Thank you for posting this.  I am interested in this for my son.  He took Mandarin online through the NSLI-Y through the state department this past fall and really enjoyed it.  He will be a junior next year.  I would like to try to attend the webinar, but there is not a link I could find on the website.

Bluehost her provider went down as part of the internet outages last week. The webinar registration is that QR code in the photo i posted. You will get to it from there.

  2. From Yang: The way it works in our school is students provide their time availability information on the registration form, then we group the students who are at the same level and have similar time availability together.

All group classes are small-size, between 3 and 6 students each group, so it's very easy to form groups that match students' schedule demand. For each level, we have the capacity to offer multiple groups at different times. Our team has over 10 teachers, most of whom have flexible schedules before after-school time on weekdays.

We plan to give parents time to register first, then at around mid-March, we can form new groups and determine the final schedule of each group.

Registration link for Chinese classes is here. Deposit of $100:

  3. Crossposted from Asian American Homeschoolers: A Collaborative Community on Facebook

I had a productive conversation with Yang Wang at Westlake about live homeschool classes online. She is working on an update to their website to make it clearer that they offer online Chinese courses. I will be assisting with developing that schedule of classes. I will be scheduling an online webinar for two homeschooling groups of interest: Chinese as second language and Heritage speakers (done in Chinese). She offers middle and high school classes. She told me that she will develop a schedule no later than 3/15 for registration.

Accredited online Chinese 1-4, AP and post-AP Chinese literature classes are offered. There are 10 teachers available to teach. I feel comfortable based on my almost 2 hour conversation to say that this is a strong contender. Integrated Chinese is used for 1-4. The classes are intentionally small min. 3 max 6. AP max 8. The cost is more expensive than average ($1400), but the level of personal interaction and emphasis in fluidity in conversation plus the extras of free conversational practice two sessions a week. I really am intrigued that they offer a Chinese immersion camp as well.

Stay tuned. Got a lot rolling today on this. I explained the gaps and pitfalls of current existing offerings and the critiques I had. She was very receptive and very curious to learn about homeschoolers. This is a more modern approach to the pedagogical model she follows. No old-school styles of teaching imported from overseas. She trained the teachers to deliver consistently in the same way with the values she prioritizes. The webinar will be recorded for families. It will be a weekday night 5 PST/8 EST. The online homeschool times are looking like early afternoon CST. this is the subpage with descriptions of the class levels. https://westlakechineseacademy.org/young-adults-10-18-yrs-old-classes/ Feel free to boost this in your circles. Custom classes for an existing group can be scheduled. Classes for youngers are possible, but I am solving for middle and high school levels as families are making decisions right now. I was able to get her to move up her schedule release from May to March 15.

This is very child dependent. Mine had the opposite reaction but he thrives on live classes. This is why “know your child” is a wise advice.

And this would be a bad match for my child. Live classes is a must. This seems like a need in the hs'ing world.

That's kind of a vague assertion. Maybe just get a peak flow meter and see. I had been on just turmeric before covid, only occasional inhaler use, and now I'm on Breo.

I legitimately could tell the difference before and after the treatments that I could not fully take a deep breath even though I was fine with peak flow meter and O2 stats. No problem with holding breath or shortness of breath either. It was the weirdest thing, and this was multiple times.

Tried H2 blocker. Worst abdominal cramping ever. It was so bad. Apparently I don't handle Pepcid well at all. It lasted all day from after taking 2nd dose.

It is brutal, I'm so sorry. This was dd's reality for several months, and not being able to sleep or calm her nervous system was such an obstacle to healing. You're absolutely right to prioritize this.

Different things work for different people, but dd was diagnosed with reactive airway disease when she got a second opinion with another pulmonologist. (The first one said her chest X-ray was normal and she'd feel fine a month, haha). The second night after she started a 3-month course on a steroid inhaler she suddenly was able to sleep, for the first time in months. She still has some nights with insomnia, but mostly she's sleeping well which has been a game-changer.

She does do a lot of breath work, meditation and yoga and definitely feels like those things help, but the inhaler made an immediate and consistent difference. I mention this in case addressing breathing issues or another physiological issue might help you or someone else with sleep.

Oh! For perimenopausal me, drinking a cup of tea in the evening with one holy basil and one fennel teabag helps me sleep through the night. Both herbs reduce histamine. Some LC folks take antihistamine medications like loratadine. My understanding is our histamine levels typically peak between 2-4 am, and in perimenopause and Long Covid histamine can be elevated and further exacerbate that normal peak, causing insomnia. Really hope you find something that works for you.

I'm also intrigued by Nasalcrom nasal spray (there's a generic that's cheaper by Bausch and Lomb, too). Active ingredient is cromolyn sodium, a very old and generally safe drug, that reduces histamine and prevents mast cell degranulation. The nasal spray helps some folks with brain fog. Once dd settles in with her supplement routine I am going to suggest this to her.

@Acadie you gave me some ideas to pursue. I actually was on an asthma medication because I have viral-induced asthma. So Covid was no different in this regard. I weaned myself off at some point because I was breathing better but perhaps I did that too early and still needed to stay on that longer even though I don't appear to have shortness of breath. The guy I see every month does say that I'm not breathing properly, and my diaphragm keeps getting blocked because of long Covid. I do notice that post treatment I breathe a lot better. I suppose going back on to see it that changes anything isn't a big deal.

I was stuck with using benadryl as a last resort to deal with histamine levels because I don't tolerate any of the OTC antihistamine meds. They all cause side effects of drowsiness and depression in me. I finally stopped benadryl because I was concerned about staying on it too long. I am taking quercertin though to see if it is effective as an alternative antihistamine/anti inflammatory. Do look into NAC though for brain fog and fatigue. I don't have the guanfacine prescribed yet...but NAC also helps with lung function.

  7. Any of the rest of you dealing with fragmented sleep? It's terrible. I recently started magnesium gylcinate and extended release 3 mg melatonin to deal with this. This is brutal. Waking up at 2 or 3 am for the day. Even if I can return to sleep with sleep meditations (sometimes) I can never stay asleep. It's like a short nap. Maybe sometimes if I am lucky, I can do that twice. I was always a night owl...and now I have to be so strict about sleep hygiene. No devices after 8 and lots of breathwork, meditation and wind down to quiet my nervous system.

  8. @Acadie @busymama7 @KSera @PeterPan @Lawyer&Mom Have no idea who else is dealing with LC issues that my brain has missed because I know there must be more. I so seldom come on the boards these days. Just don't have the energy because of the LC. Is there a place where boardies are having LC discussions or is it only here? Is there a group? There's hard-fought knowledge in these circles. I think boardies generally have been more thoughtful about discussions than what is out there in on social media. I am aware of the natto & LDN but haven't gone there yet.

I have been getting a specialized reflexology treatment using Softwave Technology from a guy who flies into my area from ATL once a month and one of the areas they always treat is my lymphatic system which is always blocked up. It isn't cheap, but it is the only thing that has given serious symptom relief. Definitely not a cure, but I feel so much better.

  9. @Farrar Could you describe the type of student whom this class was not a good fit for?
@WTM Did you happen to enroll in this class? What did you think?

Everyone else who can chime in...

I have a STEM focused kid who doesn't love writing, but I do want him to be well prepared for college. He has responded well to Cindy Lange's classes for the last two years and has improved but that may not be an option next year for us. So I am in search of another option.

  10. It's been hit or miss in SoCal. Sometimes cleaned out when we have been at TJs and Costco...but definitely limited. DH scored eggs the other day because he was in the warehouse first thing in the morning, but it looked like they were going to run out. This was all before Christmas though. Probably hasn't changed. The workers said that they haven't been able to keep them in stock.

  11. I personally find it frustrating that the medical community does not track possible downstream connections to prior Covid infections. I think this is a big deal that strokes, clots, PE, DVT, heart attacks, etc are not being tracked this way. ETA: add to that other stuff like diabetes, kidney failure, neurological damage, etc...There's a whole lot of stuff that I believe we are going to see in the years to come. I realize I am coming at this as someone who is dealing with LC...but it is darned frustrating to watch this level of denial going on.

There is an increase in the rate of aneurysms etc post-covid although obviously it’s not clear whether that was a factor. But seeing as this is an awareness raising thread I think it’s worth noting.

I think it is worth noting he had Covid 4 months prior. It is well documented that Covid damages the vascular system and causes cardiac complications.

  13. @Acadie ...I hear you. I am so sorry that your daughter is going through this. It is life altering and devastating.

    Everyone else...

Healthy, active, and functional people are getting long Covid. Lots and lots of us. I had Paxlovid myself but I still got long Covid. The picture that you are high risk or older to be at risk of long Covid and have to have had severe illness is not the face of long Covid anymore. Mild and asymptomatic illness and younger. So many are women as well.

I am doing my level best to avoid reinfection, and my family still has not had Covid because I isolated right away. It's frankly hard and difficult to do life this way, but the price is way too high to lose your quality of life to not do simple things to mitigate your risk. I definitely do not want to lose the progress I have made in my fight to recover by retriggering this all over again.

I see so many who are in such chronic pain and suffering for years now that they wish Covid had killed them because their suffering is so awful. Just go spend some time reading on Survivor Corps on Facebook. They purposefully make that group public so that people see and understand what long Covid is like. I can't be on there myself regularly because it's too hard on me to be there and work on my own recovery.

There are some concerns about the stats in this VA study. It’s likely that second infections can cause long Covid but they need better designed studies.

On a positive note, scientists around the world are figuring out the pathways for the different types of long Covid and are already treating some patients successfully. It’s pretty amazing actually.

Best to not get reinfected though.

eta: Ugh. Sorry you’re dealing with LC.

I can tell you in the surveys done in the long covid communities. 2nd infections are causing worsening of symptoms. Like this one for example. https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/new-survey-suggests-reinfection-worsens-long-covid

and there are many popping up in the LC communities who are getting LC after their 2nd, 3rd or 4th bout with Covid and they really thought they were bullet proof because of their prior infections.

  15. Reinfection is really something to be avoided. People don't realize how life-changing long Covid is and the rate of long Covid is around 1 in 5 or 1 in 6. Long Covid has really upended destroyed my life from my one infection (vax'd and boosted). Long Covid is quite common with mild and even asymptomatic Covid now. Something like 7.5% of the population is currently dealing with long Covid symptoms.

As far as curriculum names go I’ve always thought Abeka was the weirdest, but if you start a company you can name it whatever you want.

for some reason I always had the idle thought maybe it was a play on ABC phonemes as long A, b, hard C. This is just me making up a backstory for myself. Haha.
