More than I want too :) I am also a school social worker :) happy to help anyone! To the OP, girls on the spectrum are still not really understood I feel, also for many GT aspies (boys and girls) they get stuck in the rut of things being too easy or too hard..finding the just right fit is hard! We have a unique situation right now, we are still technically enrolled in public school but our IEP is for online school at home. We have hired advocates etc. I became even more well versed in the law after dealing with the school system through middle school... She is a freshman now

I know a lot of you don't use textbooks for literature but I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation. Thanks
-
Thanks everyone... So it is the pace and depth that make it more challenging? The depth I know she would love, not sure about the pace although she has self taught geometry already this year so she loves to move quickly...

Are there good reasons for having to take regular bio before AP bio? Redundancy drives my dd crazy...she would rather learn new info than have things be repeated.... Have no knowledge in this area so thought I would ask...

Maybe look at Perfection Learning and their Alternative Assessments? They have some interesting ideas to show mastery that could be applied to most any book...

anyone used alternative assessments for lit
aekmom replied to aekmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Sorry, here is the link... www.perfectionlearning.com/alternative-assessment-for-literature I was thinking of including some of the Glencoe type study guides or other ones people may recommend to get her thinking about analysis...I keep thinking/researching the key points of literary analysis they need to learn and learn to write about if anyone has any info.... Thanks so much for the feedback so far! -
anyone used alternative assessments for lit
aekmom replied to aekmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
If no one has used them would a more experienced person mind looking at it and giving me an opinion? It would be greatly appreciated by this newby! -
Just wondering if anyone has used the guides offered by Perfection Learning called Alternative Assessment for literature? My public schooled daughter who I am considering homeschooling would respond really well to this. If I picked higher level lit, did some sort of vocab/grammar and a learn to write well piece, could this be enough? For an intro to lit class, let's call it....opinions please!

how do you grade?/best language arts option
aekmom replied to aekmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thanks for the ideas....I have looked at so many options my head is spinning! -
As I continue to try to wrap my head around starting homeschooling at the high school level, I am struggling most with language arts.....in transitioning from public school that was way too easy, I don't want to overwhelm with a ton of writing but do want to foster growth of critical thinking and analysis of literature....would be happy to outsource but needs to be mostly secular... Have also found options to do on my own as far as reading and analyzing books but how do you assign a grade for a transcript? Would take any and all advice from you all, would like to make it work but seriously overwhelmed by choices.... Thanks!

Based on others experience, which is more than mine as I have none with homeschooling, at what age would you start AP classes? My back story is that my daughter is possibly ready for college level work...she needs depth and fast pacing to stay engaged, public school has been a failure...I don't really know what she is capable of beyond IQ scores... I am spending the summer looking high and low to research how I would go about homeschooling starting in high school...I never thought it would be something we would consider but public school has been an epic fail!

Michelle Garcia Winner and her social thinking curriculum...particularly superflex...her new book about an unthinkable called Unwonderer and one sided sid teaches to this topic. IMO all her work is amazing but this specific book would address this issue with strategies to use...the book is in comic book form..kids really buy into being superflex and battling the unthinkable..

aekmom replied to PeterPan's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Sounds to me like a 2e....needs things to be at his Intellectual level to sustain attention... New so not sure how old he is .... For more mundane tasks maybe a work/ play scenario with a timer? -
Thank you everyone....right at this moment I am really thinking I am done with public school...she has such a negative association that I don't think anything within those walls will be received well...thinking of piecing together a typical high school course load and then looking towards community college. And like 8filltheheart said I need to focus on getting her to where she can function in the world...counseling, speech and language services etc. She won't even comfortably use a knife cause she might cut herself...school seems to have taught her that the world is a scary unpredictable place...

Thanks everyone for the input! I would love to deschool, something she probably needs but I feel the pressure of starting high school. I am also a rule follower and I am trying to be more open minded about how schooling can be... As far as movies it is Harry Potter and only Harry Potter...it is her perseverative interest.. I know I could use it as a starting point for academics but I am just not that creative nor do I have the time...work, two other kids, but mostly just no creativity...I know my limits...
