  1. That's interesting. Do you feel like a "right answer" is based on your personal values, family's values, society's values or something else?
  2. Ooh I've never heard of the lighthouse model before but it's a good one!
  3. Oh I forgot to describe the list! So in a very simplistic nutshell Tigers- value success and accomplishment above all else Dolphins- value success and accomplishment balanced with the well being and happiness of the child. Jellyfish- let the children be free to be who they are and do what they want Elephants- Value relationships the most. Does the child feel safe and loved?
  4. Of the animal models ( tiger, dolphin, elephant, jellyfish, ?) what kind of mom do you consider yourself to be? What kind of mom do others consider you to be? How has this affected the way you educate your children? I'll go first 🙂. I see myself being a mix of elephant and dolphin, but I suspect others see me as a jellyfish. What this looks like educationally is the early years everything was play or snuggle based. Dd's preschool life was filled with children's museums, aquariums, story hour, games and anything we could do while we snuggled. Now she's in a whole child charter school that values recess and teaches mindfulness along with the three R's. We after-school using audio books, math songs, and snuggle fest read alouds. The dolphin side shows up with the daily 30 min instrument practice and her preprofessional ballet class (both activities which she chose and likes but doesn't have the work ethic to pursue without my support). I think others see me as a jellyfish mom primarily because of my gentle discipline style. I focus more on relationship building than punishments and corrections. It helps that my Dd has a compliant and rule following personality so it's super easy to be gentle. So now it's your turn 🙂 Oh I forgot to describe the list! 5. Huh, I must have read a newer edition. The edition I read sited specific studies, told how big these studies were, showed who conducted the studies and if they had a vested interest in the outcome. It also discussed why people consider these studies valid or not. I was impressed.
  6. Oh here's another one. Me and the two girls my husband dated before me all share the exact same birthdate. I remember the shocked silence that followed when he asked me when it was.
  7. These things happen to me mostly when I'm playing games for some reason. I was playing a trivia game with friends and I knew almost nothing about sports or old time actors. The question showed a picture and asked who was standing next to Marilyn Monroe. Suddenly the lyric from Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs Robinson" starting singing in my head "Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you". Yep, it was Joe DiMaggio. Once during Taboo, a game where you try to get the other players to say a certain word, my sister was up. She read the card and I immeadiatly blurted out the answer. No words, looks, or gestures were exchanged. I was in a high school history class and we we were playing Trival Pursuit, boys vs girls. It was a close and heated game. The game was tied and the very last question was for the girls. If we got it we would win. Our teacher looked at the question and said "Oh you aren't going to get this one," then he read the question - " What is the capital of Nepal? " A week before then I had watched the Disney movie "Night Train to Katmandu" with my family. Everyone was floored when I gave the winning answer and all the girls cheered.
  8. This is facinating! Thanks for sharing. I was wrong Lilith is mentioned in Isaiah 34:14. She is included in a list of unclean/ demonic animals.
  9. This makes sense which would explain why it is possible to grow up in a predominately Judeo-Christian society and not have heard of her.
  10. I can find no evidence of Lilith in the Bible but I do see echos of the Lilith/ Eve dichotomy in the stories of Hagar and Sarah- with the key difference that Hagar's independence was thrust upon her. Also in Martha and Mary- in that Martha's work was away from Jesus (a male) where as Mary's was to be as close as she could to Him. It's interesting to note that the Bible seems to treat its independent women more gently than Lilith was treated. Whereas Judaic lore demonizes Lilith into a baby stealing hag, Hagar was cared for by the Lord and ultimately made powerful as the mother of a strong nation. While Martha is oftentimes made (unfairly in my opinion) into the example of what not to do, a hag she is not.
  11. I really love your take on this. It's something I'm going to have to think more on. I say Eve was sweet and motherly because when the carp hit the fan Eve's reaction was essentially "Adam come join me" while Lilith's was more of a "peace, out". Eve worked to keep the family together while Lilith realized it wasn't worth saving.
  12. What are your thoughts on Lilith , Adam's first wife according to Jewish tradition? Is she a figure created by a patriarchal society to warn women against the dangers of independence? Is she the natural counterpart of sweet, motherly Eve -the yin and the yang? Perhaps all women posess a little bit of Eve and a little bit of Lilith in their natures? Do other faiths encorperate an archetypal Lilith figure in their belief systems? Is she someone to embrace or abhor?
  13. Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I'm going to think on how I can apply them in my day to day life. It's an interesting thought that dicipline vs motivation is the key. I like the idea of small goals and doing it for health and longevity. Pain is rotten and my heart goes to those living with it. I'm off to look up the books Spark and How Not to Die. 💗
  14. What motivates you to do hard things? I've been trying to lose my last 20 lbs for years now. For most of my life I've been waifish. I was always motivated to keep off extra pounds because I basically hated myself and the only sense of worth I had was in my physique. But I've healed a lot and now my sense of worth isn't tied to my weight. But with fertility treatments and hormone imbalances and pregnancy I'm not at an ideal weight. The problem is that now that my self loathing is gone so is my motivation. Ha! I tell myself I should do the things I need to as an act of self love, but man that chocolate cheesecake always seems to win. So what is it that motivates you to put down the proverbial cheesecake and pick up the proverbial dumbbell?
  15. Roast up some peppers, carrots, onions, and tomatoes and purée them into a sauce. Brown some ground turkey and add the sauce plus taco seasoning. I like to eat this on top of a baked sweet potato. It feels like comfort food. Fajitas- sprouted corn tortillas filled with grilled onions, peppers, and seasoned chicken topped with guacamole . Yum! Veggie soup- favorite veggies cooked in bone broth served with an opened faced ham sandwich (on gluten free bread) heavy on the mayo heavy on the mustard. I usually eat the same thing for lunch all week long. I do all the prep work on Monday so it only takes me 5 minutes to assemble or heat up.
  16. I tend to emphasize with people so I usually see merit in both sides of an issue. I sometimes wish that that I could see the ideal world of the two opposing sides. What would a conservative utopia look like and what would a liberal utopia look like, for example. Mostly I wish that people would come together and tackle the issues we can all agree on like human trafficking, disease and hunger.
  17. So this is my .02 :). First, guilt is to the soul as pain is to the body. Second, all of our souls are perfect beings of light and good. After we die all that we had said, thought and did, that had fallen short of the perfect light and goodness of our soul will manifest itself as guilt. This guilt is not heaped upon us by our loving Father but is the natural reaction we have from not living up to ourselves. This is why we need a savior, because really don't we all fall short of perfection every minute of every day? Jesus has taken our guilt from us. Now this is where my beliefs differ from universal salvation. Doesn't a person need to at least try to receive this gift? Doesn't a person need to love the good and peaceable and light? Shouldn't a person strive to reject the ugly, small mindedness, greedy, and harmfulness of this world. I say yes. And I believe it's less about what you believe and more about who you are and are becoming. So the Atheist, Buddhist, Pagan, or Christian who is doing good, embracing love, bringing light in this world and becoming closer to who they really are is receiving Jesus' gift. The ones who embrace hate, who hurt, who trample on the weak, those who love evil, they are rejecting Jesus' gift. They will be the ones who will feel the full force of their guilt and that is hell. As to how long they will experience this hell of their own choosing I haven't the foggiest. I like to think that they will eventually work through it and find the peace and love and light that comes by turning towards Jesus. Edited because of so may typos Edited to create paragraphs.
  18. So I use the roll on magnesium type then the Toms 24 hour. If I don't apply them both then there will be stinkage.
  19. Oh thank you for your explanation. It is then a deeply religious name.
  20. Oh, a friend just named her baby girl Penelope. They call her Penny which I think is adorable.
  21. Tabitha is the Aramaic counterpart of Dorcas but I like it too much to call it gross. It is sort of old fashioned sounding though. Millicent Augusta Octavia Dolores which means pains in Spanish. I don't understand naming beautiful bouncing baby "pains" Josephine Wilhelmina Eustacia
  22. Quote - "Yes, and I worry that there are enough expectations I don't have that teens have traditionally rebelled against, he'll dig deeper to find something he can push back on. That's kind of scary. Sometimes I wonder if that is an issue with a lot of teens with a contrarian nature. They're to expecting to break through walls their parents put up, and instead find this wide open, agoraphobic space of acceptance... so what now?!?" I've know some rebellious teens from very liberal households go the opposite way and become conservative. Ha! ( ala Family Ties) Edited to figure out how to quote.
