  1. For the long version of my name, I would be Scarlet. For the shorter version of it, which I commonly go by, Bella. I like Bella! But it is popular where I live now and my name was not very common when I was born.... :confused1:
  2. Can you ask your pediatrician for some names of clinics? I know my clinic had lists of those sorts of specialists. Or check with the NP office or do a google search for your area. I found our clinic by searching the internet as they were just starting out (experienced therapists starting their own clinic only 10 minutes away.) Where I live, ps provides very minimal OT services if any at all and the best therapy is from several good clinics specializing in children. Both of my dc had extensive OT and it was always covered by insurance. Good luck to you!
  3. Is this something prescribed or a supplement? Maybe it really does make him feel strange. Ds got strange dreams from 5-HTP which has that ingredient in it. Can your ds be more specific as to how it makes him feel? My own son balked at taking any meds for quite a while. I talked privately with his health care provider and she first presented it to him as sort of an experiment to see how he would do for a month and then re-evaluate. He ended up feeling better and continued to take it. He is 16 now and it is really difficult as they get older to "make" them take anything. He recently decided he didn't want to take his med for sleep and his psychiatrist said it was ds's decision and did not try to pressure him to take it any longer. It can help to have another outside person to help evaluate and help guide in the decision. And a lot of it can revolve around how the matter is presented to him, for example not pointing him out as a problem to be solved but how can we work this out together for everyone's well being. Good luck to you!
  4. Magnesium glycinate is easy on the stomach, easy to take. For me, it helps along with staying well hydrated with water. Good luck to you!
  5. As the OP, I am sorry I never got back on here to say thank you for all of the suggestions. I did look at them and actually have some already that I can use.
  6. Great article. I remember lots of play time, singing, marching, art, etc., when I was in kindergarten. Even into grade school we had two or even three recess periods a day, lots of time for jump rope, hopscotch, etc. Now, many kids have to go to OT to learn those skills!
  7. Ds 16 is having another NP eval tomorrow now that it has been just over three years since the last one. That is what was recommended at that time. Just wondering if anyone has any advice on what I should be asking for or remembering to bring up at this stage of the game. The eval is with the same psychologist as last time so she does have the last eval and his history. She did say she would talk to me prior to the testing and to make sure he has taken his meds that day. I just don't want to forget anything that should be addressed. I do have some behavioral things I want to bring up as well as a few academic concerns and things such as finding out if the meds have made any difference in his scores for processing speed, IQ, etc. Thanks!
  8. I keep getting "page not available" in the US. Must be down.
  9. I have questions, too, on the grain free, sugar free in addition to the rest you mentioned above. I have been GF for years but since being diagnosed with lyme late last fall, I have found it so hard to do all the rest. I am on antibiotics, too, which makes me crave sugar as well so this has been really difficult. I know how hard it is for me as an adult but I can imagine it is ever harder for a child to try and deal with all of this. If anyone wants to pass on any more ideas feel free to PM me. I am seeing a LLMD and may possibly see a lyme specialist next month if the LLMD thinks I need that kind of care. I have tried reading the books on Lyme but find it hard to comprehend it all with the cognitive issues. I need something simple to follow, spelled out for me without all of the medical-ease language and extensive scientific terms in some of these books, LOL! I hope your dd is doing better soon!!
  10. It reverts a phone to its original settings, removes all data and info added to the phone, makes it like it was when it was new. I don't know the exact steps but it may involve pushing certain buttons, perhaps removing the battery. A techy kid could do it. It would remove the Funamo app.
  11. We are using Funamo now and it works well, but if your child knows how to do a reset on their cell phone and you are not diligent about checking the website and phone daily or more, they can get back onto anything. Don't ask me how I know...
  12. You are not alone! I have had one heck of a year and sometimes it seems like a crisis is an ongoing thing in our family, everyone taking a turn, as soon as one crisis seems to calm down, another begins. :confused1: It really takes a toll on my physical and mental health. Sending you hugs and prayers! Lots of good advice here from the great moms on this forum as always! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  13. I remember my dd having problems with that as well. She still does occasionally. I found this game online, hope it's okay to post link: http://gotkidsgames.com/sv/sv.html They also say they have worksheets to purchase for $1.00 to reinforce it.
  14. I hope your weekend is relaxing and you feel better soon. If you were referring to congestion from allergies, I totally get it. When that happens to me I am in a complete fog! I have days like that all the time but I attribute it to old age. Take care :grouphug: !
  15. Dateline, Sunday, April 12, 7/6PM central, NBC, is having a program which follows two young men as they graduate high school, how their mothers try to get services for them, etc. It took three years to produce the show. Just saw an ad for it and thought it may be of interest to some here. My dd isn't quite as affected as these young men but I may watch it anyhow. Looks interesting!
  16. I am looking for something to use with dd 13 (reading at about 5th grade level) to help with reading comprehension. She especially has difficulty with summarizing, idioms, and to a lesser degree story elements such as setting, character. I know that for the idioms I have to explicitly explain many of them to her as she is a very literal thinker. She hasn't really done any formal writing program and she tends to copy things directly from stories instead of putting things into her own words. Has anyone found anything geared for kids on the spectrum that deal with these issues and perhaps other ones that we haven't even discovered yet? Thank you!
  17. Glad to hear you are finding answers. That has to be a huge relief. :001_smile: Good luck to you!
  18. I always intend to continue some things through the summer but it doesn't always turn out that way. For example I need a break and after being diagnosed with Lyme disease last fall, I now know why I am so exhausted and why my brain isn't working the greatest at times. I always end up feeling incredibly guilty for not doing more during the summers, but I have probably had it at least since 2009. My kids definitely need to continue on with math and reading and my older one, ds 15, could use some formal science instruction. Dd 13 is now enjoying reading on her own so that will be easier and she is making progress with TT so that can continue. I cannot control the outside world, such as ds telling me all the guys on the baseball team are finished with school so why can't he be finished as well. He feels a lot of pressure from hearing that but he just isn't so lucky in academics that he can afford to take off. I am looking for ways to provide review and continued learning without it being a lot of extra work for me. I am also hoping for more direction from the NP after ds's updated eval next month. Maybe that will help me focus on the most important areas first.
  19. Thanks, One Step! We had to pay in advance and I am not quite sure how to handle it other than to keep praising dd for the great job she is doing. We only have a few weeks left until she is finished. Dd already suffers from low self-esteem so this hasn't helped.
  20. For ds, almost 16, he is getting his neuropsych eval/testing updated in May so we will see what that reveals and whether being on meds has changed anything. Personally, while taking classes away has been beneficial in some ways, the constant running makes it difficult for me to accomplish much of anything with a teen who just wants to sleep late and not get an early start to get things finished before we have to leave. I did purchase AGS General Science and would like to do more with literature. I think that we really need to get serious about life skills and I am looking for some resources for those types of things (handling money, filling out forms, keeping his room clean, taking initiative). We also want to evaluate over the next year whether or not we would begin the process for guardianship when he turns 17 next year. For dd, who will turn 14 in a couple of months, we will again evaluate whether or not to use services from the ps. We did not this year for many reasons and her IEP needs to be updated either way we decide. I am assuming that would involve some testing by the ps. I would like to work more intentionally on spelling as it really stands out in her attempts to do any writing, along with constant reminders to use proper punctuation. She will continue with TT (she is doing level 5 now with good success). I also want to find something for science and history that would give her a good overview in spite of her lack of interest in either subject. And as with ds, she really needs work on life skills. I don't think I will continue with tutoring for reading for either of them. My greatest concern recently is that the tutor is telling dd that she needs to read more challenging books. She is currently reading at about a 4.6 level for enjoyment and has excitedly taken those books to show the tutor. My concern with that is that last summer I was desperate to get her to read (posted here about it) and now she is doing that but not at a high enough level to satisfy the tutor. But still she is excited about her books. She felt badly, almost embarassed that her tutor did not share her excitement. I told her not to take them anymore. I am open to any suggestions :001_smile:
  21. Good luck to you! He has you for his mom, advocating for him and that is a major part of the process of getting him the help he needs. You are on the right track. :001_smile:
  22. Maybe not erasable, but my ds, who is diagnosed dysgraphic, likes Miffy scented gel ink pens (got on amazon and I never noticed the scent even though I am sensitive to scents). He has really liked using these and wants me to order more. I know they are a bit pricey but these have lasted him since fall 2013. He also likes Pilot G-2 pens, both fine and a bit wider tip.
  23. You're a good mom! :grouphug: Can I come on the vacation? I really need one, too! Or at least a day off!
