  1. Oh- no special method of organizing. I do make quarterly tests, but that is because I want my dc to have experience with test taking. If I did not I would simply test them verbally. This method of studying vocab is kind of a reflection of where I am as a homeschooler: what we do I hope we do well yet we won't do it all as no one can.
  2. I use what I am guessing would be a college- level dictionary. Yes, I just go in alphabetical order starting in about grade 3/4. I forgot your other questions, so I will go back and check!
  3. I am still hoping you will share a list of inaccuracies from the remainder of the OIS text.
  4. Unless the parent is editing? That's what I do and I feel comfortable with it. I would not just hand the text to a child to read. Sonlight sees some of SOTW as inaccurate, and some of the Hakim books as politically unbalanced, so they provide editing notes for parents. I guess I just assumed we all do this to some extent . I edit YEC science to reflect an old- earth view point, for example. It seems kids ultimately take the perspective of their family of origin despite what a school text may impart. Just kind of thinking out loud here.
  5. We read the dictionary. Any word they can't define out loud goes in their vocab notebook. They then look up and copy the definition. I started this because my dc didn't 't actually understand many words, though I thought they did.
  6. I have yet to find a history text I am comfortable with in its entirety. As an example, I have never read a text which gave- in my opinion- adequate coverage of the horrid injustices suffered by the native population ( for decades. )Other topics that I find I must cover outside of a text would include the dust bowl, factory conditions, women 's lib, the depression, the civil rights movement, the Khmer Rouge. It seems hard to capture the human experience in a text. I seem to need photos , primary source docents, video footage. A text is simply a starting point. Oh- Bill- did you have that list of inaccuracies from OIS?
  7. I think that is something each parent has to decide individually. For some it is fine, for others not. I am fine with it for the reasons given a few posts before, and also because of the explanation provided in the Teacher's Notes link.
  8. Thank you! That's just the kind of info I was hoping for.
  9. I know there were some threads about how the two programs compare, but I can't find them! Does anyone know where they are? Or do you have thoughts about the two? I am just trying to decide between them. Thanks!
  10. Go to the link 'Teacher's Notes' up thread. I have no idea what SWB's take on this is, and I am guessing no one feels comfortable sharing. I still haven't had that question answered despite having asked several times. Regardless, the Teacher's Notes link provided all the information I needed. May help you as well.
  11. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
  12. When we read it it was obvious to us that the author was starting with a myth. I hope you can share inaccuracies you've found from the remainder of the text.
  13. We are getting ready for another move also. I greatly reduced the amount of clothing each of us has. I didn't get rid of the rest, just packed it away. Each child has three play outfits, three better outfits, and three church outfits. Two pair pajamas. This has helped so much.
  14. Would you please post a list of the inaccuracies? Thank you
  15. Bill- just curious- have you read OIS in its entirety? I have no desire to debate. Simply wondering.
  16. Would you share your thoughts on better history only approaches and also elaborate on what you mean by 'science of relations'?
  17. Would anyone be willing to share what the concern might be r/t vintage history books? I am aware of issues such as racial prejudice. Again, I am not able to listen to the lectures. My dd greatly dislikes SOTW, but loves reading the encyclopedia- strange!
  18. I agree- I would really like to be advised of anything about Island Story. I can't listen to her lectures on my phone.
  19. Mater Amabalis doesn't go through high school, and I don't think Michelle has plans to take it further. It has some great book suggestions, though!
  20. Do any of you have thoughts about AO's history for all years? I am considering using just their history plans as I'd like to move away from using so much historical fiction. I think my only hesitation is the emphasis on British history. Thanks.
  21. Yes, down to page number. I've learned I have to do this to school successfully. I don't a assign page numbers for math or beginning reading.
  22. Oh- and I prefer using them with grade 3 and up. My more independent student gets the most out of them.
