I personally hated getting Christmas gifts that weren't usable for almost a year. I think that's worth keeping in mind. I love the book safe idea because it could be fun to use right away. If they're not already a robe kid maybe a robe thinking towards dorm life but they could use it now?

If he's feeling anxious his brain is trying to be helpful. As a simple thing to try "I think you'd get better rest in your bed. Let's try leaving your lamp on and see if that helps."

Another vote for that there is no such thing as "too old" for this. Really, truly. On anxious nights I sometimes sleep with the light on. My therapist said it makes perfect sense that it helps. It eases my mind a bit that if something happened I would be able to see. I have had times where I panicked every time I was in bed so I slept on the couch for a time.

Good point about the gift game with the wrong crowd. Our family plays it and it's very fun but I've played with other groups and it's been awful .

I mean that gift giving, if one must do it, doesn't have to be "here is an object I wrapped in paper and I want to watch you open it". I'm assuming that the request in the op is regarding Christmas. I think they should speak love in a different way but was making suggestions if they must do gifts. Yes, tangible means something you can touch which includes a letter, a cookie etc.

Again, the point is to use the language the other person understands best *but* if you want to stick with gift giving then brainstorm other ways you can scratch that itch. Shop for greeting cards which suit the recipient. Send thoughtful letters. "Celebrate" a national whatever day with something consumable. For Christmas, spend shopping energy on finding recipes for treats and make a packet for each household or offer to supply the whole meal for your gathering. Gifts = thinking of you and I know you with something tangible attached... that's more than just presents
