Regentrude, I agree with you that the beauty of scientific research is determining the sources of possible errors; however, how do I (the person overseeing the home school instruction) know what outcome to expect from a given experiment without an Answer Key? In other words, I am looking for a Calculus-Based Physics Lab (that includes an Answer Key), which can advance my child in a subject area that is not my expertise.

In response to your question regarding Answer Keys: I needed to compare the outcome of the experiment, which should lead to similar outcomes to the original. In other words, as you know, one of the advantages of scientific experiments is that if all the steps are closely followed, then the research will yield to the same results. Therefore, the Answer Key will serve as an asset to verify reliability.

MamaSprout, I used Quality Science Labs (QSL) for my daughter's 9th Grade Biology, 10th Grade Chemistry, and 11th Grade Algebra-Based Physics. However, QSL never created a kit geared towards Calculus-Based Physics. Cintinative, I'll do any kit that my daughter can use for Calculus-Based Physics. The issue is that I am very "weak" when it comes to sciences, especially physics. Therefore, I need something with an Answer Key. Previously, I put together my own lab and manual for Calculus-Based Physics; nevertheless, my oldest daughter (who is now a junior in college) advised me to make this course better for her younger sister because the lab I previously attempted to create was limited. Again, I just need a Physics lab kit, with an Answer Key. By the way, thank you all for ALL of your input (you have no clue how great it feels to have this community help me every time I face a dilemma).

They are under Science Interactive, which is the parent company of HOL Science and eScience Labs(https://esciencelabs.com/product-category/physics). Unfortunately, they told me to look somewhere else because at this time, they are not working with homeschoolers.

EKS, Thank you. Although there is no lab component, BYU Independent Study-Online is another great "on-demand" option that can be completed immediately if the student understands the material.

Regentrude, I agree that a college on a quarter system and has an online component, would be my best chance. The reason why my child wants it dual enrolled is because: 1) The first part was in a college setting during the fall term and 2) I do not know how this affects my child's college applications and final grade submission, but it is everywhere that this course will be taken at a college this term.

Tsuga, Apparently, I am not flexible enough with the cost and here is why: I found the course needed, and during the preferred time-period with Thomas Edison State University (TESU). https://www2.tesu.edu/course.php?CourseCode=PHY-116&sem= The problem is that the tuition is going to cost $2,100, on top of the lab kits and other materials needed. Sadly, this may be a bit out of my budget. Therefore, if there is an opportunity to take this course for $1,000, $1,200, etc., I would gladly pay for it. Besides TESU, the main issue here is finding an algebra-based physics II with lab course that starts now and finishes by the end of May.

Amy4X, I live in the New York Metropolitan area. I have about 10 community colleges within 45 minutes of driving. That number probably doubles within 1 hour of driving. Over the past 4 years, my child has taken courses in five of these community colleges. As a result, I am very familiar with the academic calendars of all these institutions in my area (including public and private universities) and thus, do see some courses that start the second half of spring. Unfortunately, no physics courses are offered during this short term. In addition, I really like your suggestion to change the high school graduation date from May 31st to July 1st. However, there are two issues with this suggestion: 1) Everything uploaded in the Common App states that she is going to finish high school on May 31st. I do not know how this change is viewed by potential universities. 2) There are a few institutions that offer the algebra-based physics with lab between middle of May to end of June; nevertheless, the first part of this course is usually offered during this early summer term and the second part of this course (the one we need) is usually offered during the middle to end part of the summer term (i.e., after July 1st).

Chiguirre, That course looks great (the method is perfect). I am going to look at the details to make sure that there is a lab component to it (the lab component is important for us). Plus, it is within my price range. But again, this is a great start to the search, thank you.

Mark, My child attended a live class last semester for the first part of algebra-based physics with lab and received a solid A in that course.

Hello Everyone, Over the past five or so years, I have browsed and lightly posted on this forum. I appreciate this community for sharing your stories, experiences, various educational philosophies, etc. Your numerous postings has guided me to successfully home school my child through almost four years of high school, and for that, I thank you all. However, it seems that I need guidance one more time from this community before my child finishes high school in a few months. For reasons beyond our control, we were unable to register my child (at our local community college) to the second part (i.e., semester) of algebra-based physics with lab. This is a course that truly interest my child and would like to take during the last semester of 12th grade. As a result, can anyone suggest an online algebra-based physics with lab course (they are usually four semester credits) that can be started now and end before June 1st? Its okay if the course is on-demand, express block scheduling, or any other self-paced methods. In other words, we are open to any suggestions. In addition, I am looking to spend anywhere below $1,000 on tuition. Again, your help and suggestions would be truly appreciated. I thank you in all advance.

Sebastian, No, I did not go back to them. I have a November 1st deadline to meet and my time is limited; therefore, I instructed my daughter to use the Common App. It is the first time going through the process; as a result, I'll leave the Coalition App for another year with another child.

JanetC, Unfortunately, my daughter is applying to various schools that require Teacher's recommendations. I guess she should just used Common App for all of the applications. Sebastian, Coalition App specifically said to resend the invites using "Other" instead of "Teacher."

Julie, Coalition actually allows my daughter to label her dual enrolled (DE) professor as Teacher. However, when the DE professor attempts to complete the recommendation, the Coalition system does not allow it. It seems that when the DE professor enters "ABC College," Coalition rejects it because it does not match the name of her high school (which is Home School in this instance).

Hello Everyone, I would like to know if anyone has ever used, or currently using the Coalition Application, instead of the Common Application. My daughter has a problem with the recommendation section. According to an email she received from Coalition, any recommendation she receives from her dual enrolled college professor must be classified as "Other," instead of "Teacher." I feel that this may be a problem once the application is submitted to the universities (they require recommendations from teachers and other recommendations are optional with the application). My daughter has always worked on both Coalition and Common applications simultaneously (just in case things like this happen). Therefore, should she just abandon the Coalition Application and just work on the Common, or should she continue to use the preferred Coalition App and classify instructor's recommendations as "Other?" As a result, I have a simple question: Should certifications earned, volunteer work, and membership to professional organizations be neatly included in the high school transcript or on a resume (that will be sent to the colleges)? Chiguirre, We are a very mixed family. It is interesting that governments and organizations define who can be considered indigenous, Hispanic, or any other ethnicity/race, which can be confusing. For instance, an African-American family adopting a child from Asia; is the child Asian or African-American for the college application? Moreover, someone whose family immigrated from Argentina to Brazil over 100 years ago; is the applicant still considered Hispanic or Brazilian after so many generations living in Brazil? Therefore, I am going to advise the college applicant to duplicate what I did when I applied to colleges (not to apply as a URM). That way, no one will be accused of taking advantage of the process. Swimmermom3, The reason why I considered not sending in scores is because my child will be completing an associate’s degree that was obtained via dual enrollment during the high school (home school) years. In addition, my child obtained a perfect GPA and considered not sending in the scores for only this test-optional school (American University). But as I mentioned above, I will talk to my child to send in all the scores, to all the schools. Thanks for your input.
