  1. After 9 years of homeschooling, I'm throwing in my hat (for now) and enrolling my 5 school-age kids into a really good charter school next year.  At this point I feel like they will get a better education there than what I am able to give them.  We'll see!  I'm sad and excited.

Hugs. You did amazing things for your kids and you are willing to change as they grow. Major respect for you in that--many, many people are too lazy or rigid to do either.

  2. My DD is arguing with me that pi is not an unending nonrepeating number. Because, you know, her 6th grade brain and reasoning skills are obviously superior to centuries of mathematical geniuses and thought.

Well, that is actually a pretty compelling argument for a middle-schooler. That's a great use of abstract reasoning. for her age. She might have a future in philosophy or analytics!

If only this particular generation of middle schoolers had been born earlier. We literally could have solved 100% of the world's problems.

Except for, you know, putting the dishes in the dishwasher. That's too hard.

  4. So if I am having a hard time getting my daughter to do her math lesson because she is making hexaflexagons and thinking about patterns do I consider that a success?

If that's not why you homeschool, I don't know what is. I'm not always jealous on these boards but those two posts make me jealous!

  5. If you eat brownies in really tiny bites, they have fewer calories.

Of course, because the calories escape as you break them into tinier and tinier pieces.

  6. When a public school counsellor attempts to talk down to me because they assume I don't know how the school system works and what they're responsible for, it takes the patience of Job to remain civil.

They talk to everyone like that, because everyone misses just one thing, and that reinforces their belief that everyone is an idiot. (I work in education and my kids are in PS and they still talk to me this way.)

  7. I am a wife and homeschooling mom of 5. We have been homeschooling since 2007.

  8. Just told ds11 he isn't allowed to practice piano for more than 20 minutes. Had to set the timer for when he needs to stop. My mom never had that problem with me...

I can't bear to do this. My daughter did her mandatory practicing at 10 p.m. one night. I can stop a doodler, a tester, a joker, but I cannot stop an artist. Which is why my family will never be rich!

My friend heard from her DH when he was helping their three year old go potty: "Yes son, every time. You have to wipe your butt every single time you poop."

  12. Now I don't know whether to get myself 2 days at Peace Hill Farm B&B or a Vitamix (PHF is cheaper). What a lovely dilemma.

  14. Our parents surprised us with tickets to the Pac 12 Championship and a Hanukkah trip to Maui!! Sans children!!! Steve and I haven't been on a vacation alone in 7 years. Wow. I am still in shock!!

  15. Passports are sure expensive these days especially for kids who will need them again in five years.

"And the requirement to have both parents present but then not offering evening & weekend hours is super-frustrating." As a divorced mom with an ex-husband who is from overseas, I too find this frustrating... but comforting.

Gasp! I missed it (we are booked through Sunday). Glad you got to see it.

  18. First scolding from HOA. A neighbor ratted me out for putting out trash 5 hours before approved time. Shame on me.

Sorry, to add, I just saw your point about loving your home. I hope this is a one-off for you and that you can enjoy your beautiful home.

That is why we will never live in an HOA. It's literally on our list of things "not to buy" with the agents. Blech.

My kids had a coach like that. He was ridiculously good looking and also, an older teen in his senior year, so body of a [very athletic] grown man.

  21. Just overheard my 3yo ask her sister, "Are animals real?" Homeschool fail.

    1. Tsuga

      Tsuga

I'd call it a success... she's thinking about how things seem real in her head but they aren't. Lots of three year olds aren't at that meta level yet. She sounds bright.
