  1. I am planning to attend this, and I am bringing The Kev, but I would like to know something about the workshops before I ante up the registration.
  2. Oh, my gosh. This is like my gas pump experience. This guy sounds totally nutso. He was trespassing, stealing, and in your face to boot. I have no idea what I would do, but I am not sure I would risk digging it up from his yard. I do know I would never speak to him again. And I would have mowed the daisy down, too!
  3. I say, "That's a boundary issue." If they don't get that, I explain and in no uncertain terms.
  4. It really is somewhat of problem, being face blind. If those pics had been of anyone local, I might not have gotten any of them, much less the two that I did get. Celebs would be anonymous around me, no need for sunglasses :coolgleamA:; even my heartthrob, Johnny Depp, unless he was in his Captain Jack getup.
  5. An article I read recently stated that children feel little connection to classic literature because of the strong presence of contemporary authors, who often appear in person or via media to discuss their books. The British Library's website was mentioned as an outstanding resource for reigniting the love for teaching and learning the classics. Here is a link: http://www.bl.uk/index.shtml
  6. This is a sincere thank you and :grouphug: to all of you for a wonderful first semester HSing. I was seriously terrified of taking Kev out of school at Christmas break. We had our ups and downs at first, but with everyone's suggestions, encouragement, generous sharing of experiences, and general helpfulness, it has been a wonderful experience. He has learned so much, and so have I... some of it was about ourselves. I wouldn't have missed it for anything. But, really and truly, I couldn't have done it without all of you. Thank you. And Kevin thanks you, too.

  8. I bought a wonderful binocular AmScope in December. I can make some slides, but you could never get the variety you could get with prepared slides. I am planning to order the 100 slide set.
  9. Oh my goodness!!! Will my golden Lab, Stella, be upset if I do this? I have never thought of it!!
  10. That is a great list of resources, but I like it for the opposite reason. Thanks for posting this. I think it will be helpful for everyone, not simply those opposed to CC, which I am not.
  11. I also wanted to mention that although I can't recognize human faces, i can recognize a huge number of dogs' faces, which I find kind of weird. If everyone would just hang out with their dogs as much as I do with mine, I would never have a problem, even if they had just had them groomed.
  12. I am seriously face blind. I got 2 right, also. I avoid a lot of social situations because of this. and hate when anyone changes their hairstyle etc. Faces appear to me as two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and some kind of hair. It's a real problem.
  13. I have always let my kids read at whatever level they want; they eventually fill in the blanks themselves.
  14. Putting myself in the place of your child, I would not be able to learn or to answer, if I thought a wrong response would bring a frightening situation on. My inability to deal with a strong and aggressive adult would have serious consequences, and not just on my education, but my whole being. Putting myself in your place, I would congratulate myself for being brave enough to ask for help. I would also stop schooling her, put her in public school for at least a semester, and get some counseling.
  15. We are behind, too. I am staying up working on a catch-up plan for summer. I am going to school for three hours a day, through the summer, then we are going to go swimming, do art projects, and have fun. I really don't think it is going to be a problem....the days are long and the fun is around every corner. The school year, for public school, is 180 days. I think that it is unlikely, considering all the time our local school wastes, that they do 180 hours of anything. Anything we do at our house for 1/2 hour every day works out to be about 180 hours a year. If we do things for an hour, for half the year, it works out the same. Therefore, I am doing an hour of math, an hour of literature and grammar, and an hour of science or history, all summer, and that should take care of a semester of whatever the school is doing plus some. Kevin will be caught up, I can stop feeling guilty, we will have lots of fun the rest of the day, and we can start the new semester on target.
  16. I spent most of my nursing life, before teaching nursing, so about 30 years, doing high-risk and critical care labor and delivery. Post-maturity in the infant and postdate pregnancy are not the same. About 5-10% of pregnancies continue past 40 weeks. The most reliable indicator for dates is an early ultrasound. There are many risk factors for postdate deliveries for both the mom and the baby: Maternal: doubled rate of CS, cervical rupture, labor dystocia, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, to name a few. Infant: stillbirth, neonatal death, septicemia, low Apgar scores, and many others.
  17. I'm sorry; that is just sad, and it's her loss, of course. You are thoughtful and loving, and heartbroken over the situation, which speaks to the kind of person you are. I am really sorry for her, and for your niece, who is probably getting the same lesson in what is "valuable."
  18. I'm kinda disappointed.....this was so interesting. When the possum emerged in the bathroom, he must have thought he had arrived in a strange and magical place...like Possum Oz. Fascinated by the bathroom, he just never thought of venturing anywhere else. A possum shows up on our front porch from time to time, nibbling cat food and peering in the side window, probably hoping I will invite him in to see the bathroom (which isn't much, but to a possum...maybe fascinating).
  19. My son started piano in first grade from a wonderful teacher who is about 10 minutes away. He is an amazing classical pianist, is composing music, and his teacher thinks he will land a scholarship, if he continues to play. He also takes French from a great French tutor, but I don't have to drive for that. Between the two, I would select piano. You can learn a foreign language many ways, but a gifted piano teacher is a rare resource, and the time is just right for starting him.
  20. I have had more than 150 foster children since 2005, and they almost always come with sleep issues, but they never leave with them. Everyone under 12 goes to bed at 8PM (big shock to some of them---the ones who stayed up half the night). Everyone over 12 goes to bed at 9PM. This includes weekends, because getting off a sleep schedule two days a week is not helpful with this issue). There are just no exceptions to this rule. It takes a couple of weeks, sometimes more, to adjust to this, but it works. I do let them have the radio on, if they must. That is all I do, and it works. Well, not quite all. I start winding things down an hour before (no TV, which is overstimulating just before bed), and no one gets a bedtime snack with sugar in any form. Also, I NEVER, repeat NEVER let kids have any drink with caffeine. It stays with them a very long time, and is a big enemy of proper sleep. (I feel like the Great Oz, who has spoken. Sorry :)
  21. I have raised four daughters, all of whom tried weird makeup styles while learning to do their makeup. They are all professionals, and they have beautiful (and super expensive) makeup. They look great. I didn't make this an issue when they were teens, I just tried not to gag. It's just makeup after all. And some day she will thank you and send you a Sephora gift certificate.
  22. My 10-year-old son does about three hours in the morning plus an hour and in the afternoon. He also does 15 minutes of piano practice every day, plus two hour-long lessons twice a week. He has chess for 2 hours once a week, and karate twice a week. (Hopefully, karate counts as having some PE). I sneak in extra lessons as often as I can: "Why do I have to learn grammar? What's it actually good for, anyway?" He seriously should not have asked that! In any case, I don't think the academics are enough. I would rather do four hours in the morning and two in the afternoon, but I think for fifth grade I am just going to do five hours. For summer school, I am going to do three, then we will go to the pool every day when he is done.
  23. My daughter and family live in Roswell and love it there. They have also lived in Alpharetta, which they also liked. We are planning on a move from Missouri to Georgia, but checking out the Athens area (go Bulldogs!).
  24. We have been foster parents in Missouri since 2005. We have never had a babysitter or a night out since then. We do take foster children on vacation, but we also sometimes take a vacation without them. The state provides 12 days of respite every year for them. Last year we went to a family reunion and left our foster daughter with another foster family for four days. We took one of our foster children to Disney World and Sea World, and took the foster daughter we have now on a family vacation last summer. It really isn't the vacations that pose a problem. You can take the children out of the state here in Missouri without a court order, but not out of the country, naturally. It is the day to day that is difficult, since every babysitter or caregiver has to have a background check.
  25. I love the tub in its entirity. I would be happy to clean it, clean around it, etc. I think it's lovely. Caveat, I am not a really practical person.
