  1. I'm in FL and have no idea what an ESA is. The state does not give money to homeschoolers. There is the Gardiner Scholarship, which is given to students with certain disabilities to be used for school and/or therapies.
  2. Upthread she already said she's going with the guy her insurance company is sending. I highly doubt they would be sending out multiple people or working with someone who doesn't even have a legitimate business phone.
  3. 2 options for homeschooling - registering with the county or using an umbrella school. County registration can participate in extracurriculars at the schools starting in 6th grade (not academic classes unless it's related to the extracurricular, like band class) some elementary schools will allow participation, but it is up to the individual school dual enrollment is free (have to pay for your own books) have to keep a portfolio - can be checked at any time with 2-week notice (this is very rare) annual evaluation (standardized test or in person eval. - both have to be signed off by FL Certified teacher) Umbrella school technically you will be with a private school - so the director of the umbrella can set the rules of what they expect can be free (Florida Unschoolers) or paid dual enrollment is not free (there are rare exceptions to this) Florida Virtual School can use this as long as you are a resident full time - you are a public school student flex - can take 1 to 6 classes with the school without having to take the EOC exams offers AP, foreign lang., and IT certification classes (even the cert exams are free after you pass the class) Bright Futures This is the FL scholarship program and can be applied for by all students, but qualifications are different for homeschoolers (SAT/ACT scores have to be higher) Rules change for this almost yearly - so you have to keep up with this Homeschool association - FPEA (Florida Parent Educator Assoc) - very informative website
  4. Records are only deleted when you stop paying for an account, never "just because". The only complaints I've seen have been people who stopped paying, came back after a few months, and were mad that their kids records hadn't been kept. Cancelling an account is easy, you can do it right from the parent account page. I've never heard of them continuing to charge except for once on the facebook page. Someone complained that their kid finished the lessons for the grade but they were still being charged. This person had not cancelled via customer service or their account page because "they should have known their student was finished" and stopped charging. Sorry, but you have to do your part, too.
  5. 13 and 15. I agree that it should be mandatory, it is such an easy test and the results of high lead levels can be devastating.
  6. I'm in Florida and both my kids were tested for lead at their well-checks when they were younger. Not on Medicaid and 0 risk factors like living in an older home, etc., so it really depends on your pediatrician.
  7. In reference to the bolded, did you have a teacher account or just the student account?
  8. The foreign lang. is Rosetta Stone.
  9. Well, as noted in another post, she has an advanced 3 year old - so loads of experience  .
  10. Everything from BJU is religious. Fundamentalist Baptist - strict creation view. ETA - The $99 is per class, there are samples of the videos on their website.
  11. All the teaching applications I have filled out have explicitly asked if and why you have broken a contract. It does, in my opinion, move you to the absolute bottom of the pile if the reason doesn't meet their (hr &/or principals) expectations.
  12. The medical issue that caused the huge medical bills probably resulted in significant loss of income (no sick leave, no disability, possibly even a loss of employment if the person could not continue doing their job).
  13. You are correct. If the poster who has no insurance tried to buy it after the expensive hospital stay (I think it was 1,000,000), that stay would not be covered. Future services related to that event could not be excluded, but that poster would be on the hook for the 60% (her estimate).
  14. The OP's daughter was in private school for middle school, yet you keep saying she should just change the transcript. How is she supposed to do that? It would be dishonest and unethical. Attitudes like this ("just change the transcript and say you have done something you haven't) are exactly why there is a call for more oversight and regulation of homeschools.
  15. There are multiple courses on the site using the different textbooks, so you should be able to find one that matches.
  16. Not sure where you are, but all the schools around me (NE FL) got 11 - 12 weeks off. My nephew (Orlando) also has 12 weeks off.
  17. I'm in the same boat with my son. I'm looking at the BYU online option because I want him to have teacher support and we have liked other classes we have done through them.
  18. I know many here don't like it, but we use it for 7th as a base (except for math -- my son likes Teaching Textbooks). They have definitely beefed up middle school in the last couple of years, especially the "writing" chapter in Language Arts. We add lots of reading and additional classes (spanish, programming, etc.). I pick the writing assignments that I want them to do because some of the assignments are silly and others are overkill.
  19. Neptune Beach is one of a continuous line of "cities" where you are definitely not going to get any land without a whole lot of money. I put cities in quotes because there is no separation at all between Neptune Beach, Jax Beach, Ponte Vedra, etc. except a green city sign marker. ETA - The airport is over an hour away from the beach unless you miraculously catch every light just right (trust me, not possible) and the sheer congestion of the area.
  20. Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach, FL meets a lot of those requirements. You have to go inland to Callahan for farmland, but it is a beautiful area and has easy access to Jax Intl Airport.
  21. Dental Insurance definitely comes in PPO's and HMO's, so that is a valid question from the office. Sorry you're having so much trouble finding an office, though. When I was looking for my oldest, we ended up just calling offices directly and asking if they accepted our insurance.
