  1. Thanks for the ideas ladies. I can't get any appoints, except for the eye dr. until we see the ped. I've tried. But how can I help him learn or what should I try in the mean time?
  2. Doing all of this! They are a little tired of me by now, but that's fine with me. And I agree, this is to long of a wait. But they see it as a "Well Child Check" and those are put on the back burner. Grrrr!
  3. Thank you all for all your help on my thread, "Not Learning Letters." We have a Well Child Check aapt. on July 31st. We can't get any evals. done or an eye appt. until after that. So we are probably looking into Sept. before anything can get checked. What do you suggest I do to help him in the mean time?
  4. He can imitate the signs. He just doesn't like to and has a hard time remembering them. But if I show him, he can do them. I don't have a problem with getting evals. And plan on doing more than just the eye appt. the past couple of days with having to go out of town unexpectedly has just really got me behind. And I can't get him into his Pedi., which is where I have to start, until July 31st.
  5. I have tried Child 1st. They have "signs" for each letter. The shapes they make with their hands are more like the shapes of the letters themselves. For example the letter at is made with two hands. Does that make sense? I know ASL and so does my 8 yo, but not the son we have been discussing.
  6. Thank you for this idea. I have tried something similar to this and it didn't work. He didn't remember the signs or like making them.
  7. Sorry I had to run out on our conversion ladies. We had to unexpectedly go out of town over the last couple of days. Thank you so much for all your help and input. I am going to be looking into all of it and praying about it all. I am sure I'll be back with more questions. Still waiting on the eye Dr. to call. If I haven't heard from them by lunch, they will be hearing from me! Thank you all, again.
  8. OK ladies, We took the Barton pretest. Here are the results Level A He got one wrong. Two of them we had to do twice Level B He got two wrong. Level C He got them all wrong. He couldn't do it because he either repeated me wrong, pulled down the wrong colors or both. Now what?
  9. Would you recommend I go this way and stop with the trying to learn letters and sounds?
  10. Thank you for your encouraging words! Does your son have LDs? At what age did he finally get it? Hope you don't mind me asking.
  11. 1. About five of them.2. Most of the words I tried. Had a hard time with W. Can't do L. 3. Immediately - yes. 15 seconds - no
  12. Thank you. Not sure why I didn't see that when I went looking.
  13. sbgrace, Thank you so much for your help and links. The links you gave are very helpful and given much information. We have tried and are still using the Leap Frog videos and I sing the song throughout the day and while he is writing his letters. Still no go.
  14. Elizabeth, Where do I get the Barton pretest? Is this something I can do myself?
  15. My eye Dr. Is listed on there and I really like him and trust him.
  16. So, an eye Dr. listed on this sight, COVD.org, is one that I would need to take him to. Correct?
  17. Thank you so much for your help. I will be checking into everything you said and may be back for more questions.
  18. Thank you for the information. I just ordered the book from the library. He is not reading yet. He is trying to sound out words if I make him, but he cannot blend the words and get the right word out.
  19. I have a DS who will be 7 yo in Nov. He is a bright and very logical little guy, however he still doesn't know his letters and their sounds and we have been working on them in some form or fashion since he was three. I believe, but don't know for sure, that this is beyond "he's just not ready" because he can write and verbally spell his name which has two Es and two Ts in it. However, if I ask him to write an E or T or what one is, he hasn't a clue. The other day I asked him what the letter T on the key board is and he said, "E" and then I asked him what the E is and he said, "E." I am looking for insight as to what might be wrong and what curriculum or way would be best to help him learn his letters and their sounds. Thank you for any insight or help you can give.
  20. The guide just says, "Says this _________________ and then say that ______________. And then this". And I just try to follow that and look at the guide and say "this" and then look at the guide to say "that." Clear as mud? I know it sounds like a personal problem! Lol
  21. Thanks for that. Any one else?
  22. I am feeling a little lost and could use some input. I have a 6 yr and an 8 yr. They will be in 1st and 3rd grade. We have been loosely using HOD, but need to change because as much as I want to love it, it just doesn't fit. We have tried LHFHG and Beyond. I think it isn't a fit because even though I love the layout of the guide, I get stuck trying to follow it word for word and not like having to keep going back to the guide. Personal problem, I know. So I could really use some input on any of the following plans I am considering. 1. MFW either Adventures or ECC. The con with these is I am not a big fan of the teacher guide lay out but I could make it work. And I don't see how much they could get out of Adventures study one state a day. If someone could tell me other wise, that would be great. 2. Going with a combination of Galloping the Globe and Expedition Earth, A Living History of Our World Vol. 4 World History, and Science in the Beginning. The con, sounds fun but more planning on my part. Not that that is a problem but sometimes I do so much more planning than implementing. 3. Moving onto HOD Bigger and making it work. The con here, once again, it doesn't fit me real well but I could try harder to break away from the guide and make it work. And I kind of like the idea of studying World History and geography before studying more American History. So, not sure if there is a specific question here just hoping you can help me sort this out or give me some input. Thank you very much.
  23. Great ladies, thanks for the help. Now, any ideas on Health? I don't even know where to begin looking.
  24. I am planning on using Science in the Beginning with my 3rd and 1st grader this coming fall. I am wondering if this can just be done 3 days a week so that we can do Health 2 days a week. Asking because I don't know how many lesson there are so could we finish it just doing 3 days a week. Also, what would recommend for these grades for Health? Thanks!
  25. Climbing to Good English is a lot like R&S.
