  1. To me, Job A would be the easy choice. But when you make your decision, listen to what your gut says and make sure your final decision is in agreement with the gut test.
  2. We really liked Pandia Press Ancient history. with SWB History of the Ancient World a runner up.
  3. Not dog experience, but cat experience. I've had a lot of cat experience over the years because I've had many cats. I too would have liked for a vet to make a house call, but in our area, those vets require an exam first, in addition to the house call and euthanasia experience, and it's just far too much money. The only regrets I have ever had were waiting too long. In the cases where I did that, the animal suffered needlessly because I was a big giant chicken. I kick myself to this day over those 2 cats, and one was 21 years ago.
  4. Congratulations, you lucky duck! I wish I could have had another child, but I got too old and my pregnancies after 43 ended in miscarriages. I have 2 kids, the first born when I was 40 (girl), the second when I was almost 43 (boy). So our second was not starting over. I had all of those same worries that you have, and then a few more piled on from the miscarriages I had had before him. He was really wanted, without question, but I sweated every. single. day. that something would go wrong; I was sweating it in the delivery room my worries were so bad. But yup - everything worked out just fine; in fact, I bounced back faster after my second (I had 2 c-sections) because I was in better physical shape from exercise and knew what I needed to recover and sought it out. I think we hear all the negative stories and none of the positive ones as older mothers. I acknowledge that there are risks with older motherhood, but success stories are not exactly rare, either.
  5. 4 Cats here, and 4 carriers. In an emergency where we would all have to evacuate (fire, hurricane) I'd need one for each cat.
  6. I thought he was a whiny, privileged ingrate, but then I listened to a few interviews he gave and I don't blame him for heading for the United States. He appears to have been treated horribly. I know this is just "his side" of the story, but the royal family has told their side for years, so fair's fair. Even so, I do believe in the future he will regret the fracture, probably irreparable, he caused between him and his family.
  7. Wow, I was raised Dutch Reformed and never heard of this.
  8. Keep the syllabus and some graded work. My DS applied to Columbia and they wanted a graded English paper. My son's DE English teacher re-opened the Canvas site for him to access his paper and comments.
  9. Changing the weighting on the syllabus would never fly at my school and the prof would lose a grade appeal based upon that alone. We are allowed to change the progression of the course with notification in writing to the student, however.
  10. Is this a standard thing when someone requests a 5.0 scale? To add 1 POint to DE and AP classes and 0.5 point to honors classes?
  11. I know this is an old thread, but I would like to update my experiences with NYS colleges in case anyone else is searching this topic. We are Virginia residents and both my kids applied to NYS colleges. In 2020, DD did eventually get admitted to 2 NYS SUNY colleges (Morrisville and Cobleskill), as well as a private college in NYS (Cazenovia). The private college (Cazenovia) said as long as our homeschooling state recognizes a homeschool high school diploma, we were good with that; they required nothing additional and DD was admitted without incident. On their websites, SUNY Morrisville and SUNY Cobleskill had 2 separate criteria for admission of out-of-state homeschoolers. Morrisville said they *would not* accept the 24 dual credit option in lieu of a high school diploma, and required a superintendent letter or GED. A GED was out of the question, and our district superintendent could not understand why NYS wanted this and didn't know what to even do with the request for a "letter of Equivalency"; she was baffled and in the end our district here in Virginia couldn't help us and would only issue their usual "you have met the requirements to homeschool and are in compliance" letter. Cobleskill said they would accept DD's 24 credit and said don't worry about the super letter. I asked why 2 SUNY schools had different requirements and was told that the ways to demonstrate high school equivalency that were presented on the NYSED website were options for colleges, but not requirements that they must accept those options. So Morrisville decided the super letter was what they would take, and Cobleskill decided the 24 credit option or the super letter was OK. When it came time for the actual applications to hit the admission counselor desk however, Morrisville took the letter I had (which wasn't really an equivalency letter at all) and admitted DD, and Cobleskill gave me crap about the 24 dual enrollment credits! After a combination of arm-twisting and begging, Cobleskill did finally accept the 24 credits and DD was admitted to Cobleskill, as well. She is currently in her junior year at Morrisville. DS is now applying to Fordham University and Pace University (private schools in NYS); the admission counselors are fine with a homeschool diploma, as long as our state recognizes a homeschool diploma as valid. That is key - your home state must recognize the homeschool diploma as evidence of satisfactory high school completion and then private schools will give you no grief. Incidentally, my DS is also applying to private colleges in Massachusetts (Bentley, Harvard) and they both have the same criteria as NYS private schools.
  12. I've listed my son's GPA on his transcript as unweighted on a 4.00 scale. A scholarship he is applying for wants "High school transcript GPA based on a weighted 5.00 scale". What the heck do I do with that?!?! How do I calculate a weighted GPA from a 3.91 (unweighted on 4.00 scale) GPA? Also, the GPA won't match the transcripts we've already posted to the Common App and sent in for early action if I change the transcript now.
  13. My son is earning a 0.5 credit for a similar course. Fidelity.com has lots of tutorials that he used, and here is an additional resource on that topic: https://www.khanacademy.org/economics-finance-domain/core-finance
  14. So have been looking over these suggestions and am wondering more about this resource. Have you ever used it? It seems to be something I would teach at home, but I am not sure. Is this a long class you sign up for or something I teach? When we sign up for it, does the student get web pages available on which to answer questions, create assignments, etc...?
  15. History odysseys history programs work for us, but they no longer have a world history for high school. so when I say that I’m looking for a traditional program I’m looking for some thing that has reading, discussions, some writing activities. we’re open to anything really.
  16. I am looking for a world history class or western civilization class for my son for high school. We are open to online classes or discussion classes or traditional work for this type of class. My son is a senior in high school. Any recommendations?
  17. One college my son is looking at told me that his dual enrollment credits can be used for high school or for college, but not both. There are a few extra math and foreign language credits that he has that we plan to use for college credit (but not high school credit since he has plenty of math and foreign language for high school). So my question is how do I construct his transcript for this college? Do I just send them the same transcript with all of his high school courses that I send to every other school? Or do I construct a special transcript for the school with only the high school credits that he plans to use for admission when he applies ?
  18. I volunteer for a cat rescue. Identify a cat rescue near you and contact them to tell them she is friendly, you are willing to pay for a spay and rabies vax, and ask can they help find her a home. Please continue to feed her, though; she did not aske to be dumped.
  19. Try to solve/accommodate this privately and within the family. Calling the cops for assistance when a dementia patient gets ornery in certain states will get the dementia patient a trip to jail for the night (I kid you not).

Totally washable, well-made, roomy, lots of pockets, and can put a zipper close on it instead of the snap ones I have.
  21. One of the signs of dementia is personality changes and this was what my mom had to deal with. My dad was a mild-mannered guy who normally wouldn't say shit if he had a mouthful, but once dementia set in he would call my mom a bitch and fling the F word around, which would upset my mom to no end.
