  1. We have all these boutique fitness places that have been popping up around us. They tend to specialize in a specific activity: surfing, barre, rowing, spin, boxing, etc. I would probably try a class at each until I found one I enjoyed. They usually offer a first class or first week free.
  2. I think it depends on the ages and personalities of your kids. If they typically deal well with new situations well, you can tell them whenever. My oldest is 8, he can't have too much time to think about new things or he will worry too much, but if we spring it on him at the last minute, he get frustrated too. If it were him, I would tell him 4-5 days in advance. That would give me enough time to prepare him but not too much time to fret. I would give him a few details: "dad needs to have surgery, he is going to be ok, but he needs all my attention, so you are going to stay with grandma for a couple days. What kinds of things do you hope to do while you are there?" Then a day or two ahead of time I might suggest a special toy or treat to take along. I would let my kids ask questions and answer at their level. Good luck!
  3. I keep mine out. It's never gone bad, my kids love butter though so a stick doesn't last long around here.
  4. My husband did a pre check last week. It took about 5 minutes. They had him review the info he submitted online and then scanned his fingers for prints. If they don't do the appointments at your local airport, can't you just do the appointment at whatever airport you are flying to? It does take a week or two to receive your ID(approval number)so it isn't like you can use it immediately anyway. I flew through Cincinnatti and Houston a couple weeks ago with 3 kids, the longest I waited in line was 15 minutes. It has been a couple years since I had last flown and I was impressed by how quick the security process is now compared to a couple years ago. Houston used to be awful! Which airports still have long security lines?
  5. I'm guessing the version written by Laura Hilldebrand. It is a fantastic book and after you have read it, there is a not quite as good as the book movie that came out in the last year or two.
  6. My 3 year old frequently tells me, "I didn't get a wink of sweep wast night!" (Sleep last night). Never mind the fact that he slept 12 hours.
  7. My 8 year old has kind of outgrown the cute expressions but the way he pronounces onion and restaurant crack me up. I can only conclude he says them a certain way because it's how he reads them, but I'm not certain. When my 6 year old is hugged tight or cuddles with us in the chair when there isn't much room she says, "it's squeezy."
  8. Try a big and tall store. Casual XL has a better selection online, but does sell tall t-shirts. Old Navy and Gap sell talls online as well. Dillard's is where I buy my husband's under shirts and dress shirts but they may have quirky t-shirts too. I have not been impressed with Duluth Trading's return process buying online, but if you have a local store it may be better. We had quality control issues with pants and ended up replacing them 3 times in 3 months, shipping at our own expense each time. My husband has since sworn off buying from them.
  9. The shelter we adopted from had a foster to adopt program where you can take the dog home for a week and if it isn't a good fit, return the dog to the shelter for a full refund. You may want to see if your shelter does something similar.
  10. We adopted a 7 year old beagle mix last week. He is the sweetest dog ever and seems to love other dogs. The dogs we have had in the past generally preferred having another dog around. We plan to get another dog eventually but want our new guy well settled first.
  11. My kids are much younger so my answer isn't relevant, but what about having each boy take a night to plan and prepare supper? They are at great ages to learn to cook if they don't know already. They could even do the shopping. My husband is a great cook and I'm so appreciative his parents taught him to cook. When I worked full time too whoever got home first made supper.
  12. Sausage is probably fattier than ground pork (I'm not certain, just going to how it looks). The spices may be different too. You may need to add a little oil to brown the ground pork if it is too lean or the gravy may not thicken right. My MIL does not serve anything with biscuits and gravy. When we have it for dinner (I'm too northern to have it for breakfast) I usually serve it with scrambled eggs and fresh fruit just because I think you need to have a fruit or vegetable at meals. I don't butter my biscuits first since there is already quite a bit of butter in my biscuits. I've never seen my husband butter his first. My MiL might, but she loves butter way more than the average person. My husband always crumbles his biscuits and mixes the gravy into it. I prefer to leave my biscuits whole and spoon some gravy over. Then I cut each bite with my fork. I hope you enjoy it!
  13. You don't want biscuits and gravy made by a northerner unless said northerner had been taught by a southern how to make biscuits and gravy. (My MIL taught me because I had never heard of biscuits and gravy before moving south. It took several years but I finally enjoy it and am pretty decent at making sausage gravy but my husband is much better at it.)
  14. Is first class an option? My husband is 6'5" and flying is miserable for him. He chooses an exit row aisle seat when possible, it does cost more. A few times he has been upgraded to first class and says it's a lot better. I think I would figure out all the airline options between MD and CA and then figure out who has the most legroom. If it's Jet Blue, get the airline card with Jet Blue. If he's facing a 6ish hour flight paying more for the ticket would probably be worth it. Good luck!
  15. I read the article to my husband, he was shocked the 9 year old was still racing. It ran in the 2009 Derby so it must have been a good horse at one time.
  16. No this is not normal. I live in horse racing country and can't remember ever hearing of a horse collapsing with heart problems. You do occasionally hear of a horse breaking its leg and having to be put down. Horse owners don't want to put their horses down though.
  17. My MIL texted me about it last night, but she rarely watches the news so I thought it was the same one from a couple weeks ago (we didn't have anything then.). It sounds like it's bigger now, I'm going to check my again freezer just in case.
  18. Do you know anyone who drives a semi? My FIL used to own a flat bed and hauled a couple small pieces of furniture for me. I had to be patient but I wasn't in a hurry
  19. Is this recall different from the one issued a couple weeks ago?
  20. Is that an individual or family rate? Do they have other employees that work in the field? Another thing that can jack up rates at smaller companies is someone with cancer or is newly diagnosed with a chronic illness. My husband worked in a company with 50ish employees. Two people got cancer in one year, rates doubled the following year.
