  1. How does your DS feel about the possibility of being in a class with kids several years younger?   If he's OK with it, then Chemistry & Physics would be fine for a 7th grader.

General Science could also be OK, depending upon how the co-op class is run.  I taught General Science at a co-op last year and I did not administer tests or give grades (I left that up to the parents' discretion).  I did give assignments for weekly reading, OYO questions, and study guides.   We used classroom time for experiments, learning how to write up a proper lab report, discussions & videos relevant to each module, and reviewing the study guides.   A dyslexic student would have been fine in my class, as long as he could keep up with the reading assignments (or listen to the audio CD of the textbook, which is available from Apologia).  I had a couple of students who came to class each week, participated in experiments, but never did the study guides (and I doubt their moms gave them the tests).   One girl in particular had a mom going through chemotherapy, so I had no issues with the fact that she never did any written work.   She did show up for class and I think she got something out of the class even without doing the written work.

So if the General Science co-op is being run in the same way, your DS could potentially do fine.   But if you feel like he might not be ready for Physical Science the following year, maybe he'd do better waiting a year for General.

The GS class will be doing discussions and labs in class. The reading, OYO, tests etc. will all be done at home. I think he would benefit from the class and I know the teacher well and she will do an excellent job. I can see either class working for him at this point. I just keep wavering on which would be better and need to decide soon.

  2. I have not used KWT but I have attended the teacher training workshop. It looks like a great program for a classroom and I really wish I could get my school to switch over. That being said, it is designed for use in a classroom. To get full benefit from the program, you will need to have a "teacher" account to manage your child's account. There are teacher directed lessons available that are do not show up on the student portal on stuff like internet safety and netiquette, and it included ideas for, ways students can practice keyboarding skills in a classroom where there apis not one computer for each child. One bad thing about it is that it is purchased as individual licenses. One license must be purchased per student per level per year. Once a student has completed a level, it is finished. The student does not have access to the level indefinitely to repeat lessons or for additional practice. It is only good for one year (I can't remember if it is calendar year or school year) once the time period is up, it has to be paid for again to continue even if the level was not completed.

In the long run it may be more cost effective for only one child to purchase software that costs more but you have access to as long as you want.

Thank you! I wondered why it was so inexpensive. Makes sense now.

  3. I think that book is fine for 7th grade. It wouldn't concern me personally too much if the class was younger. My dd does science with 5th graders and up too. For us, co-op generally does the experiments and discussions about them. We do the reading and bookwork and additional experiements at home.

My dd did that text in 6th grade and did an even younger science book for 7th grade actually, the new Wile series book, Science in the Age of Reason. She will do a public school text for 8th (with a grade level of 6th on it) as her general science before doing Biology in 9th. We have never done the actual General Science book. We have done the Physics, but it isn't in the line up for the current kiddo.

Thank you! We will do the reading and questions at home too. Class time will be discussions and experiments.  He does have a few friends who will be in the class so I am sure it will be fine. I can beef up things at home if needed.

  4. If you were going to do the book at home I would say absolutely, not too young for him. But, I would be concerned in a co-op situation about what age range the other students were going to be. If the other students were mostly lower elementary then the teacher would probably bring it down to their level and it could feel too young for your son. If there were going to be other students in the class his age then it would probably be OK.

We skipped General Science completely. DS went from the elementary books to Physical Science then back to Anatomy (which had just come out) then onto the High School books. We never did the elementary Chemistry and Physics because he was already into the High School sequence by the time it came out.

There will be mixed ages in the class but most seem one to two years younger.  It is a concern for me that the teacher will need to bring the discussion down for the younger kids. I really think just doing it at home would be a good fit but his sister is signed up for a different class at the same time and the only options for him are these classes or study hall, which he would hate. I couldn't blame him there.

  5. I have a 12 year old with dyslexia who is entering 7th this fall.  I typically put my kids in General Science at this point but I don't think he is quite ready for that.  I am considering Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics for him instead. My concern is that the course would be too young for him. Our co-op is offering both courses and I just don't know which would be a better fit. Thoughts?

  6. We do it 4 days a week during the intensive part (10-17 weeks depending I the year). We don't do every exercise. We do all the sentence analysis, a couple diagrams, all of the "identify the job this word is doing in the sentence", and none of the paraphrasing. In the reinforcement season we do it once a week, about half a sheet each time, again no paraphrasing and only two diagrams.

We'll start season two out of three this fall.

About how long each day does the above take?

  7. You can use Fix-It without starting on book 1 since you've done so many previous programs. I'd give him their placement test and use that as a guide. We use it and can get through multiple lessons in a week- we do a whole "week" per sitting and squeeze it in as workload allows. There are review cards in the back as well. I've never used AG, so can't speak to that, but we've been very happy with Fix-It. Dd doesn't dread it, so I take that as a good endorsement. :)

    Thank you!

  8. I am looking for a one year grammar review program for my son. He has done R&S, CLE and another program that I can't remember at the moment. It seems all the grammar studying he has done isn't spilling over into his writing. At this point I have narrowed my search to either Fix it or AG but I am open to other suggestions.  I think we could get through AG easily in a year but I'm not sure how far we could get in Fix It. I know the first few books might go quicker but then we would need to slow down.

Any suggestions or thoughts on these programs? Thanks!

  9. Oh, I see.  You are wanting to add writing and grammar to Barton?  Sorry, I'm slow.   :)

We used IEW coupled with Fix-It Grammar here.  I wish I could give you feedback on WWE with FLL.  I haven't used them with my dyslexic kiddos.  Hopefully someone else can chime in with better knowledge.  Good luck!   :)

Thanks! I'm not sure what I want to use at this point. I have used IEW in the past and we didn't love it but I know it's recommended to use with Barton's.

  10. What level of Barton is he on and are you using the fluency drills and other support material available to tutors through the website? You may have mentioned this in the other thread so I apologize if you did but I can't recall.

We are on the last lesson of book 4. We do use the support materials and he is doing well! I would not call him fluent as in he still reads slowly but we're working on it. Just not sure where to go next as far as writing and grammar. We have not done anything in addition to the Barton's.

  11. My upcoming 7th grader is dyslexic. We are using Barton's and he is finally getting it but not fluent by any means.  I am considering WWE and FLL for him this coming year. I used these with a few of my older kids and we enjoyed them but it's been a while so I can't remember if it would be a good fit.  Anyone else use these resources with your dyslexic kids? I could scribe for him and he uses google docs with voice to do writing now. Thoughts?

  12. He went through all 10 levels and still struggles with spelling and is not fluent in reading? Maybe I am not fully understanding your post.

Did he have any evaluations? What are his strengths and challenges? Sorry for all the questions. Not sure what to recommend without a fuller picture.

He reads well and fluently. He still struggles with spelling though when he is doing written work.  He did have a full neuro-psych eval when he was 12.  His challenges were a lower than average IQ, slow processing and working memory issues. He was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. He has come a long way since then and does fairly well in most of his subjects at this point. He loves to read history related books, go figure  :001_smile:

  13. We're finished with Barton's and he reads fairly well but still struggles with spelling. I think he just can't remember the rules. I'd love to do a quick review of all of Barton but I don't think there is a simple way to do that. He's older and wants to just be done. Part of me thinks just allow spell check and be done with it too but I'd really like to spend this next year focusing on improving as much as we can in this area. Any suggestions?
