  1. Where did I bash all public schools? I merely said it was wrong to tell a parent what their child could and couldn't eat with a little flare by creating an imaginary scenario of what life would look like if we followed the line of reason that "voluntary" federal govt programs have the right to decide if parents can give a child a packed lunch. I mean really public school is voluntary or this forum would have no reason to exist. I didn't know this was a place that required facts to consider different opinions. I hadn't seen a citation of resources by any posters anywhere to represent their opinions. Well at this point, citations would be a waste of my time as you aren't really looking for the facts or you would have found them already, but I leave you with some enlightening documentary and a TED talk. completely unrelated to the topic...well, is anything unrelated really? probably not, but maybe you will see that I am for all people. Maybe taxes collected from the people and used by the federal government could pull out the giant stick from its eye before pulling it out the speck of dust from a poor man's eye or lunch or whatever? (interesting to say taxes fund federal programs with a government shutdown and a climbing debt ceiling...hmm, I guess we are all wrong...maybe the ones financing us are better suited to choose our needs...hmm, China, and who are the others?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pktOXJr1vOQ
  2. An interesting theory. If I cared about blog traffic, I am smart enough to woo you, but I don't care. I am not everyone's cup of tea, and prefer interesting conversation. I happen to think it was interesting situation. I don't mind anyone's opposing views. Of course, it is typical to deflect from conversation by proposing such questions. It might make others arguments stronger or not depending on the individual. Hey, if it works for you, I say go for it. Question away. ;)
  3. I knew I forgot something. Where did I put my pharmacy meds today? ;) (A Pleasant sarcastic and humorous tone to be inferred.)
  4. Haha, who is enraged? Seriously, I am not. Who says govt interference is something to be enraged about? One can choose to insert their emotions on my posts but I am not enraged. Humored mostly. Just because it isn't my cup of tea doesn't make me enraged. One can see things differently without feeling angry. "My house, my rules." That's the same logic used against the natives or was it? ironic either way, isn't it? That one can be possessive over a building, land, child or an organization and therefore decide the rules. Is it right or wrong? This I do not know. I have my suspicions. (To leave no one guessing of my current tone: it is ironic, dry, calm, apologetic, without judgement and reflective).
  5. Sorry I didn't address all the good points. Thumbs up to all the good points. There were too many to quote them all, so a general thumbs up to all. Any point is a good point as it is part of the journey to finding the allusive truth. ;)
  6. Why is the word socialism taboo? Mentioning it doesn't mean I think it is bad. That is just an assumption and it certainly is not one that I made or implied. Remember I live in a gray meadow. We have lots of socialist laws in the US, and I am not opposed to them all.
  7. I thought the federal govt received taxes to pay for their programs making them obligated to respect parents' rights to pack a lunch. Interesting...I didn't realize how wrong I am, and programs that target the poor...well the poor are too stupid to know what is good for their kids. Plus, Volunteering for a program is definitely grounds for forfeiting ones right to pack their kids lunch or any parental right. What was I thinking....I concede. You win. Since all public schools receive federal funding, a petition is needed to stop packed lunches. Our govt has the right to end this atrocity and we need to encourage them to take it. Pop tarts and soda...what was I thinking? Removal of corn subsidies is definitely needed. We need to stop supporting bad parent choices with federal subsidies. In fact, a tax should be added too to all products that are bad for our health. That way the tax is voluntary just like preschool. Alright this just turned political, so I concede for real. Rules are meant to be followed. Really, who is right and who cares? My kids aren't going to preschool so it doesn't matter to me, and I don't buy pop tarts, corn syrup and soda anyway so bring on the taxes. If my logic is flawed, I apologize. That govt education forgot to teach me logic. Darn them. We need to fix that. I humbly beg you for grace.
  8. I am fascinated by the love for govt intrusion. More power to you all. This is very interesting. I didn't realize so many were for such things. (How naive I am.) I think govt intrusion over diet is a very good reason o homeschool but that is just me (certainly not my only reason). Hey whatever floats your boat. You probably have your valid points. Socialism, communism and capitalism all have some good points. (Don't try to guess where I stand. I will tell you. It's a gray meadow). (*lalalaladeda dancing in my gray meadow blissfully).
  9. I thought I would share this. I thought it was amazing when I read it. I hadn't seen anyone share it here on the forum. It is just one more reason to homeschool. She got a note home that said no more packed lunches without a dr's note. Later in the comment section she said she was going to get a dr.'s note. I was disappointed. I don't think she should comply at all. I would have sent a box of poptarts and a soda the next day just to prove my point, but that is just me. I like to be funny in a not so funny way. But seriously I wouldn't comply. I would show up everyday to watch my kid eat their packed lunch. I have read in other places that some pre-k's do this for allergy reasons. Is that a good enough reason? here is the link: http://www.my2crazycurls.com/2013/10/10/wait/
  10. My 5 DS is at a second grade level on most things. He is using Mammoth math. He has a love hate relationship with it. I think it's becoming too repetitive, and for the first time, I started cutting out some of the problems. This has made my DS happy. 20 minutes on MM 10 minutes on abacus 10 minutes writing with ease 5-10 minutes on spelling on a customizable app using webster spelling book as our word list 10 minutes BFSU science 10 minutes of grammar 20 minutes in logic, preprogramming, and memory work using a variety of apps 10 minutes on Spanish 10 minutes on Chinese Lots of reading. He is really into learn to draw videos on YouTube, and I don't limit this activity. That is pretty much our normal day or ideal day. Ironically the summer was filled with ideal days, while Fall has been a bit more relaxed. I always make sure math, logic, reading and spelling get done but everything else fell to the side recently as I have been distracted (guilt free) with my own projects. I did get back on track today. Go me!
  11. This is a personal project I am working on and I was told the meter and flow needed improvement. I am hoping some people could give me tips on meter and flow. I think I understand after doing some research. Here is the original work, and then the next part is modified. I eliminated the first eperson POV as was suggested to me. I made it a ten syllable rhyme if that makes sense. Thanks for any expert help. first version Come meet my magic friends. Each pair always equals ten. Their silly magical potion is so very potent. The pair 8 and 2 put on a silly hair do and throw in a size TEN shoe. The pair 7 and 3 work as a team and throw in a TEN foot tree. The pair 9 and 1 have some fun and throw in a TEN ton bun. The pair of 5s toss in golden hives while TEN bees flee for their lives. The pair 4 and 6 stir with sticks and out pops a TEN legged tic. I hope you had fun with my silly magic friends and remember that each pair always equal ten. second version In a magic den, meet some number friends. Around a cauldron each pair equals ten. The pair eight and two put on a fun do and throw in a large, smelly size ten shoe. The pair seven and three work as a team and throw in an enormous ten foot tree. The pair nine and one have some silly fun and throw in a hot, massive ten ton bun. The pair of fives toss in sweet, golden hives while ten scared bees flee swiftly for their lives. The pair four and six stir with knobby sticks and out pops hideous ten legged tics.
  12. My friend had great succes with this program, and I had success with a similar program from multiplication.com. I think visual mnemonic devices work great with visual children. Memory trainers and champions across the world use similar techniques. There is something to building an exaggerated visual memory. It just sticks faster and better. I wish there was something like it for add/sub.
  13. What grade level do you feel the Scratch book is good for?
  14. I like grammaropolis, and YouTube is filled with fun clips from different sources. You can create your own playlist of video clips based on your needs on YouTube. It is pretty easy to do.
  15. "A Ring of Endless Light" is by far my favorite, but I love all her books. I can't wait to read some of her books to my kids. A Wrinkle in Time is patiently waiting for them to get a little older.
  16. Dance and sing to short phonics songs on YouTube and have no expectation for results. My daughter loves the I dont know game. I believe it is just a mischievious game and I love to not ask her anything. Its when I dont ask that she tries to beat me to the answer.
  17. This is all very intetresting. My DS hit his head on his bed jumping around, and he came to me saying he didnt feel well. I let him sit beside me but told him not to go to sleep or anything in a joking manner. My DS is always hurting himself but gets up and keeps moving within seconds, so when I looked over and he was asleep (in the middle of the day) I panicked. I took him to the ER and they acted like I was an over reacting mom. But my high energy DS was all sleepy on the bed at the hospital. I kept saying it wasn't normal. My DS was fine but sleepy for a few days. The attitude of the hospital was like it was no big deal or anything to worry about and sent me on my way. Nothing ever resulted from it, but I understand the feeling of the hype. You dont want to be a bad mommy but sometimes there is so much hype out there that its hard for you to hear your mommy instincts. To fear or not to fear that is the question. Hope your DD feels better.
  18. I love my apple leash. It is so beautiful and sparkley. But have you seen that phone with the awesome camera? i think its a windows phone. The camera is just amazing! well, the commercial sold me. the zoom was amazing.
  19. It sounds like maybe a working memory issue. Playing games like Simon or something of that nature that builds up how much her memory holds up at one time would help. A memory building game that focuses on listening would be even better. Name one object and have the child repeat. Add another object to the sequence and have the child repeat the entire sequence. Continue to add to the sequence until the child gets it wrong. Then high five her for gettting so far and try again another day.
  20. This may or may not be for you, but it works for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3J_O2q2BOM
  21. where in the world is carmen san diego? It is just $5.99 on amazon right now for all 40 episodes but some reviews said the quality wasnt that great. not sure if it would be a great DVD for the car, but a cheap solution? i loved the series when I was a kid. I found the board game a while back. Can't wait until my kids are old enough to play this game so I can relive my childhood.
  22. With MM1, I use manipulatives heavily and I write the answers when they get tired. They like doing the lessons but not the writing. my daughter likes to write more than my son. As tempting as it was we didn't skip a problem, and I am glad we didn't. My son is on book two and doesnt need manipulatives anymore. He does the problems in his head and has most of his math facts down. My daughter has been slowly going through MM1 now. What is important about MM (IMHO) is the sequence of the problems. Use manipulatives heavily if that is what your DD is comfortable with, but trust the sequence and number of the problems. Make math a game and tell the problems in a story format. Don't feel obligated to a page a day if that is too much.
  23. I love how so many are advocates of lowering cleanliness standards. I feel so at home. One time my 2 year old pencil drawing stayed on the wall for over a week. I just embraced it, and my hubby is great at getting the kids to clean the house. My five year old boy cleans the toilets and my 4 year old cleans the sinks. The five year old hangs up his own clothes. "The Self Propelled Advantage" by Joanne Calderwood was probably on the most mom empowering books I read recently. She has a great perspective and raised a lot of children too.
  24. I have a 5, 4, and 2 year old. I use high quality educational programming like "Meet the Phonics," "meet the Sight Words," and stuff like that. I also use short, high quality video clips on YouTube. Young children pick up things fast if its quick and fun. All the kids will enjoys these video clips together and learn together. Why spread yourself thin if you don't have to? you can sing and dance along with them if you feel left out. Check out my playlists on youtube if you need a place to start. i tried to organize them to make it easier to find the best of the best. There are a variety of counting lists, phonics, audiobooks with words, shapes, colors, spanish lists, and spanish audiobook list. youtube.com/pushplaylearning I have a youtube addiction so I highly recommend it. We love Salsa too. For math, get the marshmallow math book. It is full of games to play to start teaching math concepts to early learners. It helps you see that you can make math apart of your life style and then you wont be stressed out finding ways to fit it in. count and add at bathtime. count and add snacks. that kind of thing. I also understand being bothered about formal school by a very social child, but children are easily impressionable. Through television and daily life they get this glorified version of public school. All I can say that its a tricky situation. I am still trying to figure that out.
