  1. Hello, if you read an earlier post of mine I am realizing my ds needs to do more work. We are working on changing and adding some new tasks. I was thinking it might be nice if he had something online that he could work on for the times I am unable to organize something for him. Or for the times he is stuck on something and has to wait for help before he can move on. So, in a sense, busy work but something educational that he can work through on his own. Something in addition to reading books. Something he would like. He loves science. Any ideas for a class or learning that can be done as time permits? Khan Academy? Anything else? Thank you!
  2. I am really enjoying reading all of the replies so far. It is confirming what I knew. We are too lax both in work expectations, structure, and discipline. Sigh. Time to amp up. He has extracurriculars covered though, which might be part of the problem. 2 instruments, computer, art, sport and we are starting a hobby activity. Does anyone have a suggestion for a gentle but helpful online class that he could work on one day a week or so? Thank you.
  3. Hello All, How much work and how much time do you think a fourth grade boy (who is capable of doing lots of good work and reads above his grade level) should be doing? How little screen time should he have? I know replies will vary, especially on screen time. I will read the 4th grade threads later as that will be helpful, too. We are having issues with being too lax I think. I might need to consider some sort of online program to give him more structure and challenge especially for the day or two that I work.
  4. Hello! My daughter has more than 6 colleges and some she hasn't heard if she accepted or not. Can we do more than 6 colleges? What advice to give on ranking them? Any links or advice, info appreciated. Thanks!
  5. Hi I thought I would add DD acceptances so far: St. Scholastica Northern Michigan University Carthage College Ave Maria University Marquette University We are waiting to hear back from others. Nice to know she has some choices. Now it will be a matter of figuring out what we can afford.
  6. Thanks. Teacher mom, sorry one recommender wouldn't go back in and finish this for you.
  7. Hello, Our recommender thought he had finished but it says "started". Any advice on what he may have missed doing and what he should do? Thanks, Christine
  8. Thanks everyone for your replies. I have another question but I will start a new post.
  9. Hi! How does my daughter know if her recommender have uploaded their letter? Also, can we upload a letter for someone who wrote a letter for another college app but doesn't have time to do this step? Thanks!
  10. Thanks everyone for your replies. Yes, the school she is interested in offer more scholarship for that extra point. Not a ton but more, 6,000 over 4 years. At another school, a 30 will open up other options like honors. I consider this really her 3 rd attempt. The first of the 4 was just to get the feel of it. She only began geometry then and her math score was a 20. It has been 23 ever since. Her science score jumped from the previous test of 26 to 32. I think she is getting her momentum and can score higher. It is her goal to get in the 30's. I think we will look at a tutor for math and try some of the timing suggestions. If anyone has any suggestions for online material that may improve math skills those would be appreciated. She has done done many practice tests but will save a couple before her next and last attempt. Thanks
  11. Hello. Have the scores. My dd wanted to hit 30. She earned a 29. This was her fourth time. She has improved her composite each time. She had a 30 in English, 23 in Math, 31 in Reading, and a 32 in Science. She is so close as I realize they round up. She just needs 2 more points somewhere. She has not changed her math score in the last 3 attempts. She could just get another point in English or reading but if she could just improve in math it would be good because who knows if she would get a 32 in science again. So what would you suggest to move the math score? She finally finished the math but still makes errors likely on things she should get correct. Of course there is some she just doesn't know. Thanks!
  12. All 3 of my kids are very bummed for the upcoming changes. I might even go so far as to say they are depressed. :(. I am actually very concerned. If anyone has any advice...
  13. Margaret in CO. Toastmasters is a good idea. I think I will consider that for my next dc.
  14. Thanks Lori. Good advice. I should have explained that my dd does have 4 English credits. I really appreciate everyone helping me, even though I didn't listen. ;) hopefully, it will all be fine.
  15. Hi hive! Thanks so much for your replies. Psychology would have been a good idea. I didn't think of that. She already has Econ, gov and health. After calling Memoria Press and chatting with them a bit I decided to go with Traditional Logic, listed in the English section of her transcript. I know some of you advised against that but it was something I think we can add that will be reasonable to implement. Dd will spread it out over the remainder of the year for a half credit. I didn't have room in the electives section either. I hope it will be okay. I just wanted to give you an update. Thanks.
  16. Rats. I was hoping logic would count for English. That is my open spot on my transcript!! I can't move anything but I could maybe add something in the soc. studies. No, we don't want to pad it but we want it to be a bit better. She is open to whatever. We thought maybe the thinkwell public speaking course? Logic would be good for her.
  17. in either language arts/english or social studies/geography or maybe logic. Could traditional logic count fall under the english section of my transcript? Don't laugh at me. It is late.
  18. Anyone use this? Can you use it without doing a speech? Haha. Did you use it just with the videos or did you have the work book etc.
  19. So some have a fee on top of their application fee?
