  1. I would call the administrative offices. I got one a couple years ago with no problem.
  2. This is how I make mine. It isn't my favorite food but it is good, my husband would eat it weekly if I fixed it that often.
  3. I have a GMC Acadia that I really like. The middle row has captain chairs which can be moved forward to allow for more legroom in the back. The backrow is comfortable for me (5'2") but would not be for my husband (6'5"). The back seat is a split bench that can be folded down flat for more cargo room. I know a couple people who drive a Honda Pilot and like them pretty well.
  4. My kids are still young, but I did not have a close relationship with my parents. I am already seeing how much more confidence my kids have because they know I have their best interests at heart. I really enjoy being at home with them. We sort of fell into homeschooling but it was a blessing for my family.
  5. I'm not anti-fireworks either. I do think people should be courteous about not shooting them off after a certain time. Also, if you make a big mess in the street you should clean it up.
  6. I think part of the problem with enforcement is that so many people are shooting off fireworks it's difficult for the police to handle that and more serious things, they have to prioritize. I would imagine in places with burn bans in place the police are more vigilant because more lives are at risk. I also suspect that unless the police are getting multiple calls about a specific location, it would be a little like going on a wild goose chase to cite everyone shooting fireworks. At least in my area there isn't one person who is shooting fireworks for 4 hours every night. It's 30 people shooting them off for 20-30 minutes each with some overlap. I don't really understand where all the illegal fireworks are coming from in my area. You can have sparklers, smoke bombs, poppers, and a few other things, you can buy them at the grocery store or from one of several firework stands. I don't get where the big Roman candles and bottle rockets are coming from if they aren't legal in our county or the surrounding counties.
  7. I know you asked for books but Discovery Channel has a show called "How Stuff Works" that could be quite informative. There is also a YouTube channel by a man who is a rocket scientist called Smarter Everyday. My son enjoys Mechanical Engineering magazine, I'm not sure if you can find it at a library or not. We have come home with lots of library books that explain how things work but I can't think of any titles off the top of my head.
  8. . I hope to remember this in a few years.
  9. My grandma is one of the culprits, but not the only one. It was on our school lunch menu growing up too.
  10. OP- try some white noise to help cover the noise. Put a noisy fan outside her room, play music, run a vacuum. I'm fortunate that my kids sleep right through them, but I understand where you are coming from.
  11. Anything aerial is banned in my county. Our neighbors had a pretty spectacular show two nights in a row. A police officer lives three doors down. They weren't the only neighbors with fireworks. So no, it isn't enforced.
  12. I think it really depends on the kids. My oldest child would have been ready to start school 3.5. My youngest just turned 4 and he probably won't be ready for table work for at least another year but it wouldn't surprise me if it were longer. One thing to consider is whether the kids are really competitive with each other. It might bother the older child if the younger one worked at the same level in everything. Again, I think that depends on family culture and personalities of the kids in the family. My friend has girls who are 13 months apart (plus two more close in age). She didn't start homeschooling until they were in 3rd, 2nd, and 1st grades. The two older girls are in the same level of math and it works well for them.
  13. I'm one of the people who mentioned sloppy joes being referred to as BBQ. No one that I know of uses BBQ sauce in it, they are typical sloppy joes. I grew up in SD, I don't ever remember being served actual BBQ unless I visited my TX relatives. I was aware of Kansas City style BBQ being different from TX style BBQ.
  14. Yes, you can put Audible books on multiple devices using the same account. You will want to make sure the devices do not sync or one child will lose his place.
  15. No advice but I laughed really hard at this. Kinsa has had a bunch of boys, she may have some tips.
  16. My daughter has used Reading Eggs. Do a free trial and don't pay full price. I think it is an ok program if you are starting with a beginner. It moves too slowly once a child is reading ok though. Teach Your Monster to Read is free and works similarly.
  17. I think the original book is geared more toward adults and the children's companion which came out later has more of a "lesson plan".
  18. One thought I just had is to try to quit schoolwork and start paying attention to him again when he's behaving well. That way good behavior is being rewarded and he doesn't have as much incentive to act up. Toddlers are crazy!
  19. Where I grew up it would mean sloppy joes (beef) possibly chicken wth BBQ sauce. Where I live now it would mean pulled pork. The BBQ truck where my grandma buys BBQ in TX has pork, beef brisket, and chicken although it does usually mean pork if you just say BBQ.
  20. If you are driving mostly in a city you wouldn't need to worry about down shifting at all. I learned when we were visiting TN, driving up to a cabin in the Smokey Mountains. My husband was surprised I had never learned about down shifting. I grew up in eastern South Dakota, it's super flat so I never had to worry about hills and definitely not mountains or curvy roads.
  21. It's referring to semis which make a specific, annoying noise. You will often see those signs near interstate exits.
  22. I agree with regentrude. If you are going down a steep incline, down-shifting will help keep you from going too fast. It saves the brakes and you feel more in control.
  23. One thing that helped for me was reading to or playing a game with my 3 year old before we started any school, then getting out the special toys. Taking a break specifically to check in with the three year old helped me too. I had the older kids play with him. There were some days we had to just scrap school but I tried to make that a last resort. My son just turned four, by the end of this last school year it was rare he was disruptive duing school.
