  1. Thanks for all of your help! I'll take it all into consideration. :)
  2. I would take any, but I am more interested in either kung fu or tae kwon do. I want both the combative power and the beauty (especially in the kicks).
  3. How can I learn martial arts online for free? I saw there are series on ehow, but I'm looking for something that will help me despite my ineptitude. AND I know there is no replacing the real thing, but I have no money right now, and I just want to experiment a bit, for fun, and then maybe take it to the real thing. And yes, I want to get it right so that just in case I do eventually take lessons, I don't have to unlearn everything I learned.
  4. I apologize for the sexist comment - it was meant more as a joke than as a serious expression of my assessment of male intelligence or skill. I happen to come from a religious background and believe in the traditional roles of men and women and find it funny how feminism has made so much of our society believe that men and women differ mostly due to sociological conditioning.
  5. As any master of the kitchen knows, there comes a time when cheesecloth becomes a necessity. Hmmm, where to buy cheesecloth?! Being an internet freak, I tend to look online rather than local. I've been told that http://cheeseclothfabric.com is excellent... can anyone corroborate that? Ladies, please (if you are a man, don't even think about replying! ...sorry if that sounded sexist :))

    ..

I'm thankful to be alive, to have the opportunity to make my life better, for hope, love, and laughter.
  7. Personally the most honest answer I've heard is that everyone is different. Some diets work for some people, others work for others, etc. You just have to try different things, and of course, work out plenty.
  8. If you have any other questions about Judaism, I'll be glad to field them :-) (not to convert, just so that for once people outside the faith will actually receive an accurate view on what goes on in the inside... we are very misunderstood... as Kierkegaard said, "I am so misunderstood, even when I say I am misunderstood, they don't understand."
  9. Here are some sources for you: Isaiah 58: "and you shall establish sabbath as a day of pleasure" - not necessarily food, but certainly could means so. In the Oral Tradition, the Talmud, Tractate Sabbath, 117b, states that one is obligated to eat three meals on the sabbath. This is codified in the Jew Legal codes as well.
  10. I'd be very careful. Parents can get very touchy when you mention their kid might have a problem, especially if they aren't already aware of it. You might try casually mention the idea of kids and porn and see how she reacts. If she is cool with it, obviously raising the issue wouldn't be advisable. But if she remarks about how terrible it is, you might want to cautiously explore how to diplomatically advise her about what you hear her son is up to.
  11. :) Sorry. Thanks, I've heard people say that. Who knows what to believe... I guess I should try everything until I've got it.
  12. Horrible. Labor? Gas is one thing, but labor??? I'd keep an eye on him, if I were you. Ugh!
  13. Anyone have a surefire way of getting a six-pack quickly? I've been working on my abs every other day with results, but not with a six pack. I've been doing it for a month and a half, and I'm basically slim all over, with a small belly. Is it also the diet? Any help? I do crunches, decline sit ups, cocoons, plank, the "air-bike"... what else?
  14. First of all, yes, trying to deal with disciplining kids is really frustrating. There is a great book by Rudolf Dreikurs, a classic, actually, although I don't remember the name. He distinguishes between punishment, logical consequences, and natural consequences. Punishments are random threats to keep the boy in line, with no connection between the misdeed and the pain you will inflict (like, if you don't be nice to your sister, I will take away your video game). Logical consequences are those that have a logical connection (if you don't do your homework, you can't watch TV, because work comes before play). These are better than punishments, which should never be used. The best are natural (if you don't pack yourself lunch, you will go hungry). Of course, consider going to the other extreme - bribery. (if you play outside for an hour, I will take you to ____, or give you ____). It often works far better. When I was a kid my mother wanted me to get out and go to a day camp, and I refused. She didn't let me near the computer. I held out, and so she offered to let me play six hours of computer if I went to camp! I accepted the bribe, and I loved it! (both the camp and the many, many hours.)
  15. No, not at all. In today's day and age where creativity rules, you need to be creative in parenting as well. Look for and even develop your own scenarios for your children to socialize. Bear in mind that kids have varying social needs.
  16. No, but not because of homework, but for the child's emotional and psychological development. It is far better that the child has one, maybe two, areas of excellence. In them he will feel successful, competent, perhaps learn discipline in order to master it, and special-ness. Being spread all over the place is only helpful if perhaps thereby he will discover his passion.
  17. Forgive. Do you only love him when he does the right thing? Would you want someone to dump their relationship with you because you have a serious flaw in your personality, that isn't between you and that person? Unless what he did is so disgusting that you want nothing to do with him, that's fine also. We all have our own moral sensitivities, and it is noble to live by them. It really depends a lot on the details of the story and your personal feelings concerning it. Good luck.
  18. Common sense. There are lots of bad guys out there. I would recommend having your daughter take self defense classes. Probably being in excellent physical condition from hockey, in a mere few months she could be kicking some serious male predator ass. And just having the presence and confidence that comes from knowing you could, will scare off most potential assailants.
  19. Some people have this disease where they think they are really a different gender. A man might think he is really woman, and a woman might think she is really a man. Some people think that is normal, but it really isn't, because G-d created man and He created woman, and He knew what He was doing just fine.
