  1. Looking at the link, I was taught zaner-blozer. I intend to teach DD the cursive I learned. DH was taught d'nealian. Last month, I made DH write cursive. I told him some letters are written wrong. I insisted mine is right because I've been writing in cursive ever since it was taught to me while he writes in manuscript. Turns out we learned different styles.
  2. I agree. Effective notes-taking is one of the important study habits every student must learn to do well in school. Students with clean, organized notes are usually the ones that do well in the tests. I had an interesting discussion with another mom in the playground last month. DD has read books by herself before she was 2.5yo but I discovered she could not spell the words. For example, she knows the meaning of refraction and when I show her a list of similarly spelled words, she could identify which is correctly spelled. However, when I ask her to spell the word out she could not remember. Well she could tell me the beginning letter and end letter but the rest is a jumble. I thought that, maybe the issue is because she could not write them yet. But the other mom disagreed, telling me that being able to spell is not connected to handwriting. Well, I have found that as we do handwriting practice with words not just letters in the past month, her ability to spell has improved. If she writes the word, she could spell it too.
  3. I've never been away from DD. I do leave her to go to salon or spa for the day but not overnight. We did consider leaving her with my in laws while DH and I go to Vegas for 4nights. We changed our minds and took her with us. Actually it's DH who cannot bare to be away if he can help it. He's away for months at a time due to work so if he can take us even if it's personal expense he will. I don't mind leaving DD with family.
  4. We move regularly and travel a lot in between. At our last move, we practically lived on our luggage and stayed in hotels for 3 months. This is my first yr of officially homeschooling. DD is 5yo and is supposed to enter K in sept. One of the reason I chose CLE as our core is because of the light units. I always travel with my iPad and have a lot of ebooks that we can use to do lessons. I also have apps so she can practice what she has learned. When we check in at the hotel, I always ask where is the nearest library, museums, zoos, parks and historical sites so we can check them out. We do workbooks everyday at home but we we are out, I try to make it a learning experience and do my best to tie it with our previous lessons. Honestly, iPad had made traveling and taking school wherever we go easy. 10+ yrs ago when I was in grad school and have to be away for months to do field work and data collection! I had to bring my Jurassic notebook PC and data in CDs. I also back up everything on a server so I can download them when I get Internet connection.
  5. I did a quick read through to the end and thorough reading of the parts that I can use for this year . I'll probably reread the book every year before I buy materials we are using. I'm not following all the suggestions, only those that I like. I found TWM and the forum in February. I was having serious doubts whether I am capable of homeschooling my daughter. I've been tutoring kids to succeed academically since I was 15yo but the thought of being responsible for her education kept me awake until dawn researching and reading any info on homeschooling. TWM gave me confidence I could.
  6. I have Academic writing in mind with every lesson. I've seen a lot of freshmen come into the writing center because they do not now what is expected of them with regards to reports and papers. I know OP said not Math. For me it's is important that DD is comfortable doing math. Whatever she decides to do, if she is going to university, she has to be able to do math. Philosophy and world history, simply because I would want to be able to discuss them with her someday.
  7. We hs an only. To sum it up, homeschooling suits us. DD is extroverted and looked forward to making many friends when she started preschool last year. She asked to be homeschooled after several incidents of being hurt by classmates. Understandably, hubby didn't want her to get hurt and he knew I could teach her. Mine is academic. I think I was the only parent checking out the grafts of the test results posted on several bulletin boards at the main hall of DD's former school. We live abroad and it's the only option other than homeschooling available. We move regularly and travel a lot due to my husband's work so we like the flexibility of hs. I did panic when I found out the curriculum options available. This forum has allayed my worries and uncertainties. I am also thankful to other homeschooling families in our area, they have been generous in sharing info. I have come to view choosing a curriculum is like buying a house. We have a budget and we look at different models, aware that we will be customizing it into our home. I used to see withdrawing DD from school as a problem we have to find a solution. We have come to realize that we have been presented with a gift, an opportunity to embark on an educational journey as a family.
  8. We live in Japan where the school year starts in April. DD's bday is February so I decided it is best to start April than wait for September to begin kindergarten. I like the schedule for Japan's SY, start in April, 6 weeks summer break from July, a week or so holiday break for Christmas and New year and 6 weeks spring break from March.
  9. I'm part of a homeschooling FB group in our area. The group is very helpful in answering procedural questions and support. In terms of content and materials, we differ because of our reasons for HSling. For most, it's either religion or health. In my case, I am not satisfied with the education provided by the school. I had a Jesuit education and taught history, philosophy, theory and area studies in the university. I would like DD to have the same education but since we live abroad and move regularly, I have to teach her myself. I use a curriculum like the other homeschoolers I know IRL, I supplement most of it with materials I think will suit our needs.
  10. We are committed to HS until 1st grade. We live abroad due to DH's work. We decided homeschooling is the best option for us. I have come to appreciate the flexibility and learning together as a family. We will see where the next assignment will be and if the school choices is satisfactory, we will reevaluate then. I'm prepared to homeschool until HS if necessary.
  11. I don't like to cook. Atleast twice a week I eat out with DD to try lunch sets at different restaurants. I justify it as research for when DH gets back from deployment , we know which are the good ones to take him. I also count it as culture class and away for DD to practice Nihongo and immerse in Japanese culture. Did I mention that DD and I live on fruits and salads when it's only us? I love to bake though, we have a steady supply of cookies or cupcakes in the house.
  12. It's my first time to buy so I spent $20. I needed 30mins worth of practice pages, I usually teach her for 10-15mins then she likes to be left alone to answer questions or do exercises. We are going out to get back up ink and folders to file them. If I don't see them, I forget about it.
  13. I'm homeschooling my 5yo. We have been trying but looks like she will be our only child. Both mine and DH's family supports our decision that it is best for our family situation. We live in Japan now but move every year due to DHs job. We tried school but the cons outweighed the pros. It is actually other people, that brought up the socialization card. Friends whose children are same age as DD, and her teachers. I simply say Dd socialize with different kinds of people not just kids same age as her. She interacts in settings like the store, restaurants, parks, post office, etc. Not just inside the classroom or playground. We just started but I'm glad to see that we are not alone homeschooling an only child.
  14. Yes. The order usually sits in the cart for atleast a week before I check out.
  15. We are finishing up with random work books I bought before our family made the decision to homeschool. We have kumon, brain quest, spectrum and AOP, etc. We are following Japan's school year by starting in April. DD just turned 5. We are using CLE 1st grade for Math, Reading and LA Science - science is simple, mini book print outs Social Studies - biography readers, culture studies Art - painting and drawing in Waldorf schools, origami level 2 and 3. Foreign language - Nihongo We are only doing classes 3x a week. She does as many lessons she wants in the work books. Twice a week we go out to interact with the locals in the park, do our errands and try out the food so DD can practice Nihongo. She picks out books she likes at the library and reads them on her free time, I let her choose which one she wants me to read to her at bedtime.
