  1. Do you mean homework/problem sets for "daily lessons"? This should not be over-weighted - probably only 20-25% the rest would be quizzes/chapter tests/semester exams. The Regentrude testing method is a little tough for most students. I would spread it around a little more than that.
  2. If you don't care about Early Action/Admission then Spring Junior year for SAT (maybe June) is good. Since 11th grade usually has lots of AP tests and will be more stressful for my DS - YMMV
  3. my DS took the real PSAT in 9th grade because his charter school requires it (parents still pay) it was interesting to see but sort of a waste of time - 10th grade is a better time to start Also don't take the PSAT 10 in 10th grade take the real PSAT/NMSQT ^another un-needed CB product IMHO
  4. to identify areas to improve for possible merit scholarships
  5. thank you - I also have a 10th grader - last year ( 2014 when DS was in 9th) they gave % against all test takers and the 10th grade and below group
  6. "Perfect on a section is no longer 800. It’s 760." this is sort of stupid - 800 was funky number but it has been around a long time
  7. They don't even use EngageNY/Eureka as a supplement? (free to download and you helped pay for it) Handouts/worksheets don't cut it in my eyes. Taxwise you are getting gypped! My son's charter school here in AZ adopted EngageNY/Eureka for Math - they are fairly challenging but the teaching content is a little light IMHO.
  8. I don't think a whole Stats course is needed for the SAT/ACT. All that is necessary could be covered in a month or so. see previous thread: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/581283-covering-probability-and-statistics-for-the-sat/
  9. We used Foerster's Alg2/Trig book as a supplement. The author covers the Common Core topics (like Prob&Stats) and modeling as well (1999 copyright). One of the problems is that the hive should recognize that Common Core Math topics at the Middle School and High School are probably here to stay for a while and are a reasonable step up for many states. It is some of the goofy K-6 Common Core stuff that will probably fade away.
  10. When are you starting? Take an Algebra 2 placement test (many free online like Thinkwell) and just review any issues found before formally starting Alg 2. http://www.thinkwell.com/homeschool/placementtests/ http://keystoneschoolonline.com/high-school/curriculum/high-school-placement-exams http://184.168.83.81/Diagnostic/Algebra2.pdf http://www.putneyschool.org/registration/mathplacementtest
  11. Great - another Gov't program wasting talent. How many other jobs are below degree earned expectations?
  12. http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/resources/publications/carnegie-unit/
  13. New York State Common Core Regents HS Geometry topic weighting Congruence (G-CO) 27%-34% Similarity, Right Triangles, and Trigonometry (G-SRT) 29%-37% Circles (G-C) 2%-8% Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations (GGPE) 12%-18% Geometric Measurement and Dimensions (G-GMD) 2%-8% Modeling with Geometry (G-GMD) 8%-15% this would not be a "lite" course.
  14. "Course Reviews Mirza I 2 months ago rates this course 5 / 5 stars + Clearly and succinctly explained interactive lectures. Very innovative teaching methods. + Emphasis on completing exercises (doing) + Plenty of help if you get stuck on a exercise + Proofs offered (optional) + Highly recommend the course. Similar in form to Khan Academy, but more interactive and better executed " Looks like more than then Geometry from Prealgebra but less than a full course. What you'll learn How to measure angles, and rules for determining when angles are congruent How to prove and apply properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons How to calculate the areas of polygons, circles, ellipses, and other complex shapes How to prove and apply the Pythagorean theorem How line segments and angles in circles are related How to calculate the volumes and surface areas of three-dimensional solids
  15. also free - why spend a lot when the student is not very interested. http://allinonehighschool.com/geometry-2014/ IMHO If your student is not going to study a STEM field that needs a full Geometry class then you certainly could do a "Geometry lite" and gear it towards ACT and SAT tested topics.
  16. I would have him watch a lesson of the appropriate course (maybe what he is taking now) and see how he likes learning that way. Give him a couple of problems to do related to the video watched. https://www.youtube.com/user/derekowens
  17. did not see SI for 2014 score (9th grade) but 2015 scores were higher percentage wise scored 96 % Math 98% Verbal (I believe this is for 10th graders) We can work on that Math score.
  18. received email from CB and used that link plus previous account - had both 2014 and 2015 scores
  19. my son's B&M charter school uses the CK12 Biology text (currently taking) - they do not use any other CK12 texts
  20. I will probably wait until Friday to check.
  21. 1) Yes you certainly can if you cover all the topics. We are not rushing this taking AB first. 2 + 2b) A good Precalculus is the right choice. You may need to supplement if the DoDEA is not honors level. My DS also completed Alg 2 in 9th grade. I would not do Calc 3 in HS IMHO. Try Discrete Math or Linear Algebra. 3) Sounds good to me.
  22. What an interesting story. also http://ithacavoice.com/2014/09/cornell-expels-gives-100000-bill-student-application-dispute/
  23. How about using AoPS videos and Alcumus as a supplement? http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/videos
  24. 1) I looked at the Calc AB versus Calc BC distributions - wow 31% of AB takers got a 1. That is sad. 2) My DS goes to a public charter - they accelerated him into Algebra 1 in 7th grade - I would have preferred an Honors Prealgebra such as AoPS at the time. His Geometry class back in 8th grade was comprehensive but not that challenging and he is now worried about that. I had only supplemented him with Algebra, Trig and some Stats. He kicked butt on the AZ Algebra 2 EOC exam last year in 9th. 3) We supplement at home. We did part of the Great Courses The Art of Problem Solving with Zeitz over Xmas break. Back to school this week. I love the info I get from the hive. I was proud that DS15 was even reading stuff like that and thinking about. He certainly is maturing.
  25. http://www.scientificcomputing.com/articles/2015/11/rush-calculus-bad-students-and-their-futures-stem sent to me by my DS 15 ! This topic has been discussed before.
