  1. Hi, yes I did get the subscription. He is still moving through it. Some parts are frustrating for him but he is severely dyslexic. He likes it overall but gets stuck on some parts. The mnemonic tricks they teach for spelling do help out a lot. At the same time, I got Brainware Safari from the Homeschool Buyer's co-op to work on working memory. This child had over a year with a dyslexic reading tutor and it just got too pricey for us. He also had vision tracking issues separately that we needed to do vision therapy for. Basically, reading problems can be one of several things, or more than one in our case. So an evaluation is the best way to go. Have you gotten your child's vision checked? You can find a developmental eye doctor at covd.org
  2. I think I first got the recommendation for EIW from you. Do you use their scoring services?
  3. Last year was a bad year for us and we are playing catch up in some subjects. It's my fault and I know this is less than ideal starting 10th. He didn't get much writing done and needs some remediation. I picked Essentials in Writing but chose level 8. I know he is behind and the usual advice is to get a tutor, but it doesn't seem feasible right now. He is stealth dyslexic with writing and spelling being the main issues. After looking through many programs this one seemed the best fit. Should I have him do EIW 8 double time and then use something else the second half of the year? If so would Jumping to EIW 10 be ok and enough writing? Or would you recommend something else? The rest of his English credit is half year of Dystopian Literature through Online G3. Would I need to add something for the second half of the year to make it a full credit? I have Art of Argument here and would like to use that at some point.
  4. The practice tests online have a score conversion worksheet in the answer section https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice/full-length-practice-tests
  5. I'm thinking about just printing practice tests and having DS do the PSAT at home for 10th. Is the main benefit of doing them at a testing center that they get the standardized test experience or is there something else?
  6. Came here to say Goodreads too. Usually the most popular reviews are very in depth and will be right at the top.
  7. The CS class looks great. I am going to keep it on my list for next year. Are they free to or encouraged to email the instructor if they are stuck with the coding?
  8. oh no! Thanks for the feedback Well we haven't signed up yet. Kind of doing things in a different order b/c my son is finishing up VideoText for Algebra 2. I was hoping to pick up the pace and start Geo mid year so he can be on target for pre calc in 11th, so I'm trying to think now what is self-paced and might be quick(er) to get through.
  9. For a kid that is solid in math, would it be possible to finish up Derek Owens Geometry in about 5 or 6 months? thanks
  10. Essentials in Writing has a scoring service that you can add on. https://essentialsinwriting.com/level-10/ I'm just trying out this program this year so I am pretty new to it. There are samples on the page to see if it's what you're looking for.
  11. My 10th grader is trying out a literature class on Online G3. I don't really know if he is gifted but I liked the line up of reading for their Dystopian Literature class. So far he is keeping up fine but I don't really hear any feedback at all from the teacher. I know they don't give grades but does anyone have an idea what I can expect as far an evaluation or feedback while the class is ongoing? Is not getting replies from the teacher on forum posts to are about class topics normal?
  12. I haven't read through everything but saw that you tried the trial of Nessy. I just posted about Nessy looking for similar advice. I don't think a program that puts spelling and reading together and won't let the child advance in both if there is an issue in one is a good fit.
  13. I have the same question. Did you go ahead with it?
  14. Thanks both. I'll pass that on to try -ur first. I found that Nessy has some worksheets to go with the program so I'll work on getting more of these words memorized.
  15. My dyslexic kiddo is stuck on Nessy. He cannot get past the spelling challenge for -ir and -ur. He is ok with -ar -or and -er. He can read words with r controlled vowels fine. He says Nessy doesn't give any tricks for spelling, which it usually does. We use Apples and Pears for spelling and are at the end of Book A and it doesn't have these words yet. I doesn't look like -ir and -ur are in Book B even. I know it's a bit confusing using 2 programs but Dancing Bears, the reading side of AP, did not work out for us. Any tips or tricks to share? Thanks!
  16. A little. He won't return my hellos or speak to us. He sometimes scrolls on his phone outside my house for 30 minutes before delivering mail. Not creepy but not really professional. Well to update I did call. I took all the advice into consideration and decided in your 30s and 40s maybe it's way past the time to have gentle conversations about where to relief yourself. I should add across the street there is a little no man's land of trees in between two houses that he could have easily parked his truck against and had privacy. He knew he was in full view of anyone on our street. They said they would have a conversation with him as "that's a no-no". He's been here, just not parked in front of my house. The Uber stories shared are scary!
  17. Whoa! That is scary, I would be worried about writing anything online too.
  18. I'm so grossed out right now. I watched our mailman, who parks in front of my house every day stand on my curb, urinate on his truck and then grab his bag and start delivering mail - starting with my mailbox! I will for sure be spraying that down with Lysol. I am worried about complaining b/c he'll know who I am. Do you avoid complaining when someone will know where you live and might lose their job?
