  1. Mine is a bit inattentive ADD, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it, but I could start looking into that. Above someone asked do I know why. I've tried to talk to him about this and he just says it's hard to ask for help. I get that, but who is supposed to know how advanced calculators work without looking it up? Him, I guess. He's very techy, likes to figure things out but when the whole day is dragging on and there are 4 other subjects to do it drives me nuts. I guess I just need to let him fail a bit and figure it out.
  2. Please don't quote. My 15 year old is driving me up the wall. He thinks he is supposed to know how to do everything intuitively and refuses to even google anything let alone ask for help. Today's drama was about his scientific calculator. Won't search, won't read the manual, he thinks he should just be able to figure it out. He's always been like this with everything but now as school gets harder I don't see how he's going to get everything done if he can't ask even his online teachers for help. Anyone have advice?
  3. Anyone have some feedback to share on this class. Is it ok for a reluctant writer?
  4. Beast Academy tackles one topic at a time. ETA: it's working for my 2 dyslexic kiddos.
  5. Dyslexic 11 yo Ds is doing maintenance homework at home until we see the VT doc for a recheck. I'm so tired of him doing the Hart chart. The current exercise is the chart split in 4, put up on the wall and he is marching or on the trampoline reading out the letters to a metronome. We are suppose to tilt the quarters and this is to help with tracking. He gets so frustrated with it because it involves rapidly naming letters, which of course dyslexics have a hard time with. Will this ever improve, always be difficult but effective or is this a useless exercise for him? What has your experience been? disclaimer: we're not using VT to help his dyslexia, 2 separate issues.
  6. My son wants to learn 2D animation. Has anyone gone through a course or videos that doesn't use Adobe? I'd rather not keep paying month to month for the software at this point.
  7. Title says it pretty much. What other options are out there? Basically I am dragging me feet starting Level C with my 15 year old. I'm, fine with going ahead with it anyway and I would like to quickly move through it to get to essay writing, but I can see him protesting a bit with it. What else works that is pretty independent with just me checking his work?
  8. 3rd/4th grade reading level would be challenging for him if he is the one doing the reading, which would be good to double as reading practice. Audio is no issue with comprehension. I took it to mean the information is at a 6th grade level but written to be read at a 3rd and 4th grade reading level. Is this not right? I hope I am understanding it right
  9. I like the timeline idea or I could see him doodling something in a notebook. You're right I am probably over thinking and should just keep it simple.
  10. These look interesting. I like that it's 3-4 reading level and the passages seem to be short.
  11. We have Bookshare and I see the HO is on there too. I know on bookshare it's just a regular audio book I think. does Learning Ally have the physical textbook to follow along with visually as it's read outloud. What do you do to have your child show output? My focus with him so far has been the basics, reading, writing, math with lots of documentaries for everything else. I'm a little nervous requiring much more from him but know he needs to be challenged more now. Thanks
  12. I'm doing a trial of ReadSpeaker TextAid and really like it so far. They have a Chrome Extension for Premium accounts and/or you can drop text into their browser based reader. It also reads PDFs. Of course the voices don't sound 100% natural, but I haven't heard anything else better. The full version is $89 a year. Wondering if anyone has a review to share or something else to try before buying.
  13. Thanks for the recommendation. I need digital, video or audiobooks. I'm thinking that ds would be one who thinks it looks visually overwhelming just because there's pages of text.
  14. I put a hold on Young Indiana Jones at the library as well as the 2 History Channel documentaries. Hopefully with Khan that will be enough.
  15. Thanks. The site looks nice but I can't find the price. Do you know how much?
  16. I have tried some Great Courses and was told they are a snooze. Everything else seems so wordy. What are some options for middle school history/social studies. Has to be secular. We've tried SOTW and I feel it's not really secular. Thanks ETA: does anyone think Big History and Mankind from the History Channel with Khan Academy's World History would be enough?
  17. Just curious if your dc took Clover Creek physics and then took the SAT subject test how did they do?
  18. I just meant they have a school search lookup feature on their site https://ordering.collegeboard.org/testordering/publicSearch I just want to make sure I understand this right, sorry I am pretty new to figuring out this high school thing So they can take the PSAT in sophomore and junior year, but only junior year counts for scholarships, is that right? Is there any disadvantage if he takes it sophomore year and does bad. I just want the first year for practice.
  19. Would any private schools be listed on the college board site or should I just call any and all? My district is blue ribbon, I think I might be the first homeschooler they have dealt with.
  20. I emailed the guidance counselor at our local HS about my 15 year old taking the PSATs. I think this is the first time they have dealt with this as no one homeschools here. She said they are not an official testing site so that brings in the issue of insurance to have someone not enrolled take it. It took a while to get this answer and now May is ending. Will I still be able to sign him up somewhere? And where should I look? I though our district was the only option.
