  1. DH played football and is also a fan. I just asked him, and he says he actually SEES the ball on the field perhaps 50% of the time, but he knows where the ball is 95-99% of the time, due to action on the field. I don't care for football, because I do have trouble seeing the ball, and I can't intuit what is happening just by watching the plays.
  2. There are other jobs out there for teens. I would advise them to give two weeks' notice.
  3. I like the Sketchers Go Walk pants. You can find them on Amazon in several different styles -- capri, leggings, flared, etc. -- but I just wear the regular pants style. They are nowhere as clingy on me as the photos show them on the model, and they are very comfy. And they have pockets.
  4. Yes. I have a membership, but DH is my second person, and they only allow two on the account. So I asked about and bought a Shop Card for DD to use. They said that you can get in the door by flashing a Shop Card and can use it without a membership. But when the card is used up, they won't give it back, because they don't want people to use it for entry when it's empty.
  5. I'm sorry that this is so scary. I'm glad that the doctors are working hard to figure this out now, and I'm praying that they are able to start you on an effective treatment very soon.
  6. This is a timely thread, because DD21 is off campus for the first time. She has friends and a boyfriend who eat on campus sometimes, so we did buy her the commuter dining package, but we will evaluate after this semester whether she used it enough for it to be worthwhile, or whether it would be cheaper to pay cash as she goes. I think she said that it's $7.50 per meal in cash. They just opened a Costco in her college town, so I gave her a $100 Shop Card and sent her with some things for an initial pantry stock up. We are still deciding how much to give her each month and whether to just transfer money to her account or perhaps give her some grocery store gift cards. We will see how the first month goes and then figure out a budget. She does have a job, and so we don't want to fund endless Starbucks and fast food runs, so there will be some things that she will need to cover for herself.
  7. https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1126985086 Scorpions are everywhere! Who knew?
  8. I'm so sorry. Poor Andrew! And so stressful for all of you.
  9. In our state, a person does not have to be on government disability (I assume you mean SSI) BEFORE getting assistance from vocational rehab. My son has had years of help from vocational rehab already but has not applied for SSI yet. Each state is different. The mom should check what the rules are there. Also, because he is a legal adult, she can help him fill out applications for these things, but he has to be willing to do it for himself. The willingness can be a big stumbling block, and if he tells vocational rehab that he doesn't want their help, they won't help him against his will. He may need to learn more first about the kinds of things they can do for him.
  10. I am thinking of and praying for you often. I hope the biopsy leads to very effective treatment beginning soon.
  11. Warning -- spoiler alert Firekeeper's Daughter has a sexual assault scene.
  12. Praying. Hugs, Melissa. Wish we all could help somehow.
  13. Melissa, I'm so sorry. I'll be praying for you.
  14. Does anyone have experience with this? DS18 has his foot surgery scheduled for next Thursday.
  15. I had a similar thing happen. I was offered my mother and grandmother's recipe boxes once when my parents were moving, but I turned them down, because I had four tiny kids and just couldn't deal with one more thing. It was a big box with several large recipe collections inside it. YEARS later, I regretted it and happened to ask at a family Christmas gathering if my sister or SIL knew what had happened to them. Unbelievably, SIL actually had them in the trunk of her car. She didn't know what to do with them and had brought them that day to see if one of us wanted them! I am so glad that you found the journal.
  16. When we were looking to move into this school district, we targeted some neighborhoods that we might like to live in, and I would drive slowly down the streets, looking at the homes to get a sense of the area. I would visit some neighborhoods multiple times. Maybe I seemed suspicious? But I was not nefarious. It is good to be cautious, though.
  17. I'm so sorry. I forget -- does he have problems with his other eye, as well?
  18. I got a ceramic pan for the first time ever, and it is awesome for eggs. They slide right out and don't leave residue behind.
  19. I can't see things in my head, either. Like Maize, I have a concept of things like an apple in my brain. I can get a fleeting, fuzzy kind of memory when I think of an apple -- or specific people -- so I know HOW they look. I just can't conjure up a picture of it -- or a person -- and hold it in my thoughts. I am an excellent speller on paper but cannot spell as well aloud, because I have no picture of the letters or words in my head, even after I say them out loud. I am terrible with directions and get lost easily. I discovered that I may not recognize a stretch of highway, even if I drive it regularly, if I get on it from a different exit. I'm sure this is related to having a non visual brain.
  20. We have two on ADHD meds who also have anxiety and depression, and the ADHD meds have not increased anxiety here. I think it will vary by individual and may be something that just has to be tried to know for sure. The good thing is that ADHD medications have a very short half life and leave the body very quickly, so a brief trial is possible (though it needs to be long enough to give the meds a chance, because sometimes it takes a bit to understand the effects). I have seen some comments that anxiety can increase for some people when the ADHD medication helps the brain focus more, and that focus makes the person more aware of things or details to worry about. But it's not like that for everyone.
  21. The other responses are great, I think. One of my kids is like this, and his anxiety diagnosis qualified him for a 504 plan at school, to give him extra time when his brain would freeze. He did seem to grow out of it and the need for his 504. If the new environment will be a brick and mortar school, this person might look into a 504 plan that would give them extra time on tests and assignments and the accommodation of taking breaks as needed.
  22. The other advice is good, I think! My five year old goldendoodle still doesn't like the rolling trash can, but she reacts just by moving further away from it and doesn't jump up or anything.
  23. Kitchen layouts can be challenging, even if you have plenty of space otherwise. I wouldn't want appliances sitting on my island all of the time. I think the easiest fix is to separate your prep time at the sink from your work time at the island. Set aside a time to do all of the washing of produce, etc., at the sink as one task that you do, separate from your cooking time, so that you don't have to swivel as often. I also swivel to my sink often to wash my hands or wash off a knife or cutting board while I'm cooking. If you find you do this, the over the sink cutting board idea would be great. I'm sorry you are having this struggle. I actually dislike kitchen plans where the sink is in the island, personally, but in your situation that would be ideal, and I'm sorry you don't have it.
