  1. Dd just finished semester 2 of ASL at the CC. It included more vocabulary (of course), more conversation, more grammar and more deaf culture. Story telling was also included and really hadn't been in SL1. They used this book across the two semesters.
  2. I weighted 5.0 for AP, a course where a CLEP was passed at the end and DE classes.
  3. Ds came home for the night Saturday of Labor Day weekend. This is his 4th week of school. He is happy. He likes his suite mates and his classes. His schedule on a daily basis is quite amazing (earliest class is at 10). He likes all his teachers and loves his math teacher. Math (always his weakest subject) is his favorite class  . He has joined a couple of clubs and is still finding time to maintain his youtube channel, so right now things seem really good. One of his classes did a writers workshop for their drafts of their first paper. Ds had a killer week that week and just threw together what he thought was more of a brainstorming session than a draft and everyone told him what an amazing writer he is :svengo:. I give credit for his ability to do this to PA Homeschoolers AP English, but I hope it doesn't go to his head and encourage him to do such sloppy prep! Ds has always been a homebody, very introverted, and not at all independent. I was worried how dorm life and being forced to take responsibility for himself would go, and so far, I am quite pleased! I'm looking forward to mid-term grades to know how he is doing academically, but I'm glad he is happy and has adjusted well.
  4. The college I went to taught Pre-Calc under the name Elementary Functions (and still does). That is the only place I've ever heard that title. It is good to know it is taught somewhere else. :)
  5. The course after Algebra 2 at my high school was called Trig/Math Analysis. It was the equivalent of what is now called pre-calc and after it was calc, but only a very few people got to calc. There were 25 of us that were allowed to take Algebra in 8th grade, skipping pre-algebra. With a graduating class of just over 300, I think less than 10 took calc. I wasn't among them. I did dual enrollment my senior year instead.
  6. :iagree: These forums are the worst for making you believe your 12 yo child should be able to do all of school independently and if you aren't working toward that, you are failing them. The truth is few 12 yos are ready to do all of school independently. Some aren't ready to do anything independently. Our job is to meet them where they are. OP you failed for one week. That doesn't make you a failure, it is a learning experience. Now you know he can't take what he gets from the coop and make it happen on his own. As others have suggested, help him make a plan, then check on his plan several times through the week to see how it is going. By the end of the year, there is a good chance he will be great at making a plan and making it happen. However, he may not gain the motivation to make it happen if you quit checking. If this were a senior in high school, I'd say, work hard to get him to independence. With a 12 yo, I say keep meeting him where he is for as long as it takes. He will change dramatically before time to head off to college and be independent. Be patient.
  7. I had a friend who was sucked into a cult in college. It was all about belonging. She had been raised in a conservative religious home and hated it. The religion of the cult was no less restrictive, but it was so very strong on belonging and I don't think she'd ever really felt she belonged anywhere before. She couldn't resist. I don't know if she ever got out. She distanced herself from me after getting in.
  8. Um no. The concept is completely foreign to me.
  9. My goto at the moment is a banana, frozen pineapple chunks, coconut milk and protein powder. I cycle though. Before that it was frozen strawberries, almond milk and coconut powder, banana optional. Ds's fave is banana, peanut butter, sweet vanilla soy milk & protein powder. Dd is the most creative and I don't know her recipes, but it is always a fruit, spinach, soy milk, and who knows what else often chocolate is involved :).
  10. I believe I paid my OT (who had her own practice) $25/half hour for IM. We live in a very low cost area and she had a full time gig and did some extras on the side, but her practice was certified with IM. She was actually amazing and the best OT in the region. She worked with us because she knew us outside of that setting and I don't know if we got a special rate. That said, IM was just so-so for ds. I do think it helped with motor planning and control. I wouldn't have paid $160 an hour though. We did other metronome work outside of IM and I think some of the other stuff might have been just as beneficial and didn't require a therapist at all.
  11. I would at least make sure they know how to do a PowerPoint presentation. I don't think you are doing your kids any favors by not exposing them to at least a few different ways to present their ideas.
  12. Yes, typically College Algebra is Algebra 3. It is the non-trig sections of Pre-Calc. Dd is taking it now at the local CC and while there is review of Algebra 2, it is definitely continues on past Algebra 2. We also have Lial's and EKS is exactly right about their College Algebra text.
  13. 10-12 for A&P, but we do classes in semester blocks, so that will be a credit in one semester. She will take DO Physics in the spring and I expect it to take that much time if not a little more. So, the equivalent of 5-6 hours per week for a whole year.
  14. According to Readability: Readability Formula Grade Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 13.4 Gunning-Fog Score 16.8 Coleman-Liau Index 14.4 SMOG Index 13.1 Automated Readability Index 12 Average Grade Level 13.9 So any high school graduate should be able to read the children's library card application :svengo:
  15. We find that public school students and teachers generally have a very negative view of homeschoolers because most of those they meet are the ones who quit and put their kids in public school. Most of the people that quit, don't do it because things were going great. However, so far we haven't run onto any negative comments from college (during DE). Dd did have a professor who pretty much didn't believe she was only 15 :). She is petite and looks her age, but is very mature so people just assume she is older than she is. He wasn't at all negative about it once she explained she was homeschooled. Dd did have a girl who came to church and when she found out she was homeschooled told her how terrible that was and how sad that she is missing "everything". Dd asked what it was she was missing and it was homecoming, prom, football games. Dd said she wasn't really interested in dances and she goes to football games sometimes with friends. She went on to explain that to her, high school was about getting an education and she is very satisfied with the quality of her education, not to mention she is planning to graduate a year early which wouldn't have been possible if she had been in ps. The girl probably thought she was poorly socialized to not be interested in prom. We're ok with that.
  16. If your dh feels strongly about it, you could try the coop class. If it flops, you already own TT ;) However, having a teacher once a week with a text that isn't self-teaching can be at least as challenging as having no teacher with a program that is self-teaching. Really, there is no right answer here. Many kids go all the way through high school math with self-teaching programs. Many have parents involved and many farm it out to an outside teacher because math is important and they aren't comfortable with it. Only you can decide which category your family falls into. As I see it, you can keep going with TT until it stops working or switch now hoping to prevent future failure.
  17. Prentice Hall Concepts in Action works perfectly for the first half of the course (chemistry), then really doesn't match up well at all for the second half (physics). HIs syllabus for that book (he made it for me originally) only works for the first half. As long as you know that his syllabus is off and you will have to do a lot of jumping around to match chapters, all of the information needed is there. I used it twice. I'm not sure if I have a corrected syllabus, but if you end up using it, check with me and I'll see if I can find it.
  18. Me too. It is really nice to find out I'm not alone and not everyone thinks I'm crazy. :)
  19. My dd had the experience of our dog (when she was a puppy) eating her homework.
  20. Beautifully done. I would use this script and say no. There is no way I could have that much disruption to our homeschool week. None. This would be best done in person or on the phone, but if you know that in person would guarantee that you would cave in, do it by email or text. You really need to stand up for your family here. I'm sorry it is difficult for you, but protect the integrity of your homeschool. It is important.
  21. I'd use Lial's College Algebra. And the Student solutions manual.
  22. Thank you for saying this. I dropped ds off at college almost two weeks ago. Every breath was painful for days. Everything was a thought of him. Of course I want him to go. Of course I'm happy for him. It didn't mitigate how painful it was for me at all. Two weeks later, I'm doing much better. It is still hard. Yesterday when I went grocery shopping I nearly lost it seeing food that I normally buy for ds, but didn't need. I tell you all of that just to say, I get it. I feel like I'm not allowed to say it, but I get it. :grouphug:
  23. Thank you for that. I enjoyed the book as a kid and didn't take the scene as rape. I read it out loud to my kids years ago and still didn't take the scene as rape. I was wondering if I'd missed something. I'm glad to know I read it correctly.
  24. We did NaNoWriMo for many years and enjoyed it. Ds also did OYAN and their follow up Other Worlds and they were excellent. No regrets at all on the money spent on OYAN. I do know someone who got it, decided it wasn't a fit and was given a full refund even outside of their guarantee period. They are a very nice couple and have a solid reputation as fair.
  25. TT 2.0 is supposed to be much more standard in scope and sequence. I think you could feel ok about that. If cost is an issue with dh out of work Lial's Introductory Algebra bought used for less than $5 including shipping is a good option. If you need help with how to structure it for a year, please feel free to ask or look for threads in which Jann in Tx explains it. You will probably want the student solutions manual to go with it, but that too is just a few dollars. I would definitely look for something he can complete in a year. If you know Saxon isn't it, I would pick something else and give it a shot. There are lots of Algebra options out there. Look through the pinned thread and choose. Saxon works for some, but it is not for everybody. I would put your ds working 90 minutes on 15 problems in the category of - it isn't working for him.
