  1. Thank you for these - I will show him the more formal classes for music theory. Taking the AP class in a few years would be great. That's a great thread! The Coursera class through Berklee could be just what he is looking for! Thanks so much for all this information and suggestions. There are several ideas and classes I can share with DS that will help him learn more and see where this interest goes! It has never been anything we have looked at for him - he's been an architect/engineer boy since he was little. This fits in with his skills and interests, just never saw it going this direction. I have a feeling studio equipment will be on his Christmas wish list this year
  2. B12 is easy to try and low b12 can show itself in lots of ways! On your sedentary days, can you walk in place? Or do you have to be sitting? I have a mini trampoline that I like to walk on when I'm walking in place. My DS has lower blood pressure and a slow heart rate. He has to stay VERY hydrated. Lots of water and lots of salt. A slower heart rate can also be a hypothyroid symptom.
  3. That is overwhelming. I like the idea of paying a teen. They could help with the iPad, do some laundry, basic cleaning. Send out a request with a group text or on Facebook. I hope you can find some help! Care.com might be another place to find someone to clean and help with laundry.
  4. DS is a freshman in high school with a wide variety of interests. He's always explored and self taught - from Lego to Rubik's cube, to photography, to video making. He has a need for creativity and his latest interest is what he calls "making beats" - basically playing with music software on his Mac - for hours every night. He is taking his first piano lessons this year and he has a good ear. He can peck out songs on the piano, and now with some piano lessons, he can peck them out with chords too  . He taught himself a good bit of music theory this summer via youtube videos, etc. He is a smart kid, and is a very fast learner when he's interested. He currently is interested in music for a career - is there hope for someone getting into music at this age being able to do that? Not singing or playing - more toward producing. He plays the music for me, but I know NOTHING about music so I honestly have no idea what to make of it! This could be a fading interest like the others before it, but now that he is getting to the age where he might consider college plans and majors I'm wondering if this is possible?
  5. I joined Weight Watchers a few weeks ago and these seem to be all the rage. Does anyone here have one? I hate to buy another kitchen gadget on a new diet whim, and of course everyone on the WW website think they're great. But how about in "real" life? I've never heard of them before - does anyone have and use one? https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Airfryer-Original-HD9240-94/dp/B00TR78QUI/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_79_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MK5ZEQ3NKQKX05JRS7P4
  6. I like jojoba oil too. My wurst area is around my eyes and I can use this without any irritation. I think retina a might be your best choice though. With a prescription from your doctor it's almost the same price as over the counter anti-aging lotions with better results.
  7. My family owns a small business. We average 75 employees. Our premiums went up 20% last year and 29% this year. It's crazy. We continue to cover as much as we can but have stopped matching 401k contributions in part due to these expenses. That makes me sad. It's a no win situation for everyone. The small town I live in offers 100% paid health insurance coverage to all government employees. And just implemented an increase in sales tax.
  8. Poor guy! Maybe a heating pad or hot water bottle? My DS always liked to sit in a warm bath.
  9. What is the format of these? Are they similar to other AOPS classes? Are there videos?
  10. My DS has always been in PS, but he started high school this year and is running cross country as well. It is a quirky and smart bunch at his school as well. It's been a great help in adjusting and being a part of his new school. Glad your son is doing so well!!
  11. Thanks for the replies. Il going to try to not use the fitness points. I've tracked before on MFP so I know my weaknesses - hello chips and wine. I need to get back on track. I honestly just chose weight watchers for the connect success stories. It's so motivating to see those. I can definitely see how the fruit thing could be an issue. Those calories add up. I don't eat a lot of fruit except an occasional smoothie. Sugar in general isn't an issue for me really. I did see somewhere that fruit in a smoothie isn't zero points but I'm not sure how that would work? Yesterday I put in the ingredients and frozen berries were zero. Not sure how I would track those differently?
  12. I just started and am only doing the online version. I'm sure there is some debate on whether or not it works :) but my question is - do you use your weekly points and/or activity points? And did you still lose weight. 30 points doesn't seem like a lot. I am trying to eat a lot of vegetables and I do eat a lot of fruit which while not counted as points, does have some calories. Just wondering how it went for other people using the weekly points? Some people say they are built in to use, but others say they try not to use them. And what about activity points? I have a 53 point goal, but I don't understand how it got that number? Anyone ever try to calculate how many calories 30 points really is?
  13. WE are trying to help someone who is trying to raffle off an item with all the money donated to a sick child's medical care. But we are having a hard time finding a nonprofit to run it through. Does anyone have any experience trying to do this without it causing a tax issue?
  14. The brands I got from Trunk Club are good quality brands. I have owned all of them before and they hold up well. They are washable. As for why I only kept three- she sent me 2 jeans, 2 skirts, 3 shirts and 1pair of shoes. Jeans are hard- I only liked one. I said what I liked in skirts and one was too similar to what I already owned. If I needed two skirts I would have kept both of these. The shirts were kind of a let down. I said I needed low neck or v neck and I do not like the cold shoulder look on me. Only 1 shirt met my requests, and I kept that one. There were two shoes in my original box and I would have kept one if I didn't already have ones very similar! You can't see the replacement ones or I would have vetoed those before they shipped. So in my case, I guess I already have some good clothes. If I were really revamping my wardrobe I think I would have kept the other skirt and a pair of shoes. I will put in a plug here again for Get Your Pretty On blog and shopping challenge. It's $39 for the shopping list and Facebook group. She has online links to 3 or 4 of each style in all price ranges and everything mixes and matches. The ladies on the private Facebook page post their outfits everyday and it's really helpful to see how they are wearing things. There's a wide range of ages and sizes on Facebook and lots of good ideas. I think the fall challenge opened today. It works really well to put together a capsule wardrobe and wear things from your closet in new ways. I've done it the past every other fall and I think that's why I have a good variety in my closet already. http://stylechallenges.com/product/fall-2017-gypo-style Edited to add link to GYPO style challenge.
  15. I got one today too. Nordstrom is my main go to for nice clothes so I was interested in what I would get. I got brands and clothes I had bought before but in newer styles. I kept one shirt, one jean, and one skirt. If I went on their website I probably would have ordered these exact things:) I left very through feedback though so I'm hoping next time I order one maybe they'll be some better matches. Price wise FYI the jeans were $68, the shirt $59 and the skirt $59.
  16. I have recommended this site before, but I think she has some great vegan recipes. You might find something that everyone would like. She especially has some great cookie desserts that everyone would like. http://ohsheglows.com/categories/recipes-2/food-entrees/ I would think the taco bar would be easy to separate into vegan components. I eat meat, but I prefer red lentil taco filling to hamburger meat. Pesto pasta is a pretty universal meal and can easily be vegan. A vegan tomato sauce pasta with Italian sausage on the side. Steaks with all the veggie sides - especially roasted veggies in olive oil.
  17. I agree, it is mostly diet. You can't out -exercise a bad diet. Has he tracked his food intake at all? When I track mine, it is obvious to me what I am doing wrong. Not easy to fix, but easy to know. On the exercise part though - it seems to make a faster difference in body image, and body composition that motivates me to keep it up. Plus, he might identify as "strong" and not "fat". I don't remember all the backstory, but does he sneak food? That's a lot of weight for someone that age. A lot of extra calories if he doesn't have a medical condition making him gain so much weight in a year. I know anyone who has struggled with their weight will understand how hard it is. Teen boys are not immune to body issues.
  18. As someone who has needed to lose weight for the past 10 years, I agree - get him a personal trainer. It's the only time I've been successful. They know what to do, you work at the right level for you, and the ones I know are truly passionate and motivating. They give you expertise, motivation, accountability. I hate it for your DSS. It's no fun, mentally or physically, worrying about your weight!
  19. It is different for every school in our county. They are not financially supported by the school system at all. Individual schools and parents are responsible for the costs after getting permission from the county.
  20. Thank you all for the good advice and suggestions. I am reading up on them and following all the rabbit trails. It is exciting to think about the possibilities, but I need to get into action in some way too. I have two directions out in front right now - education and psychology. I am very interested in neuro-psychology - the testing part, gifted and special education, etc. I could also see myself doing academic and college counseling, And of course, teaching. They all involve a decent amount of interaction with people. And I don't know where I stand with that. I am an accountant now, and I really love accounting as a skill. But I have moved up into a controller type position which calls for management, dealing with outside sales people, etc. It's a hassle, and I don't like it at all. But I think that's burnout too. And zero passion or interest in the whole thing. Anyway, I think there is a common thread through these ideas. So, I am looking at the options of Masters in Education vs the fast track to get my teaching certificate. It is a much faster, easier, cheaper route to get the certificate, but I'm not sure if it would be better to get the Masters and open up a lot more possibilities in the long run. I've got some good friends in the education area, so I am going to pick their brains a bit on that. Maybe I'm really an INFJ? my interests seem to be business and counseling at this stage! I'll have to see where I fell on those two parts. I do enjoy financial consulting. I do that a good bit for nonprofits and am good at that. I just don't want to be involved in the nuts and bolts of accounting anymore. Edited - removed sentence for privacy.
  21. I switched shampoo lines a few years ago to Davines. It's pricy, BUT, my hairdresser talked me into trying something that has made the biggest difference- not washing it every day! I bought a high quality shower cap and some Drybar dry shampoo to use on the roots as needed. I now wash my hair 2-3 a week. The product lasts longer too. I use pure jojoba oil on my face every morning and night. She also told me to eat more good fats and take an omega supplement. I do eat a lot of chia and flax, but I still need to start the omega.
  22. As part of my mid life crisis :) I've been researching and pondering a second life career. I've been looking at teaching, but I'm afraid I'm not being realistic about what the daily grind would entail. I like the idea of big picture education, curriculum, education psychology, but those seem to require classroom experience first. I like the idea of making a difference in some manner. I am not interested in technology or engineering which seem to dominate the job lists. Any INTP or INTP spouses that love their jobs? I have taken the test several times and over several years so I'm pretty sure it's accurate. I definitely see it in the work aspect.
  23. We were only in 87% and it was awesome. I'm so sad I didnt travel to 100%. DS just started high school and didn't want to miss. I think he wishes he would have now. I will travel to see total in 2024 if I'm still around.
  24. It is safe to watch it in selfie mode on my iphone right? It's like watching it on any other screen and it won't hurt my camera? right? I'm seeing so many opinions, and NASA hasn't weighed in on this one
