Barton with previous OG tutoring
summerreading replied to summerreading's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
I got level 1 used but it's ok b/c my youngest is still using it. Oldest with previous tutoring is also a VT graduate, so I'm confident about his vision being ok. His spelling improved with Nessy. I did the post tests for Barton and he's be in 3 with his reading above that level. I think I'm going to go ahead and continue with him but not hold back writing and reading comprehension anymore. Thanks, your questions helped me figure it out 🙂 -
Would you use Barton differently with a child with previous OG experience? My 12 year old has been tutored and been using Nessy. He passed the screening and we went through level 1 in one week. If he was already up to spelling rules with Nessy should I test him of level 2? Would you even bother with barton for a child who is reading but needs help spelling? I suspect dyslexia with my youngest so I am buying the program anyway. Thanks

Programmable robots
summerreading replied to summerreading's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I just looked it up, it's so cute! Did you own a 3d printer? -
Does anyone have a recommendation for a robotics set that is challenging for a teen to code? We are finishing up Vex competition season and I'm looking for something he can hopefully incorporate into a coding elective. Thanks

I'm looking for any feedback. Thanks

Thanks I will check them out. Well I checked out Aldis and the only one not fish, at least at my store, was turkey. Nothing wrong with that but one flavor will get old fast. I don't want to give my cat fish too often. I am worried about mercury build up. The first ingredient just said "meat" by product so yes I guess that could be anything. For now I'm going to stick to Stop & Shop's Nature's Promise wet food and look around for some other brands to rotate through. Thanks for all the replies.

Any opinions on Aldis wet cat food? The first ingredient is meat by product, not appealing to me but I don't think my cat really cares about. I'd like to try it out because the price is nice.

How much do you use Learning Ally?
summerreading replied to summerreading's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Good to know. I think we will give a try. So each book has several narrators? Do you find that distracting at all? Yes, this is where we have it from. I could tell just going through the introduction that it was going to be hard to get through with Voice Dream. -
Thanks for the replies. Maybe I didn't use the right word, but he describes himself as "not really social", he is fine with family and groups when he needs to be. I can't help but compare to myself as a teen. I had a group of friends and they were everything to me, maybe too much. We tried out a group activity today and he said it wasn't bad and he'd go back again, so I'm feeling a wee bit better now.

Can we discuss asocial teens? I have an introverted teen who says he's just not really social. Has like 1 or 2 friends he sees once in a while and he's not really interested in making friends. He also doesn't even like to write on online class messageboards. I'm trying to nudge him here and there but wondering what's the right amount.

My first attempt with Bookshare and Voice Dream narrating The Human Odyssey was a flop. I cannot imagine listening to 25 hours of that voice. We did go through all of them and it still doesn't sound natural enough to not end up zoning out to it. I looked into Learning Ally but it doesn't seem they have that exact textbook. Is it worth a subscription? How often do you use it? Any recommendations for a middle school history text on LA? Thanks

The VT doc usually checks visual processing b/c all my kids still do reversals. I'm so confused by this because isn't that aspect caused by the dyslexia? I'm kind of skeptical about her testing for this. The right/left exercises were torture for my middle son and very little progress was made. He still reverses the usual culprits: b,d, p, q but usually fixes it right away. Thanks for the tip for the extra tiles.

Yes, thank both. We are going to a developmental eye doctor. My middle one had tracking issues and is profoundly dyslexic at the same time. I'm soooo hoping this one will just need glasses! a weekly VT bill is just not what I need right now but it is what it is. I think you are right Peter Pan, AAR is good who it is good for. My middle son is not advancing as I would like him to currently using Nessy after a long stint with a reading tutor. So most likely I think we are going to get Barton anyway. Good thing for that good resale value. ?

I'm currently using AAR with my (newly) 9 year old and while he is advancing in reading, I'm a little frustrated with it. It feels like it moves too fast for him like there is not enough material for each new topic and not enough review. Is it fully OG and is it sufficient for a dyslexic student? We are at the end of AAR 1 and I am trying to decide if we should switch to Barton and start all over or continue on with AAR and find things to supplement. I suspect dyslexia but I'm starting with getting his eye checked this week (he rubs them and says they hurt). Can anyone who has used both explain the main difference between them? One plus for Barton would be that my dyslexic husband never had any remediation and we could use it with him. If you have any input on using with an adult, I'd love to hear about that too.

DS is at the end of Module C for VideoText. He has been chugging along without asking for much help and seems to understand it, but lately is getting stumped on word problems. So I am thinking about trying out Teaching Textbooks since I'm thinking something just isn't getting explained well enough. I have always heard the opinion that TT is "too easy" but then found some reviews saying their kids who used it are studying math at college and doing great. What is your opinion on TT Algebra 2 for a student who will go on to higher math? Is it too easy (whatever that really means) or is it solid? Or if you use VideoText any thoughts on pushing through the remaining modules? Thanks

I got BtB Spanish today and it seems a bit intimidating for us. It looks like a very solid program if there is a teacher that is a native speaker and you are going through it with a group. Is there something that goes a little slower and that my son could do on his own? We do have Spanish speaking relatives that he can practice with, but I'd rather that be casual and just to try out his pronunciation. Thanks!
