholarship competition. :( Centre is more affordable, and she was invited to apply for one of their full tuition scholarships. It will be early to mid-April before we get that decision. Her other top contenders are UGA and UA-H, both of which are completely different than the above schools, but are also completely affordable with automatic full tuition scholarships.

DD received her acceptance to Centre College today. We are eagerly awaiting the financial aid package from her top choice school next week and praying that she gets enough aid to make it doable. If not, it will be a long three months before she can decide.

Thank you for your input everyone. At the last minute, DD's advisor was able to get her into an honors Political Science class that was already filled but that worked with her schedule. That puts her back at 17 credit hours, so I don't think any of her colleges will worry about just dropping Greek. As Maria T suggested, I will just include a letter of explanation with her final transcript.

None of the colleges she will attend next year accept CLEP credit. AP self-study might be an option. The Psych course is not a requirement for high school graduation or college admittance. We originally chose the Psych class because her top choice school is known to have a GPA killer Intro to Psych course (and she will have to take the course at some point for her intended major), but psych specifically isn't needed right now. Just wondering how colleges will view dropping two classes?

DD has been accepted to several colleges, but we are awaiting financial aid awards to make the final decision on where she will attend. She is dual enrolled at our local university. When she applied to schools, she had to list her courses for her senior year. For second semester that included the following: Calculus Honors Chem w/lab French 2002 French 3001 Intro to Psychology Greek 3 (through Lukeion, not dual-enrolled) She's also a TA/SI Leader for Intro French classes, so she has to sit in on another French class as well and works 10 hours/week overall on campus. She had to give up Greek 3 this semester due to an unavoidable schedule conflict with her DE classes. I feel confident that dropping Greek is not a deal breaker. However, yesterday she dropped the Psych class because it was too easy. The professor stated that the class would be a lot of busy work and, in fact, the first homework assignment was a crossword puzzle. Unfortunately, there are no good options for adding a replacement class that work with her schedule. How likely is she to have her college acceptances rescinded if she does not replace the psych class? She will still be taking 14 hours and will have met all of her high school requirements for graduation. The only other option is to take an Ethics class that has horrible reviews on ratemyprofessor. Would it be best to suck it up and take that class even if she's likely to get a B in the class?

Exactly. My husband works on 100% commission and is not reimbursed by his company for any of his expenses, which are significant. He has to spend part of his income to make sales. This.is.terrible.

You're not alone. Dd has already been accepted into her top choice school, but we'll have to wait until at least February to see if it is affordable. She also has a few financial safety acceptances although they aren't ideal in several respects, so she's still applying to a few other places. To complicate matters, it seems our financial aid situation is not as straightforward as I thought, and all schools will be significantly more expensive than I expected or they may not if given "professional judgement." At this point, I don't think we'll be able to decide until late April. Sigh.

Pegasus, when you say, "schools often add back in the business expenses that the families are able to deduct from taxable income," do you mean the schools increase aid from the npc estimate based on the lower actual income? I think that is what you are saying, which gives me some hope.

Does anyone have experience with this situation? Our taxable income is $43,000 less than our AGI. Basically, we have a lot of out-of-pocket expenses required to create our income. The npc's do not seem to take this into account. Our estimated coa is based on our AGI which is significantly more than our actual earnings after expenses. Will schools take this into account?

My Dd earned a 4.0 in her first semester of dual enrollment. Honors Chem, Honors World Lit, Intermediate French, and Pre-Calc. In retrosoect, she should not have taken pre-calc. She made an A in her pre-calc class last year, but in order to qualify for state funding for the DE, she had to save Calc until spring semester because it was the only class left that she needed to graduate high school (4th year of math). We should have used the credit hours for a Gen Ed requirement, but we went with what the adviser suggested. Lessons learned. Dd was invited to take a 3000-level French class next semester skipping the pre-req (the placement test underrated her level) and was also asked to be a French SI (supplemental instruction) instructor next semester. It is a paid position with office and planning hours. She also made the highest score in her class on the ACS Chem test. Hoping next semester goes as well and the senioritis does not hit!

Dd received news that she was admitted to her first choice school today - Furman University. We won't know if we can actually afford it for a few more months though, but she's well aware of that. She has also been admitted to Berry College, University of Alabama Huntsville, University of West Georgia Honors College, and Centenary College of Louisiana. Still more apps out there that do not notify until mid-January or later and she may yet apply to a few more. Thanks to all of you on this board as I have gleaned so much over the past few years from those of you that have shared your experiences.

My mother was an RN. She worked in a hospital as a nurse for 20 years, but came to dislike the work as she is not much of "a people person". For the second half of her career, she worked for medical insurance companies in various positions as a nurse. For instance, she determined if procedures were medically necessary, worked in fraud investigations, etc. Those positions pay well. Also, what about medical transcription?

I am sad to hear that about Furman too. It's my DDs top choice right now. Hmmm...

My DD took a few classes at her co-op that were AP/Honors - the student could choose to complete work at either level. She complete the AP track of the classes, but didn't take the AP tests (I know, I know!). Anyway, would it be better to list the classes as Honors or AP without the tests? She will be applying to moderately selective schools, but not highly selective. She will also have 30 Dual Enrollment hours from our local university's honor college, if that makes a difference.

Allison TX - did you receive a response to your e-mail? Has your son's score been posted yet? My daughter also took the September 10 test and her score has not posted yet either. She took the test in a different state because we were on vacation at the time, so I'm a little worried that could be causing the delay.
