  1. I was able to speak to my regional director tonight and the call was so very pleasant :) Finding out that the reason why my director may have hung up on me was because of a silly misunderstanding. However, she still should not have hung up on me. I have no interest in going back, but I would like to reconcile with my director. We are all supposed to be loving one another, right?
  2. The fight is over. I emailed my director today about the situation and so she called me. She pretty much was calling to let me know that she was unhappy with me going over her head (I had contacted the regional director). I had no other choice since she wouldn't communicate with me. She wouldn't even let me talk and then she hung up on me. Well, that's professional. Obviously we won't be going back.
  3. I went and joined another co-op that is more for fun than academic and I'm going to see if adding this in will help. I really want to leave CC on one hand, but on the other I am seeing good things coming out of it when I am working with Ds at home. As hard as this is, maybe I will hold on for at least the semester and see how it goes. This is such a hard decision! I'm going to try to push through and hopefully the issues with my director and the issue with the divider will work themselves out. Then at least i can say that I really gave it a try. I honestly wanted to hear both sides of likes/dislikes of CC. I hate it when these things turn in to bashes against __(enter name here)__ . That is not my intention. Maybe a post like this one can help someone else some day. I appreciate your comments. They have really helped me in processing all this. We'll see what happens...
  4. I went to the director and her attitude has changed towards me since I had an objection to how my son's class was put together. I was calm and gracious when I talked to her, but now she is acting like she doesn't want to even look at me. I mean, come on! It really is ridiculous. I said hi to her as she was walking past me and she looked at me and gave me a snarky smile. She had told me that it is against CC policy to take the tarp down and combine the classes (which I understand) but what is the difference if the classes are being split by a tarp and no one can hear themselves think! They essentially are still in the same room! I had joined because I love homeschooling my children. I wanted a more academic co-op for socializing and having playdates, etc. In my mind, it was a perfect middle point to homeschooling and private school. Only one day a week, I still have control of what my children learn, it's Christian, and a lot less than private school. Many communities don't have all those groups you mentioned in their communities. We don't. We will however be looking in to scouting.
  5. I stayed for lunch this week to see how the social part could play out at lunch. I had one person come talk to me. The tables were put together in a way that we couldn't really move around and visit. Some of the tutor's sat together but it seemed as if they were keeping to themselves. Everyone else either left after class or was staying because they have their older kids in Essentials. I did hear that many families were missing due to illness. I wasn't impressed with it and so I left early. This has been such an odd experience. It sounds as if you may have never had experience with how CC works? It starts early in the morning and for some families it runs all day depending on the program. As for a meet and greet, we already had many of those during the summer. Everything was going fine and was the reason why I decided to sign up with the group, but for some reason, many families backed out (which were the families that I had connected with) and now my son only has one maybe two boys to connect with. One of the boys is a know-it-all and intentionally leaves Ds out. The other is younger and he just hasn't had time to get to know him.
  6. Thank you everyone. I have been so stuck on the investment that I can't see past. I DO like using the CC curriculum at home with Ds. He does better with it at home. The social aspect of it is a non-issue because it's just sitting in a room with other kids and they don't have time to really interact on a personal level like other co-ops do.
  7. I have joined a new Classical Conversations community and I have to say that my ds and I hate it. We have to share a room with another class which has a painters tarp hanging from the ceiling as the divider which makes hearing our tutor extremely hard as well as hard to concentrate on the topic at hand. The memory work is exactly the same as if I stayed home and opened up my Foundations guide. I was expecting more "tutoring", not just introducing the weekly memory work. As for the community, it's no different than a public school setting where the parents sit next to each other but no one wants to talk. I could go on and on. I seriously want to leave but I'm holding on because of the money I have paid in to it. I have a bad case of buyer's remorse. What can I do? I spoke to my director (who all of a sudden has changed from sweet and easy going to "I'm busy and don't want to talk") and she said that if I move 100 miles or more and join another community then she will give me part of my tuition back. What if I don't want to join a different community and just want out? Can't I just get that money back? I know there are no refunds, but what can I do? I feel scammed and sick to my stomach. I almost want to report them to the BBB.
  8. I will already be using CC Acts & Facts cards and the Bible memory. I don't think I could add in any more cards. I'm looking for more of a reading list that can coincide with SOW.
  9. From what I've read the Guerber books are for older kids (4th grade and up) I own the books on Greeks and Romans. But wouldn't that be a bit overkill using SOW with those? They are spines in themselves. However, with that said, SCM uses the book on Greeks a her spine. Maybe I should ditch SOW and move over to SCM. It may be easier for me to implement the Bible in to his curriculum.
  10. I am in the middle of SOW vol.1 and trying to find a way to implement chronological Biblical history alongside so as to teach my son that the stories in the Bible were happening at the same time as what is being taught in vol. 1. Does anyone have any suggestions? I found the Egermeier's list on 'Paula's Archives' but was wondering if there is anything else out there. Also, is there a more chronological approach to using the SOW? It seems to jump around. I have been considering moving over to Simply Charlotte Mason's history modules because she implements the Bible into the studies chronologically and I really like that. But since I already own SOW 1 & 2, I'd like to see what's available before I do.
  11. AAS was too much for us as well so we are switching to Rod & Staff. I'm using the suggestions from TWM, however I'm going to try R&S before Spelling Workout and see how it goes. BJU is expensive and is geared towards a private school so even though R&S is as well, it's very affordable. From what I have read on other posts, forums, and blogs, R&S is the better of the two (but not by much).
  12. It is a booklist that goes grade by grade and guides you through teaching literature. I suggest going through Teaching the Classics first, use the list in the back, and when you are finished then buy Reading Roadmaps. Teaching the Classics is wonderful and engaging.
  13. Here's another question... Since SYS has copywork for almost every lesson, would I need copywork from other sources such as WWE?
  14. Well, I'm planning on doing the narration with SOW. I just don't want to buy books that we don't really need.
  15. As Spelling You See is somewhat new, I'm curious to hear what others think of the program. What are your experiences with it? Do your students retain what they are learning? What do you think about the time it takes to complete a lesson? Is it comprehensive enough? Is it lacking in something? Please comment as I have purchased level C but have not opened it yet and want to make sure that I'm not choosing the wrong program for my 8 year old. Thanks!
  16. So I went to the CC 3-day practicum this week and after learning about the trivium stages more, I have decided to go back to using FLL instead of Language Lessons for the Very Young. I came home and flipped through it and realized that LLftVY was way too easy and he probably would get bored after a couple weeks. I also purchased the CC Prescripts beginning handwriting book to use instead of A Reason for Handwriting. I like that I dont have to feel that I'm behind if I miss a day or two with the Prescripts. I returned the Pathway Readers and have ordered The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading to help him with his phonics. I guess we will just use the library for easy readers to practice. I still have SYS so we will see how this works. I am planning on notebooking for science instead of using a set curriculum like the Apologia Young Explorers series utilizing copywork and also doing copywork for Bible. I dont think we really need WWE since we will be doing copywork across the board. What do you think?
  17. I just attended the first day of Classical Conversations 3-day practicum and I'm finally understanding the "Why" of memory work. With that said, I'd like to know if "First Language Lessons" 2 would go well with "Spelling You See" level C. I have The OPGTR to continue on with phonics also. My son in in the grammar stage (CC Foundations) but I want to make sure that I'm doing school at home for language arts and math in case CC doesn't work out for us. This will be our first year in CC. I really like how simple they make it when it comes to curriculum. I am actually going to be returning unneccesary curriculum and I'd like some input. Will these two work well together? Do you know if the phonics/spelling rules line up with each other?
  18. Have you tried the IEW lessons for 2nd grade writing? It's not the PAL, but the Bible Hero Writing Lessons. http://iew.com/shop/products/bible-heroes-writing-lessons-teachers-manual
  19. Do any of you only use the Pathway Readers without the workbooks? How do you work on comprehension? Do you have your children notebook instead? I'm looking for ideas. Please help!
  20. I thought more about this all last night after making my last post and although this seems frustrating, I'm probably going to have the same problem with any curriculum. He's just in a funny place in math. I have R&S arithmetic 2 but I really want to sell it to someone that will enjoy it more - we don't, even though it's a solid program. I'm so grateful for all the encouragement. I contacted "Hunny" on the Sonlight forum (she had been the original suggester of RS to me) and she suggested to go through the package as if it was "box day" and so we did this morning. He is so excited and I'm shocked. What a confidence booster! The manipulatives don't look so intimidating to me this morning. Maybe I was just having a bad day, I don't know.
  21. Does anyone on here use the Sonlight reader lists for literature?
  22. I just purchased the set and got it in the mail today, so the only option would be to return it so I can get my money back. I am waiting for RS to contact me as I emailed them after they had closed seeing that I am in Oregon and they are ND(?) I can't believe how much "stuff" came in the box. I'm nervous about how much it would actually cost me to ship it all back. I realize that I don't have to ship all of it back, but at this point I'm not sold that this is the right set for us. We will be doing Classical Conversations this next school year and the math games and drill will already be taken care of. I'm thinking of finding something a lot more affordable and with less manipulatives. Don't get me wrong, I like manipulatives but this is too much. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm so overwhelmed and don't know how I'm going to have time to do this if I stick with it.
  23. This is frustrating to me since I have already paid so much for the entire set. :banghead: Just sayin'.
  24. I checked out the transition lessons, but it says it's for the 1st edition. I have the 2nd edition.
