  1. Lori D.'s post is great, but I'd like to issue a caution regarding My Father's World. I was going to buy the package, again, since I loved MFW in previous middle school grades. I became very upset, however, when I called MFW to discuss the structure of the high school packages. i.e. Does the Ancient History package represent 9th grade and can you just start at the next history level instead of Ancient. I was told that you had to start at Ancient History and go all the way through; even though I live in Texas and Ancient History, as well as History to 1877 do not count as credits for high school history and I would be throwing away those credits. One MFW employee told me that Ancient History was the 9th grade level; another one told me it was not considered 9th grade, but high school level. They both proceeded to tell me that you could not switch them up or leave any of the years out. So, you would have to use all 4 years of their program to get the full credits IF they coincide with your states requirements regardless of what grade your child is in. Needless to say we won't be using them again event though we enjoyed their elementary and middle school curriculum.
  2. Hello all, I'm teaching my 13, soon to be 14, year old daughter. The problem is she is making 100's on everything except science. In science she has around an 85 average. Is there a testing site or placement test I can give her to see if I need to boot her up to 9th grade level or more? I went to Keystone School online and downloaded their test, but don't know if it is an appropriate test for the type of testing I need. Any ideas? Bible History/Geography Physical Science Pre-Algebra Language Arts Reading from many books Spelling Latin Spanish Private Guitar lessons
  3. Okay, I decided on Apologia's Exploring Creation with Physical Science. I'm so excited and so is Kristen. I was able to find the Text, Test and Solutions, as well as the Multimedia Companion CD for $50 ppd. What a great deal! All I have to buy now is the Student Workbook.
  4. Thanks Cbollin! I will check out Apologia Physical, but to be honest she saw a book on Human Biology and wanted it so bad. I didn't get it because I was worried she would not have the basics down enough to understand it. Which book did you use for biology? You tube is a great idea. I forgot to add in the original post that we are also reading Exploring American History. If I feel the curriculum is too weak in any area I always supplement. I'm excited about dd memorizing the book of James. I'm so glad you have good memories of it!
  5. We will be using MFW Exploration to 1850 this year for our 8th grade dd. This is what we have so far to go along with it: English: The Shurley Method (mostly for the grammar) I already have the book and will use it unless PH satisfies my standards in this area. Prentice Hall Literature, Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, Silver Edition BJU Pre-Algebra Science: Still unsure about this! Ugh! Any ideas? Our dd loved science until last year. She was in public schools 1/2 year and the science teacher taught them 6th grade science. She lost all interest in it so I need a science that will really get her captivated again! Also, any ideas about a good book for using microscopes? She has a really great one and we haven't been able to use it since we don't know what we are doing! Ugh again! Latin: Not sure about which to use. She did English from the Roots Up in an earlier curriculum of MFW. That's all the exposure she has had. Any ideas? History: Story of the World, Vol 3, as in our MFW package, but I am including the Activity book as well as the tests. Guitar: Private lessons Photography: Private and possibly 4-H Spanish: Rosetta Stone Logic: The Snake and the Fox In the past we have enjoyed the suggested reading lists in the TE. We have tried to always read some out of each section or recommended for the chapters. This has given our dd a more rounded insight and a deeper education than just skipping them as being unimportant. Some have said that MFW products may not be challenging enough, but if you do all the suggestions you will find that it is not only interesting, but fulfills the questions the kids may have otherwise. You can make this curriculum easier or harder, depending on your style and what you choose to do with it. I have found it makes our home flow a little smoother and is such a pleasant atmosphere. It is centered on Christianity and that makes it a fit for our home. We, also, study the Bible more in depth than it calls for. Our typical day started around 8-9 am and would end around 3 pm. We also spent a lot of times outdoors with the previous versions and plan on doing that this year as well. You can always adjust your days to work for you...that's what I love about having the TE that does the plans and everything for you. We have used Adventures in My Father's World; Exploring other Countries and Cultures; and Creation to the Greeks. Our dd LOVED these! We only skipped Rome to Reformation to stay on track with Texas guidelines and they are working on the history line of Exploration to 1850 for this year. Blessings!
  6. I saw where you have the Kolbe syllabus for science. Is that something that lays it all out for you with daily plans? If so, where can I get that? Thanks!
  7. Chiguirre, Thanks for you post. I went to the TEA website and looked under Assessments for STARR. It shows science under 8th grade, as well as Reading, Math, Social Studies. This is why I thought science was required for 8th grade. Also, I tried to copy it all here, but I couldn't get it to copy. I must be doing something wrong. Anyway, you can go under STARR science resources and it tells you what is expected in all the grades. I realize some may not consider the STARR or TEA options, but I think they are important to at least monitor. Again, thanks for your post!
  8. I'm actually intruding here since my daughter is in 8th grade, not 9th. However, I know that you are the ones that have the hindsight of 8th grade, which I do not. You know what has worked and what hasn't in regard to preparing your 9th grader. I am at a loss about science. I was going to go with Apologia, but heard from several sources that it will not prepare the child for higher levels of science. Although I am Creationist in thinking, I have also been through enough college to know you have to learn a well-rounded view to succeed in any field of science. We already have a microscope and would love experiments and things like that. I'm just so overwhelmed with all that is out there and which curriculum would be best for her to be okay in 9th grade science. English, too, but y'all are discussing science...so... I've thought about getting individual books that cover select topics. The State of Texas requires: Matter and Energy;Atoms; protons; periodic table arrangement; chemical formulas; chemical reactions; diagram flow of energy through living things. I'm not sure if more is required, but I know these are. Any ideas?
  9. Hello, Wanted to let you know about Shurley English. I used it this past year for our 7th grader. I also used it in her lower grades. I feel that it is excellent in teaching grammar and writing skills. Really, just everything your child needs to know to succeed in English. It is so well rounded. They have jingles that they repeat before almost every lesson to reinforce their learning. There are question and answer flows that teach the structure of sentences. It seems to flow together nicely and is well constructed. If your child is struggling with English you may try Level 7 or call them and they will help guide you. I do know that Level 7 taught our daughter so much about grammar and writing skills. I believe they are coming out with Level 8, but not sure about that. They said months ago that they were, but I haven't seen it on their site yet. Hope this helps a little! www.shurley.com
  10. I am trying to decide if I should use MFW again as well. I love the curriculum, but don't know if it is challenging enough for our dd. I do, however, enjoy how the topics of MFW create an atmosphere of learning that is focused on God. It seems to have a calming effect and the material can help to refocus sometimes. I do supplement a lot.
