  1. Dh uses this with his Kindle Fire. Is the jack the same for the Kindle? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007OYAVLI/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i06 The lithium ion battery charges through a USB cord for up to 10 hours use. The volume is controlled through the device. (Sometimes the kiddos use it for MP3 players.) My dad liked it so much, he ordered one, too. hth
  2. I appreciate all the responses and have been sharing the consensus with dh. He said, "I wonder what the dr would say if we just skipped this part of the treatment." Would any of you consider doing that? I really haven't explored the wisdom tooth issue because it hasn't been a concern. Yet. Have any of you decided the extraction just wasn't worth the trouble to your child? I have no idea about cost. I don't think our insurance covers extractions. Maybe a small percentage. It doesn't cover orthodontics at all. I don't know about oral surgeons or sedation. I don't want to make medical decisions based on cost, but I do need to prepare. I know we've been charged extra for nitrous oxide for another dc's work. The appt is this week and I think I am panicking. If we're going another route, I need to call Monday . . .
  3. Hmmm. My cousins (yes, plural -- two different cousins w/their respective wives) did something similar. The third son (or was it fourth?) was named the same name as a previous son's middle name. It may have been a combination of the first two sons' middle names . . . I don't think it's an issue since the given names are all distinctive. We have several families with lots of boys. :D
  4. The first time I ever noticed the connection was when I worked as a camp counselor. Being in open air tents and cabins, our every activity was influenced by the weather. My headache came just before the storms. :tongue_smilie: My later life activities moved me back inside, but I still feel the weather effects. Most recently surrounding TS Isaac's landfall. :glare: Is there anything you do for relief?
  5. I think if we went the oral surgeon route, they would take care of all four . . .+ maybe that pesky lone wisdom tooth . . . at once. The 2 and 2 is assuming we'll just have nitrous and local at the dentist's office.
  6. I think it will be the first bicuspids. The initial plan is to do the top ones this week and the bottom ones later . . . And I don't think he'll need stitches. We haven't talked about the impacted wisdom tooth yet. Fortunately, he only has one.
  7. This frightens me even more. :001_huh: Ds won't eat yogurt or applesauce or mashed potatoes . . . . He's Mr. Crunchy and eats tortilla chips with salsa every day . . . I'll be praying for your ds. And for you. :grouphug::grouphug:
  8. My man-sized ds with Asperger's Syndrome has been especially blessed with strong teeth. He has never had a cavity, so his dental visits have been pretty easy. He is going undergoing orthodontic work right now and . . . so far, so good. However. He's going to need to have 4 teeth extracted. This is a ds who has strong tactile defensiveness against many food textures. The orthodontist, after our consultation, decided to stick with just x-rays instead of try to do impressions. I remember the experience of tooth extractions. 2 of our other dc have had these, too. I'm nervous that ds will panic and not cooperate. Several years ago (when he was much smaller) it took four techs to hold him down to take a few vials of blood . . . . I've talked to the dentist about my fears and he says we could opt to have this done with mild sedation and an oral surgeon. Ack. I don't really want that. Maybe ds will cooperate with the dentist after all. HOWEVER. What if the dentist takes care of these 2 teeth next week but ds cannot face another session with 2 more??? A part of me thinks we could go without the extractions. Yes, his teeth will still be quite prominent, but they aren't sticking out at all angles like before ... Another part thinks we should suck it up and do everything just as we would for our other dc. He is high functioning intellectually, but his fears? Aye-yi-yi. If he panics he reacts like a preschooler . . . Any advice? Experience?
  9. :iagree: I would keep looking for a name for this new blessing. My dh goes by his middle name and we had ANOTHER issue come up when trying to buy a cell phone yesterday. It complicates bills and statements and school records. And prescriptions and dr records. Most of our bills are in dh's name and when I call to question or change or pay anything, I have trouble remembering which name is on the account. Unless I were having twins or planning several more, I wouldn't.
  10. This conversation has been interesting to me! My assumption was that I would send a thank you note. I have done that for every professional job interview I've had. My question was only about the appropriateness of my stationery, since I don't have any undecorated note cards on hand. (Simplyme99, I remember purchasing Crane ecru cards during college. I should buy more!) I was taught that it was the right thing to do, and that, even if it isn't typical, employers would notice your good manners at least. I've done some google searches on getting jobs, and the thank you letter is mentioned on almost every one, usually in the section about acing the interview. I appreciate your different perspectives. I sent the note yesterday. Wish me luck! :)
  11. Actually, it was part of my professional training 25 years ago. My impression was that it was a longstanding practice. My major was professional writing, so YMMV.
  12. I have some white note cards with my first and last names in a cursive black font on the front. Would you use these for a professional thank you note? Or should I pick up some plain note cards for this? I'm saving my smiley and kitty note cards for other occasions. :D
  13. We are exploring veganism due to some family and personal health issues. Dd and I checked books out from the library, read reviews on Amazon, and found the favorite recipes mentioned on the reviews. Dd made a list of ingredients (a long list!) to try a few recipes. We just got back from the store, and I feel stupid. We did find a few things. We asked for help finding a few things. But after wandering around and reading labels and picking up Indian and Asian packages, we left without finding most of them. Sigh. Kelp. Where do you find kelp at the store?? Is it in a can? Is it frozen? That's just one thing. I think I'll google everything on the list and look at the "images." I'm going to have a hard time trying these recipes when I can't even find the ingredients. I don't know if they're obscure or not ... it's just that I have never shopped for them. Any tips? I need a crash course!
  14. A couple of my dc and my dh don't like to eat breakfast. For the off-to-school-and-work individuals, I feel the need to get something into their stomachs because I know how long it will be before they get lunch. They get up at 5:30-6:00 and may not have lunch until 12:30! If someone complains that his stomach hurts after eating breakfast, do you have a recommendation? This morning ds settled on hot tea with a little sugar and milk and a little bowl of oatmeal with raisins. He didn't finish either. His stomach doesn't seem to bother him at other times of the day and he's growing taller almost visibly. WWYD?
  15. I've experienced it both ways. With the first couple of dc, the pregnancy was easier. Maybe because I was a new mom and hovered so much after they got here?? :D The last two in particular -- well, my body was shot. I seemed to have Braxton-Hicks constantly and the pressure was nearly unbearable. I felt instantaneously lighter and more energetic with the delivery. Yes, they nursed around the clock, but I actually slept better than I had in my couldn't-get-comfortable-in-any-position pregnant body. So . . . both??? :D
  16. hear their response before withdrawing your offer? I know some board members visit here often, but others are infrequent. What is the appropriate "wait time" for purchase offers?
  17. :iagree: For my college students, it really is up to them. If they can (on their own!) make the grades despite absences, I don't blame them. However, we do in class activities that cannot be made up. So, if you have a 99 avg and miss a 10 point activity, it really won't matter. When I taught first grade, I would have to read tests to the students. Math word problems, science questions, listening comprehension, etc. Helping students make up work for illness, etc took up a lot of my time! In class learning time! We were required to have 10 test grades (or equivalent) per quarter for each subject: English, reading, social studies, spelling . . . Sure, some students could have passed (even aced) those tests while missing for a vacation, but that took extra time from helping students who needed more attention. Many of them could not. One year chicken pox went through our school. Often I had 7+ students out. It was more than a month before I had another perfect attendance day. When you're trying to get 33 (or 25 or 18) students ready for end of quarter tests, days absent DO make a big deal.
  18. I only took a day at a time (we were allowed two personal days). Once was to work on my grad school research and the other was to accompany my preschool (public school -- same school where I worked) dd on a field trip. On that trip a chaperone was required for each student. When dd had a another trip, her aunt went with her. Dh never takes personal days. He used to teach high school students with emotional disorders and had paraprofessionals assigned in his classes. Even so, when he would return from system-mandated workshops/meetings, he would find that some of his students would have been suspended or expelled during his absence. He hated having to be away from his job because it was bad for his students. I think teachers here would be fired for using sick days for vacations. I do know of a teacher who missed work because of a relative's death, and her pay was docked those days as it was not "immediate" family. :001_huh: I'm not saying I agree with these policies, but I abide(d) by them. I think I'm modeling for my dc and my (former) students the value of education and professionalism.
  19. But see, I'm an adult and my vacations have had to be planned around my work. I used to teach dayschool. Now I teach college. I was allowed 2 personal days during the school year . . . not enough time for a big vacation. And I am under contract to teach certain days during the college term. I don't plan vacations during this time of my responsibility. Dh is a ps counselor, so this is the way it works for us. I'm not anti-vacation. This is just my personal experience as a professional. It's my priority. I haven't taken my dc out of school (now our dc are split into the homeschooled and the ps'ed groups) for vacations. We plan our time together when dh and the ps dc aren't in session. I'm sure there are many professions for which vacation schedules are non-negotiable. That said, we haven't had any big-once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, either. We're basically homebodies. That factors in, too, I'm sure.
  20. Thanks for the enabling. Here I am, weak and awaiting the coffee, and you link me to something like this. :D (It's on the way.)
  21. According to the information I'm reading at the Paypal site, it looks like the fees are on the same scale no matter what kind of account the purchaser is using. Am I missing something?
  22. Does your Sophia have a nickname? I like Catherine. Maybe Catherine Elise? I think I'd call her "Catherine."
