  1. I'm open to vintage books for sure. I really want to do CLE Grade 1 for the built in drill and number sense but not thrilled about paying for the light units for all my children.
  2. Oooh, I really like the look of FAN. Which specific books would you recommend? I was looking at "I Excel", "Process Skills", and "Math Express". How does it compare to Singapore's CWP books? It seems cheaper, so that's already a plus.
  3. I really like their phonogram app for IOS. This is another app that has helped tremendously too. I cannot say enough good things about it. All of that company's apps are fantastic. If there is any such thing as a twaddle-free app that truly teaches and doesn't simply offer mind-numbing entertainment with a little learning thrown in, then these fit the bill. http://lescapadou.com/LEscapadou_-_Fun_and_Educational_applications_for_iPad_and_IPhone/Montessori_Crosswords.html
  4. I went ahead and ordered it in time for the sale price! It's going to be a Christmas present - a little like getting socks but oh well
  5. Are there any spiral Asian or at least conceptual math programs or is that sort of an oxymoron? I would settle for a mastery conceptual program with built in review.
  6. Perhaps I'm a little crazy but is there anyone out there that uses BJU worktexts w/o the TM. I'm thinking of using the RS methods of teaching math that I learned from that program to do the hands on teaching, and then having my child do the BJU worktext. He loves colorful workbooks, and I really like the look of BJU's new math workbooks. They seem to hit on a concept multiple ways in one lesson. We are already using MEP, but my son wants more color.
  7. Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply. I think I'm going to go for it and buy it!
  8. Maybe application was the wrong word. I saw this in the Sample of Reader 1 Lesson 16, "Do we want to read what God says? Yes we do." At least at that 1st grade level there is some teaching. So If I'm understanding you right, that kind of thing ends once 2nd grade hits? For the readers grade 2 and up, are the stories the same as the ones in Bible Studies to read? If my child can read Bible stories to read to himself, will there be any benefit to him reading the Bible Nurture series grade 2 and up? We would not be doing any workbooks, just using them as readers. I just don't want to invest the money if the content can be obtained from the books we already have.
  9. Has anyone compiled a list of math curricula written to the student. I don't mind scripted programs, as long as the script can be read out loud to the student, speaking to that student. Does that make sense?
  10. THanks so much for your help! My son is a fine writer, but the reading lags. Funny how they are all different! He has ADHD, which I think makes it hard for him to focus on reading alone. I'm thinking I might need to get his eyes tested as well for visual tracking issues.
  11. Question for R&S users. We already own Rod and Staff's Bible Stories to Read. I'm trying to decide if I want to purchase the Rod and Staff Bible Nurture Series readers. I am using a separate language arts program and would only use them for Bible study/reinforcement. Are the stories the same? Or do the readers cover more or get more into application, etc? The readers were published in 1985, and the Bible Stories to Read book in 89, so it may be the same author.
  12. I have a question for those who use Blend Phonics, which I am loving for my son BTW. We are using Blend Phonics lite, vowels in red. I know it says it's for first grade and it's meant to be taught by dictation, but I just let him read the words on the tablet. After we have completed all the sections, and he can read all the words fluently, what reading grade level would he be on? I'm curious what he would be able to read at that point in terms of early readers. He has a high vocabulary; it's just his reading that is lagging behind.
  13. Not sure. I for one am extremely excited about them...but i'm admittedly a nerd and I have a love of vintage things.
  14. Wow. Tha'ts super helpful. I'm looking at 2nd grade science only.
  15. For those of you who have tried BJU online, can you tell me if there is a video for every school day? Also, how long are the videos per course. I'm trying to figure out the total hours.
  16. I read the online samples. The only reason I'm wanting to buy the readers is that I like the content. Pathways is sweet but not quite what I'm looking for... I guess I'll just buy the first reader without the guide and see how it goes. If I need it, I can always buy the TM.
  17. Thank you. I know I'm not going to do the workbook. Just want to use it as readers. Does the Teacher's Manual show all the new words in each reader? Does the reader already do that?
  18. We are doing a separate, thorough phonincs and language arts program. I want to purchase Rod and Staff's Grade 1 Bible Nurture Readers. I know that they are largely sight word based, which is not a problem for me. I'm a fan of controlled readers. I like for my child to know how to read/spell every word in a reader before approaching the text. Do the readers list every single new word in the story at the end of the story, so that I can cover them during spelling dictation before having the child read the story? Does the Teacher's Manual do that? I'm trying to avoid the TM if I don't need it because we are not purchasing any other component of the program except the readers. Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help.
  19. Nevermind. Just found out it is marketed only to teachers. You have to have an institutional account to purchase it. Bummer.
  20. It's this: http://www.hmhco.com/shop /education-curriculum/math/math-in-focus-singapore-math
  21. Has anyone tried Math in Focus' computer program, Digi+? Will it work as a stand alone supplement or do I need to have the MIF materials to teach it first?
  22. I doubt it based on my one book, Apples. I love it as a supplement.
  23. What is the closest thing to Mystery of History for American history? I also want some audio CD's.
  24. I am trying to decide whether I should get the download or the CD. Does anyone have the download and wish they had bought the CD?
