  1. I wouldn't, but it's easy for me to say because it isn't in our budget. I've seen this many times in friends and relatives. I think they're making foolish choices. HOWEVER I've also been chided by certain friends and relatives about the things I do. Like quitting my professional job to stay home with my dc. Or having so many dc. Or homeschooling. I spend so much money on curriculum . . . so much more on books in general . . . I'm pretty sure they think I'm nuts. Maybe even that there's something wrong with me. :D As long as you aren't being asked to support her decisions with your finances, it's none of your business. (Even though you and I could agree!);)
  2. You think like I think! It's a hard job, but someone's got to do it!
  3. I've been looking for a justification for buying this, and this price helps. That and the fact that our newspaper had announced it won't be printing daily in the future . . . My order history says: Shipping soon. Thanks for the enabling!:D
  4. Someone posted that her dr prescribed yoga and I can't remember who it was. I wanted to find out which type was most helpful for her. tia
  5. Dh wants me to pick out a nice watch for our anniversary. :001_smile: I've narrowed it down to a couple because of features I like and a brand I admire. One has diamond accents on the bezel and it's SO pretty. I've never had anything flashy and I'm surprised this one is my favorite (so far). But then my practical side warns that this will be harder to maintain than the second runner-up with a plain polished bezel . . . I wear only one watch. My babies are older and I don't do diapers or much laundry anymore . . . I don't garden or build . . . I have a part-time professional job and I attend church regularly. I read and write and work on the computer. I'm not rough on things, and I think at this point in my life I'd really enjoy something so fine . . . If you've had gemstones on a watch bezel, how did you feel about them years later? Did you lose stones? Did they snag your clothing? Catch dirt? tia P.S. Almost every year I've received a book or books and a nice dinner. I'm excited about something I'll remember and use everyday.
  6. I made an online order for a "used/like new" binder-planner through Amazon Marketplace. The description said it had monthly and weekly undated sheets. I'm an educator, a homeschool mom, and a student, so my year starts in August. I enjoy summer planning. :D The item arrived and it was not undated. It is for 2012, so half of the pages are useless to me. In addition, there are no weekly pages. I wrote to complain and ask for a partial refund since I'll have to buy a refill. I specifically said I did not want to return the item unless I could get a replacement. The seller sent apologies and stated that they do not have a replacement available. A full refund would be issued when I return the item. Then I received an email from Amazon stating my refund had been processed for the "defective" item with no return instructions. I want this planner! I just didn't want to have to buy additional pages for this fall . . . WWYD?
  7. We moved to NC when I was in 3rd and my brother in K. At that time the school's teachers taught in pairs. The K and 1st had "open classrooms" but I'm not sure how teaching duties were shared. Db had 2 teachers. For 3rd and 4th (when I moved away) the teachers split duties on one or two subjects but kept their own class the majority of the day. Back in Alabama, we had one fourth grade teacher and then one fifth grade teacher for all subjects. 6th grade was the move to middle school and separate subject teachers. You didn't ask, but I think the separate middle school -- especially for 6th graders -- is a pretty bad idea. In grade school I've taught 1st grade up to 8th, so this is my personal AND professional opinion.
  8. I barely heard a hum but I did have a negative sensation (headache? pressure? something.) My dd put her hands over her ears and wanted me to stop it. Ds with Asperger's said, "It sounds like HATE." Interesting.
  9. I've made several afghans in this ripple stitch: http://www.knitting-n-crochet.com/Crochet-ripple-afghan.html If I used a double crochet stitch instead, it would make the stitch higher, right? And the afghan work would be a little faster? Would a double crochet use less yarn than a single for the same size afghan? Would it change the width at all? I always have trouble figuring out how many chain stitches to do to start my project. I'm crocheting an afghan for my TALL son and I'm trying to figure out how to begin. And how much yarn to buy, of course. Thank you !
  10. I'm not sure where you live, but I'd go for sunscreen here. I visited a neighbor's back patio yesterday afternoon around 3:30 and it was HOT. I stayed in the shade, too. So much depends upon the time of year (our summer is arriving!), but I'd err on the side of caution -- especially since you're talking about longer than 10-15 minutes. I do tend to be sensitive about this issue because of my skin type (and my children's), so ymmv. When we swim or go to the beach in summer, I shoot for 5 or later.
  11. That is AWESOME!:hurray: What a great and inspirational story to read this morning!
  12. Interesting. Not sure how this came about, but there are some cute shows/movies on Netflix in Korean and dd has fallen in love with the language/culture. Now she's downloading Korean songs onto her mp3 and trying to find a way to study Korean. We don't know anyone from Korea. Korean isn't offered AT ALL at any of the local schools/colleges, much less as a major. Being in an area with a substantial Hispanic population, we've encouraged our dc to learn some Spanish and have the Rosetta Stone program. Dd has been haphazard in her study but does seem to have a gift for language. Maybe she'd do well with Korean . . . I believe in finding and following your passion, but I'm having trouble with this one. First, she only has a year left before college. Second, purchasing another language curriculum or paying a tutor is not in our budget (these college prep requirements are expensive!) And third, we hadn't even considered any colleges that offer Korean. She really-really-really needs to focus on her math requirements (an area of struggle) to get INTO college. Part of me thinks we should say, "Sure, Sweetie. On your own time and your own dime AFTER you finish these requirements." Another thinks that sometimes these inexplicable passions are what guide us to our purpose in life and we should figure out a way to help her pursue this no matter how it seems to us. This comes from a woman who was PASSIONATE about French at her age. Took 3 years and loved it, but it's all gone now . . . I can see the value of language study, but she wouldn't even be able to get credit for this. I've talked to her about the most "useful" foreign languages, doing searches for how the study is helpful in different careers and among different population centers. Korean is way down the list. Should that matter? I'm pretty sure I'll reread this later and think I'm unreasonable. It is, after all, her life. Right? Understand I'm really just venting about how difficult it is to understand these young people in my house.:tongue_smilie:
  13. Thanks, everyone. I set up an account and went through the order to check shipping (just shy of "submit") and then did the Canadian/US dollars conversion. Even with the "to US" shipping, they're much cheaper new than the used sites this side of the border. I'm guessing it's because the publisher is Canadian? The US booksellers must not keep the books in stock. Or maybe have some additional fees or something that raise the price? I've heard of "Chapters" but never had one in our region. Nice to know!
  14. In this situation, I feel like I'm trusting other people -- trusting that they, too, have turned on their lights and are driving the appropriate speed for the conditions . . . Hazard lights couldn't hurt . . . :001_smile:
  15. I have a regular driving route that is plagued several times per year by fog. I leave plenty of time, slow down, have my lights on, etc, and I feel fine most of the way. However, there is one intersection where the 2-lane road I am traveling ends and I must turn left onto a 55 mph highway. There's never much traffic and I can see the immediate intersection clearly . . . I just can't see very far in either direction (fog + a curve). I've actually considered turning right instead and turning around later at an intersection with better visibility or lower speed or a traffic signal. This probably sounds nutty, but I'm not relaxed when I'm driving and I want to know if there is a strategy for this particular situation -- besides staying home! I'd appreciate your thoughts.
  16. Thank you, Cleo. It looked like a great site! Glad to know there's a bookstore up north where I can shop happily! :D
  17. I've been searching for books by a Canadian author that apparently are oop ... at least in the US. The used prices at Amazon and ebay are . By doing some online searches, I've found a couple of the books -- new! -- at indigo.ca with reasonable shipping. Unfortunately I don't know (and don't trust) ordering without finding some positive customer reviews of this retailer. Anyone here? tia
  18. In my experience, the gym will also be filled with University employees who come in every shape and size. And age. (And lots of young bodies these days are in desperate need of a gym, too.) I can understand your anxiety. Take a deep breath. Coach yourself through it. After a time or two, you'll hit your groove and feel right at home. Remember: you're only competing against yourself! Good luck! And enjoy it!
  19. :grouphug: Saying a prayer for your friend. She will need your love and encouragement in the coming months. :grouphug:
  20. I've promised myself and my dh that I'll go in next week if it doesn't self-correct. In fact, maybe I'll call today to make the appt and just cancel if I don't need it.
